Ballad of Birmingham
In the poem Ballad of Birmingham, by Dudley Randall, written in 1969, Mr.
Randall uses of irony to describes the events of the mothers decision, and also
her concern for the welfare of her darling little child. It seems odd that this
child would even know what a freedom march is, but this would be considered
normal back in the early 1960's, when Mr. Martin Luther King Jr. had rallies and
freedom marches to free the African American people from discrimination and
segregation (Hunter 6). It also seems very ironic that the young child is acting
like an adult in this particular situation (Hunter 12). I think the mother would
be the one who would want to got to the march to free her people, not the child.
In the poem "Ballad of Birmingham", by Dudley Randall, written in 1969, Mr.
Randall uses tone and irony to describe the events of the mothers decisions, and
as well as her concern for her child's well being.
In the first stanza irony is used in order to make
reading the poem more interesting. The situation in this first stanza is also
very important. The little child is in a desperate situation and wants to help
better the lives of the African Americans. Randall also focuses on specific
culture here. The speaker is allowing the reader to make a mental picture of one
specific march in Birmingham (Hunter 17). But, you know as well as I, that with
peace marches and rallies comes violence and hostility. This is exactly what the
little girls mother is afraid of, this is why she will not let her go to the
march. It also seems weird that her mother is so sure that going to church,
instead of going to the march, will be the best thing for her. (Hunter 19-20).
Typically, a church is to be a very safe and sacred place where no-one would
imagine a bombing or any other type of violence to happen. What is ironic about
this is that going to church turns out to be the worst place for her to be
(Hunter 21). Something else that strikes me funny is that her mother dresses her
in her daughter in her best clothes to go to church with her. What is ironic
here is that she ended up wearing them to her funeral instead (Hunter 26). There

In Joyce Carol Oates, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” the first time the author uses biblical allusions is when Connie and her friend are going to the popular drive in diner. “They went up through the maze of parked and cruising cars to the bright-lit, fly-infested restaurant, their faces pleased and expectant as if they were entering a sacred building that loomed up out of the night to give them what haven and blessing they yearned for”(Oates). The authors compares this local teenage hangout to a church. In the short story the author talks about how none of Connie’s family bothered with church. Connie does not have a church in her life that she can go to, so she uses the diner to fill that void. For Connie this drive-in diner is like her church. At a church it has a group of people that come together weekly. Connie and her friends visit the drive-in diner frequently. Another comparison that can be made between a church and the local diner is the music. “They sat at the counter and crossed their legs at the
One kids told their parent, that they wanted to march and stop segregation before their parents die and so they can be free. There were boys and girls of all ages, who were marching in the Birmingham march and fought hard to put an end to segregation for them and their parents.
On top of the different fundraisers going on in 1963, there was also an event called the March on Birmingham in Alabama. Since public facilities were not being desegregated like the hope that they had in Georgia, they needed to make a change and show what they wanted. The campaign that was planned in Birmingham to make a change had planned demonstrations, boycotts, sit-ins, marches on the city hall, and even sending high school students to jail. Martin Luther King, and many other activists wanted to be able to desegregate the lunch areas in downtown, they wanted blacks to be able to have fair jobs, allow both whites and blacks to attend the parks, desegregate public schools, and avoid charges against people who were demonstrators during this time. While gathering people in the black community to participate in the fundraisers and campaign in Birmingham, the musicians helped by providing songs within meetings, which helped to inform others about the events, encourage the people to be strong and fight for what they wanted, gain support and rally people for the boycotts, and they even sang and played to celebrate with the people.

Stephanie has been dealing with many problems and they have been somewhat of a hindrance to her making it to church. She's suddenly been in so much physical pain. She said her back nerve is split so pain occurs all over especially in her legs. She cannot walk well nor sit. The prayer team prayed for her pain and Hyunhee suggested that she come to church as much as she can so they can pray for healing and she can take part in bible study. She felt much better after prayers and promised to come to church more.

Church is not a boring place to come sit on a pew. The church is not the building. The church is a group of saved, baptized believers, who have covenanted together to carry out the Great Commission. “Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end, Amen.” (Ephesians 3:21)
Church is a living spiritual organism that is also susceptible to spiritual germs that can hinder, impede and destroy the body. Just like germs that are carried and transferred by people, it is the people that can also carry devastating germs into the church body.

As she chewed her eggs, she thought about the worship night last night. Linda had never taken her to church, but Amanda had gone a few times with Jenny and her family. Something in her loved being there, and she wished her mother would go with her one day. Unfortunately, Linda James was a very stubborn woman. Amanda sighed and took her plate to the sink and washed it. Oh well, maybe one day she’ll go to church, there’s always a chance…
We all know that if someone wants to go somewhere, they will go. Especially if they find it valuable and important, like these two women find church.
