Tricheurs is a movie directed by Barbet Schroder. This follows the same style as the works Schroder directed before this point. He is not a director that puts out a large amount of movies. He had put out seven as a director between 1969 and 1986. His first movie was called “More” and came out in 1969. It was a melodrama that was quite romantic. The look of the film was stunning. It was set in Majorca and was about heroin addiction. He took a look at a tough topic and made it understandable. He made it human. In ''Maitresse'' in 1975 he made a romantic comedy. Not the average romantic comedy but one that revolves around sado-masochism. He brought a dark humor to the subject and yet brought seriousness to the subject that most filmmakers don’t even try to convey. Tricheurs definitely belongs in this line up. …show more content…
This time Schroder took a look at gambling addiction. One of the characters in the film says it is “an addiction that society ignores with a clean conscience.” Looking at society today this statement can still be taken as true. Now though society has even more legal ways to allow those with this addiction to indulge than there were in the 1980s. There was no problem for the main male character, Elric, who lives on Madeira. He is a gambler addicted to the game and often loses more than he can afford to. He loses to the point that he cannot even afford a bag of groceries at times. He is a handsome and intelligent man who knows that he has a problem. When he is losing he sees a woman. He sees her at 7:07pm. She was wearing a t-shirt with the number 7. He knows that she will be the thing to turn his luck around. The signs were all there. So he charms her and pays this woman to stand by his side for seven days so that his luck will improve. Her name is

In order to better understand addiction as a disease as opposed to a moral dilemma it first must be broken down. First you must look at the way in which the chemicals affect the brain. The first attempt at partaking in any mind altering substance can be looked at as a choice to the individual. However what happens after that first

Both readings presented the theme of drugs and drug addiction. The theme drugs, goes over the ethics and types of substances used for its physiological effects, for instance, heroine was the main narcotic that the anthropologists studied/focused on. Drug addiction analyzes the problems drugs has towards an individual’s health, social structure, living standards, and socialization, which was mostly observed in the Pearson & Bourgois article when they discussed the manner the addicts lived. What I found most interesting in the Bourgois article is when the author states, “Anthropologists cannot escape seeing, feeling, and empathizing with the people they study”. I thought it was interesting because it shows the reality of this profession as well
