In order to consolidate this module, I observed 5 girls in a private ballet studio, during a pre-primary ballet class, and 6 girls playing together in a sandpit during their free play period at a private Jewish Day nursery school. The girls in the ballet class were between the ages of five and six years old, and the girls at school were between the ages of four and five years old.
During the ballet class, the ballet teacher was present. She needed to control the class, manage the behaviour, and make sure that the children all did as they were told. The teacher was there to do most of the exercises with them, as they are still young and are not able to remember the entire syllabus by themselves. The children in both of the observations come from similar backgrounds, and are very privileged. They are similar ages; however, since the observations were done in different environments and settings, the observations were very different. In both instances, the teachers understood the importance of imaginative role-playing. During the ballet class, the girls were given the opportunity to create their own little dance as “Cinderella”, and imagine themselves dancing with the prince. This is a fairytale which they are all familiar with. The girls in the sandpit were using their imaginations to bake a cake, and were role-playing. During their game, they were not five year olds, but were rather adults who had very important tings to do.

While observing the girls in the ballet class, it was clear to me that they are at the preoperational developmental stage. Their vocabulary is at a reasonably high level, they are willing to share with the other girls, and are learning to respect the rights of other people, which shows that they are becoming less egocentric. They know that the studio, and everything inside the studio does not belong to them, and that they need to look after any feathers or musical instruments that the teacher allows them to borrow during their lesson.
