he first world war is known by many names; The great war, the war to end all wars or even as simple as World war one. The war originated in Europe and was fought by the Allies and the Central powers. In Document A the Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria Hungary and Italy while the Triple Entente powers were Russia,Great Britain and France .WWI was fought at the Eastern, Western and Italian fronts, but the biggest was the Western Front. The Western Front involved the area of Europe to the west of Germany, including France, Belgium and England. This is where trench warfare became very popular, which is what this war is so infamous for.

World War I took place in Europe in the early 19th century and was fought by Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Great Britain, and Australia-Hungary. These countries reasons for a war were nationalism, alliances, and militarism. Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Great Britain, and Austria-Hungary were all wanting the same thing, but they were too busy competing with each other to see clearly.

The World War One started in 1914 and ended in 1918 and occurred in Europe. The main areas it occurred in was Belgium and the Western Front. People involved were the German, Australians, New Zealanders and British people. World War 1 was mostly fought on the Western Front. Western Front started being used on the 17 August 1914 to the 3rd ofMarch 1918. Germany originally started the Western Front to gain ground against the enemies. German Empire, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire all fought together against the Russian Empire, Russian Republic, Romania, Belgium, British Empire. They also fought again Soviet Russia.

The Battle of Verdun (Bataille de Verdun, IPA: [bataj də vɛʁdœ̃], Schlacht um Verdun, IPA: [ʃlaxt ˀʊm ˈvɛɐdœŋ]), fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916, was the largest and longest battle of the First World War on the Western Front between the German and French armies. The battle took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. The German 5th Army attacked the defences of the Fortified Region of Verdun (RFV, Région Fortifiée de Verdun) and those of the French Second Army on the right bank of the Meuse. Inspired by the experience of the Second Battle of Champagne in 1915, the Germans planned rapidly to capture the Meuse Heights, an excellent defensive position with good observation for the artillery to bombard Verdun. The Germans hoped that the French would commit their strategic reserve to recapture the position and suffer catastrophic losses in a battle of annihilation, not costly for the Germans because of their tactical advantage.

1916 was characterized as the year of attritional battles, where Germany hoped to force French and British to capitulate in order to focus on the Russians. Germany hoped to sap the strength of the allies at the battles of the Verdun and the Somme. A european war in which an alliance including Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United states defeated the alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria. It was believed that the fighting would be over quickly but sadly the war lasted 4 years (from August 1st, 1914 to November 11th, 1918. It soon became clear that the fighting would continue for a long time and that it would result in massive casualties. Although the United States attempted to avoid involvement in the war. Finally by 1917 they joined the Allied Powers.

German Chief of General Staff, von Falkenhayn was said not to have set out for war over land but to kill. The fighting motivated heroism but also caused slaughter on a horrific level. There was almost one death per minute. The battle led to hundreds of thousand deaths of the British. For almost four months of the battle two shells were fired every second.

Another area that the war took place was the Western Front; this battlefield ranged from the Belgian coast which was the northern end, to the southern end which was the Swiss Frontier; this mainly was between Great Britain, America and others that lied in the East. To Germany, this battle front was known as "die Westfront", to France it was known as "Le Front Occidental", for the British force, it was "The Western Front". World War One was the first major war that was fought in mainly in Europe, and parts of Asia. The war lasted from July 28th, 1914 to November 11th, 1928. There were over a hundred nations involved not only from Europe, but from Asia, Africa, Central America, North America and many Island nations. There were millions of casualties fighting in slow moving trench warfare , and many battles were also fought at sea.

At the turn of the 18th century European colonialism was at its height as each nation had stretched its military forces all throughout the world from Africa and all throughout Asia.
