70% of ladies admitted that they would ignore or avoid a potential love interest because of the way they looked (Buchanan). The Beauty and the Beast starts with a lively music in the castle which immediately set us into action. A castle full of expensive housewares and beautiful ladies wearing white gowns dancing to the music represent perfection. The ball is interrupted by a knock from an unexpected beggar who offered the insensitive prince a rose for shelter. The loud thunderclap and the way the chandelier lights were blown off by the wind intensified the scene. When he refuses, the beggar transformed into an enchantress and changed him into a hideous beast and his servants into housewares. The camera angle which showed the shadow figure of the prince turning to a beast was amazingly done. She casts a spell on the rose and it would only be broken if he could learn to love another and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell. On the other hand, Belle starts the film in a small lively village which implies peacefulness and security. Belle is a simple, creative girl wanting to leave her monotonous village life to explore new things and go to an adventure. This came true when her horse Philippe went home anxiously without Maurice, her father. The way the horse neighed repeatedly implied that something is wrong. Belle, without hesitation, stormed off to the castle where her father was imprisoned and took his place as
The story of the Beauty and the Beast is well known amongst all ages. Though the story they portray in the Disney version is much different than what they have portrayed it in France. La Belle et la Bête has been produced twice, once in 1946 and again in 2014. These two movies tell the same story but in very different ways. The perception of this story has changed between the different time periods.
Linda Seger's hero myth from her publication "Creating the Myth" is very thorough in the steps involved in creating a hero of a story. All ten steps are very common to a typical hero story. However, there are some gaps in her theory. An example of a story that does not fit Seger's theory is the Disney version of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. This popular cultural phenomenon has within it an atypical hero, one who pokes holes in Seger's hero myth theory. This atypical hero, simply named Beast, does not fit all ten of the steps in a typical hero story.
For instance, Belle is the only character in the town to wear blue. Almost every other character wore red. This leads the viewer to believe that Belle is the only good person in a group of mean and often misogynistic people. Another aspect of the film is the use of seasons. The film goes through Fall, Winter, and ends in Spring. The depicted seasons put the viewer in different moods, and let them know what is going on. For example, Spring is often associated with rebirth, so it is with Beauty and the Beast. The Beast nearly dies until Belle tells him she loves him, and he is turned back into a prince as the curse is broken. This scene, paired with the change from Winter to Spring, shows that the Beast is a changed man, and no longer a “beast.” Clothes played another important role in the film, as they showed the general temperament and disposition of a character. Belle, in the beginning of the film, wore a very plain, blue dress. This showed that she didn’t get much enjoyment from having nice things and was happy enough with just her collection of books. The Beast’s clothes showed much more about his character. When he is first shown, the Beast wears an old pair of frayed pants, and a cloak to keep warm. Later, when he learns to control his temper and act more like a human being, we see him in a cloak and a white shirt, then a smart jacket and trousers. When he has finally won Belle’s love, he has a
Disney’s Beauty and the beast is a classic princess story from 1991. The story is about a young prince named Adam who gets cursed by an enchantress because he is selfish. He is turned into a beast and the only way to break the curse is to love someone and be loved in return. The beast does find someone to love when a girl named belle comes to rescue and take her father’s place at the beast’s castle. Meanwhile back at Belles village a man named Gaston has plans to make Belle his wife and is not happy when belle refuses and falls in love with the beast. Gaston then does a number of questionable actions to try and get Belle to marry him.
She tells him that she only wishes to see Maurice again, just for a moment. The Beast takes her to the West Wing, where earlier in the show she discovered the withering rose, and gives her a magic mirror, explaining that it will allow her to see anything she might desire to see. Belle asks if she can see her father and the magic mirror reveals that Maurice is lost and sick in the forest. The Beast, having fallen in love with Belle, releases her to rescue her father and also gives her the mirror so that she may look back and remember him. Belle hurries off, finds Maurice and takes him back to the village, where a mob gathers to take him to an asylum, a plan arranged by Gaston in a very enthusiastic musical number. Gaston offers to have Maurice spared if Belle agrees to marry him but she still refuses. Belle uses the magic mirror to show the Beast to the villagers, who become frightened at his hideous visage. Belle assures them that the Beast is kind and gentle, and that he's her friend. Out of jealousy and anger, Gaston tells the mob that Belle is as crazy as her father. Belle disagrees and calls him the real beast for wanting to kill him. She tells him off that she sees him as nothing more than a sexist, narcissistic, rude, obnoxious and selfish jerk. Insulted, Gaston rallies the villagers to storm the castle and "kill the beast," convincing them that he is dangerous to the entire
Throughout Fairytale history, there has been numerous tellings and retellings of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ story. The mediums used to portray this evolving narrative greatly influence and affect what aspects of the tale are emphasised and how this positions the audience. Beaumont’s La Belle et La Bête, the eighteenth century version of the tale greatly differs from the Disney modern retelling through film, Gary Trousdale’s Beauty and the Beast (1991). Although the narrative of both tales may be similar, a disparity exists between them. Aspects such as the portrayals of both Beauty and Beast, the emphasis on class and the way female characters are positioned in the story differs from literary tale to screen. Much emphasis is placed upon both
Experiments were even made to determine whether the attractiveness of someone impacts how they’re treated by strangers. The author, Keith Morrison, of Face Value Hidden Camera Investigation: Do Looks Really Matter? gives the reader his opinion saying, “Sometimes we attach too much importance on beauty” He bears the questions, “Does preference for physical attractiveness go deeper than romance? Are beautiful people treated better, at say a bank or at a doctor's office?” Those questions are answered by an experiment made by
Social hierarchies with obvious class divisions are a reoccurring theme that Disney attempts to portray through the use of imagery in the film The Beauty and the Beast (2017). The film illustrates a local village that is portrayed as an uneducated, working class that are trading various goods between each other. Gaston is a character within the film who is a desired hunter that seems to be at the top of the working-class hierarchy within the village. As the film progresses, Belle, a common female villager, is held captive within the beast’s castle and when her father tries to save her by explaining the situation to the village, Gaston denies his request and alienates her father from the village. Gaston uses bold statements such as, “I’ve heard of the effects of dark magic, but I’ve never before seen it with my own eyes!
The plotline of Beauty and the Beast begins with the short backstory of an arrogant and uncaring young prince. On a stormy evening, the young man would not admit a strange, ugly beggar woman to stay the night in his castle,
It is nothing out the ordinary today to be concerned about one’s looks. Many go out of their way to enhance their appearance and are more obsessed with their looks than they would like to admit. Self perception on appearance is practical and understandable, as attractive people are believed to have distinct advantages in our society. What triggers the need to appear acceptable to others does not however, measure a person’s actual qualities. A physical trait on someone does not describe in any way what the person may be like. It is understandable that after living with the wide variety of beliefs we conform to through personal experiences and the influence of mass media, we start to believe what we see. Due to our exposure to the repeated images of mass media, many people naturally wish to be
Hello, I am the one, the only, the beautiful Gaston! I am truly the most beautiful man in town, and I am out to get Belle. She would be a lovely acquaintance to me while I am hunting. When I come to visit her, she makes great dinners, and will always rub my feet after a long day of looking in a mirror. It’s very tiring to stay this perfect all of the time. You wouldn’t understand, that’s my issue.
When the movement begins Beauty is portrayed by solo clarinet with a graceful waltz, this creates the pictures of a young beautiful princess wander and prancing around the castle. Throughout the piece Beauty moves between the instruments of solo flute then solo oboe. She is depicted in these light dance like melodies to give the audience an image of her. She is a young princess who remains positive and bring love into the Beast’s heart. In contrast to light beautiful melodies of Beauty, Beast is depicted as a ponderous and awkward contrabassoon. When the Beast melodies
“You take me as your prisoner, and now you want me to have dinner with you, Are you insane?” These words from Belle perfectly illustrate how she felt as she was a prisoner in the Beast’s castle. People often say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone has the same opinions about what is attractive, but society today continues to set standards on how a beautiful person should look like. These standards greatly vary from one culture to another and they continue to change through the course of time. We cannot deny the fact that physical attractiveness can give you an advantage in this world – be it in your work life or in your personal life. People tend to look at how symmetrical your body is or how proportionate your features are to one another, but we should not be forced to conform to these standards and they should also not dictate how successful we can be in life. For example, the United States of America is one country that has a culture evidently promoting beauty standards. To them, a beautiful woman has fair skin, a slim, sexy body, and soft features while an attractive man has a muscular physique and sharp features. These characteristics put pressure on people telling them how they should look because these are what different industries look for. It is no question that the first thing people would notice about you would be your looks – first impressions always count.
In today’s social standards, being attractive has numerous advantages. For this reason, people are obsessed with appearances as they believe that it is
