Germany in the 1930s and 1940s: Adolf Hitler and the Nazis attempt to eliminate the Jewish race because they feel they are a bane to society and the Aryan race. This is just one example of how race can make one group think less of another. This is not the only factor though. Nobility has always looked down upon those without royal blood, and rich people have always looked down upon poor people. These factors are all present in Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison. In order to highlight the virulent relationship between the white men and black men in Battle Royal, Ralph Ellison focuses on a separation of class by way of race, wealth, and social standing. The racism within this story is easily spotted, and it effects how the white and black men interact with each other. The class Ellison and the other blacks are in is different from the white mens’ ,in part, because of race and race relationships in that time period. If Ellison and his fellow African Americans were not African American, then the story would be very different. However, race is only one aspect that separates classes within Battle Royal. The second way in which Ellison is separated from the white men around him is wealth. The white men at the battle royal are all fairly wealthy, and they display this several times. The first of these is at the end of the fight when one of them bets on Ellison’s opponent “I got my money on the big boy.” (pg 231) If this person did not have a lot of money, he would not be betting on this fight, and since all the white men there are similar in that they are important townspeople, they all would have money. Ellison and his fellow black men however, are not wealthy. This is evident, firstly because they are fighting for money in the at all, and secondly because of the money rug.
