On the path to becoming a coder Teryn Hite Mop 110 Ms. Herzberg September 8, 2015 On the path to becoming a coder To prepare myself to be a successful coder here are some organizations that can provide excellent training and the means to get the credentials that I need. There are three main organizations to help me achieve my goal. These three organizations are (AHIMA) The American Health Information Management Association, (AAPC) American Academy of Professional Coding and (NCCT) National Center for Competency Testing. “ The American Health Information Management Association’s primary goal is to provide the …show more content…
It also provides the highest standards for training of medical coding by providing training, certification and ongoing education (“About US-Medical Coding, CPC-H, COC, CPC-P, CIRC-AAPC,”2015). I can also become a member of this organization which would allow me to take this exam for $275 which includes one free retake. The requirements for this exam is an anatomy course, CPC prep course and to have my application in four weeks prior to the exam date. The NCCT offers many different routes on taking their exams in order to earn different credentials. If I was to choose a route I would need to have completed an insurance and coding course from a recognized NCCT school. One year of verifiable full time experience as an insurance coder within the past five years and have a high school diploma or GED. The price of this exam is $90 if you have graduated and take it within six months of graduating or $135 if you’ve graduated but took it after the six month mark. I could earn insurance and coding credentials. In doing my research I have found three potential job listings as a coder. The first job is a coding support full time day worker located in Wildomar at a place called Southwest Healthcare System. The requirements of this particular job are one year experience in healthcare settings and a CCS certificate. The second job is located in Temecula as coder for a place called The Lawton Group. They are looking for five years of experience with CCS credentials and I would need to be able to work 40/hours per week at a hospital. This place has three openings
In the article, “Learning How to Code Switch: Humbling, but Necessary,” I learned that I can relate to Eric Deggans to my own experience. When growing up I had to code switch, an example when I was in elementary and I was in Bilingual classes from Kindergarten to Third Grade. Then when fourth Grade hit my school wanted to switch me to an English class not a Bilingual classes anymore. My mom that day had a lot of thought about it and she said it was fine that the school suggested that, so I switched. The change was different because I couldn’t speak Spanish in my 4th grade English class anymore and I had to code switch to just speaking English to the rest of my classmates. And when I saw my Last 3rd grade bilingual class moving to 4th grade
The new job title could be a medical coder 1. I choose this new title because the medical coder is a health care professional who analyzes the medical records, medical charts and assigns the appropriate codes. Most of the job’s responsibilities of a medical coder are required for the inpatient and the outpatient coder’s jobs. For example, medical coder’s responsibilities are: reading and analyzing patient records, determining the correct codes for patient records, interacting with physicians and assistants to ensure accuracy, using codes to bill insurance providers, and maintaining patient confidentiality and information security. In addition, the minimum required certification of this job is CPC or CCS and RHIT with at least 4 years of experience. Those certifications are given to a Coder who can read and assign correct diagnosis International Classification of Diseases or ICD-10-CM, Current Procedural Terminology or CPT, supply Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System or HCPCS code for a wide variety of clinical cases and services, and read and assign PCS codes. The skills of this job are same as the skills of the

As viewed by many HIM professionals Computer-assisted coding is a valuable tool for enhancing the effectiveness of coding and billing. CAC software scans medical documentation in the electronic health record (EHRs) using a natural language processing (NLP) engine, identifying key terminology and proposing codes for that specific treatment or service. Human coder then revised these codes. CAC can also investigate the background of key words to conclude whether they need coding.
I am interested in the Health Information Specialist position that I noticed on the Mayo Clinic Jobs website. I am a University of Wisconsin – La Crosse graduate with a major in Biology – Environmental Science and a minor in Microbiology. Since graduation, I have worked for the La Crosse County Health Department. Most of this time was spent working in Vector Control where I was part of a team that regularly sampled for mosquito larvae and treated the areas accordingly with larvicide. We also spent a great deal of time canvassing cities and towns in various counties for urban mosquito habitats, such as tires and containers. We then were able to inform residents about the risks of vector borne diseases. To gain more experience in other areas of the health department, I worked as an Environmental Health Assistant. In this position, I helped the Sanitarians by regularly sampling and inspecting

The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) offers surgical tech certification, awarding the Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) designation to those who pass its exam and meet certain education and/or experience requirements. The most important element in becoming a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist is the training and certification need to enter the field and for advancement. You will need a program that provides an understanding of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. This program should also navigate the three topics: ICD, CPT and HCPCS. These codes help you document the conditions of a patient and describe the procedure performed on the patient. When you have completed your training there are several certifications you can test for. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offer certification for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA). You will need AHIMA membership and an exam fee ($199- $299), a high school diploma or
-Inpatient coders have certifications allowing them to work exclusively for hospitals or facilities. An expertise in medical record review is a must, along with an up to date status with coding rule changes, regulations and issues for medical coding, reimbursements and compliance under MS-DRG and Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems (IPPS). Coders should have experience as well as expert knowledge in abstracting information from medical records for ICD-9CM vol. 1-3, specialized payment in MS-DRG and IPPS.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Medical Coding and Billing field is growing faster than any other field (Medical Billing & Coding Careers). The reason for this is that the more doctors’ offices open up, the more the need for medical billers and coders. As of today there are over 8000 codes being used to describe every procedure you can imagine (Sloviter, Sept-Oct 2009). Now think about being a doctor. It would be really hard for a doctor take care of his/her patients and keep track of all those codes. The field of medical coders and billers has a pay range of $8 to $10 per hour to start. However, that is also based on experience. The more experience, the more the pay. Considering that being the pay for full-time, plus any benefits such as vacation, health packages, and retirement packages – it may not seem like
Due to the growing inpatient/outpatient requirements, as well as the impending update to the ICD-10 codes; the spearfish regional hospital is in dire need of a new Computer assisted coding system (CACS) with ICD-10 code language. Included in this report will be a detailed report of the technologies being requested, as well as information on these vendors 3M, Nuance, and Optum who can supply these
