In the late 1940’s a man named Joseph Campbell shared his Mythic principal with the world. He explains that there is a three-stage formula that he calls a Hero Journey which is the structure of every story. Though most stories are completely different on the outside, the stories are almost structured around these three stages. Stage 1 is the hero leaves the everyday world and enters another world. While Stage 2 the hero is challenged by opposing forces and must pass a series a test throughout the movie. That will then determine who will be victorious, either the hero or the opposing forces. Stage 3 is tied into Stage 2 because if the hero is victorious, they will return to the ordinary world with a gift for the world.

The hero cycle follows a character's stages of renewal and repeats every time a challenge materializes. The phases of the hero cycle enhance the morals of Edmond Dantès, Odysseus and Thor. They all kickoff their story in good hands, only to be shoved into an unexpected adventure. They travel and gain friends whose purpose is to steer them toward their goals. They all have major setbacks that they have to learn to shift and control to resume their thrones and authorities.

Hero stories like The Odyssey have been around for millions of years. Joseph Campbell says, “all heroes go through basic stages.” Campbell looks at these varieties of heroes as one hero “with a thousand faces.” The heroes will go through the three stages, the departure, initiation, and the return. In The Odyssey, Odysseys starts from his departure leaving Troy to go back home, he then goes through the initiation where Odysseys’ true character emerges, and then returning home as his new self.

We learned a lot about the hero cycle recently. We know that heroes have a significant birth or lineage, a call to adventure, helpers, elixir—an item or weapon that possesses special powers that tend to help the hero, crossing of the threshold (normal world into that of the hero), and many departures normally followed by triumphant returns in which our hero is stronger and wiser.

We all have a hero or heroes that defined our childhoods. Sometimes people don’t admit it, but a person like me, I got no problem telling you all the heroes I grew up with. I remember watching the 1992 animated series of Batman and I enjoyed it so much that my parent bought some Batman action figures which include his sidekick Robin, his iconic arch nemesis the Joker, etc. Although Batman is a hero I grew up, Robin is one of my personal heroes. This apply to any Robins like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, etc. Each of these people who took up the persona had an interesting role. Jason Todd (The second Robin), was killed by the Joker, but in a shocking way for which was a response to the fans petition for Todd to be killed off in the comics,

When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.
