From 1914-1918 was the First World War. There was two main sides to the war. Those sides being the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) and the Triple Entente (France, Russia and Britain). Although the fighting and destruction took place all over the world, majority of the battles happened in Europe. Belgium, France and Turkey being the main countries. These battlefields had different living conditions and many advances in technologies.

The Germans hoped that the French would commit their strategic reserve to recapture the position and suffer catastrophic losses in a battle of annihilation, not costly for the Germans because of their tactical advantage.
