How to be a Lifeguard As you watch your TV show or a movie you might catch sight of a lifeguard and wonder, “How do I become a lifeguard?” Though the job isn’t as glamorous as Hollywood portrays, becoming a lifeguard is a great experience. Becoming a lifeguard does, however, require some physically demanding training and social skills. With the proper training, you can also be the lifeguard at your local pool. To begin the path to become a lifeguard, you must first find when your local pool is taking applications. Being observant is the key here to find the listing in your local newspaper. Additionally, your school also may announce the applications are being taken at the time. Before you apply, you must first question yourself if you are …show more content…
One lifesaving necessity lifeguards must know is CPR [Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation]. CPR is a mixture of compressions and breaths performed to restart or get the heart beating consistently again. This is a lifesaving maneuver, but can be harmful if not used properly or if not done at the proper time. Another tool to help restart and normalize a heartbeat is the AED [Automated External Defibrillator]. The AED is a portable shocking device that has pads that once placed on the body, can determine whether or not the patient requires an electric shock to help the heart beat once again consistently. Finally, the last requirement taught in training is First Aide. First Aide assists in treating injuries, ranging anywhere from a small scrape to administering an epinephrine pen to making a tourniquet to stop severe bleeding. Hopefully, you will not need to use all of your training, however, some sort of accident or injury is almost imminent. Consequently, these training methods are vital to prepare a lifeguard to help in any situation that he/she is …show more content…
Firstly, children are the primary costumers of the pool, and a lifeguard must not allow them to get on their nerves. Secondly, children attend swimming lessons that lifeguards will teach. These lessons require you to teach with hands on methods and helping children to obtain proper form. Many times children will not cooperate and would rather play around; or, in some cases, water scares children therefore working with them becomes difficult. In all these cases one must have patience and not lose their temper, for a temper can only worsen the situation. How to teach a child swimming lessons is primarily the level of swimmer the trainee is. Teaching can consist of perfecting dives and strokes, and other times you must teach kids to simply be comfortable in the water and to plunge underwater without fear. Taking lessons slow and not rushing a child is important in administering lessons. Lastly, having fun is an important rule for any job. To be successful at any job, you must enjoy it. If you are miserable at your job and aren’t being happy or enjoying the experience, you will not do a satisfactory job. Also, ask yourself if you don’t like your job, why are you even doing it? Not all jobs are for everyone, finding one you can impact and contribute to is a key step to success. If you can find happiness in your job, your joyfulness can also spread to your coworkers, thus generating even more productivity
Firstly, you need to get the proper equipment. You will, of course, need a surfboard. The fun board, as well as the foam board, is recommended for beginners. They are easy to balance and turn on. After you have your board, you need to get a leash. It is an essential equipment to have because it makes sure your board does not float away. Surfboard wax is also important because it keeps you from slipping off your board, so make sure to get it.
With around 650 people in the water at once, I learned to scan the area of the water quickly and efficiently and to never focus solely on one specific person; on specific occasions, I was too ready and entered the water, only to find that a patron was faking a drowning incident for attention. Additionally, I learned how to comfort a frightened child who had almost lost their life, or who was bleeding after falling and scraping their leg. Lastly, I had to assert myself over patrons who refused to listen, and use my authority to remove people from the pool. The experience from my (so far) one year of lifeguarding has alredy provided me with skills in preparation for a brighter and more successful
Whenever an adult is in need of CPR you will have to immediately check for a response from the person that is having a difficult time breathing and talking. Once you check for a response you then will need to either have someone call 911 if there is someone else near you or immediately begin CPR which you will start to pump the persons chest 30 times in the very center of their chest, once you have done that you will pinch the persons nose while you are blowing air into their mouth and then call 911 for help to arrive while still giving the person CPR.
The world is full of heroes. The brave men and women who serve in the armed forces protect the United States of America. Local police help ensure safety in cities and towns. Firefighters save lives daily. Doctors perform life-saving surgeries. Heroes are found everywhere. Although some people seem to forget, lifeguards are heroes too. I recently sent in an application to be a lifeguard at the pool on campus. I was discussing hours with a classmate who is currently employed, and he told me that the hours were long, but often a shift would pass without a single swimmer entering the water. Another classmate interjected saying “You can do your homework while you work.” Lifeguarding is not the easy task portrayed in movies. Guards do not suntan and talk to girls for the duration of their shift. Rather, a lifeguard’s duty is in the name: guarding the lives of patrons. The work of these heroes is often gone unpraised. The job is disregarded as an easy way for teenagers to make money, instead of the true challenge it offers to the employees. The process of becoming a lifeguard requires more than blowing a whistle. It is a commitment involving intricate knowledge acquired through training and experience. Lifeguarding is a serious commitment.
First, you need to know the safety precautions. You absolutely have to know how to swim and be able to swim well. If this is a problem for you, you can easily contact a nearby gym (like YMCA) for and instructor to teach you how. Another growing issue with surfing is the strong currents and tidal waves. There are ways to predict the safety of the water on that particular day, but for now, just ask the
In traditional lifeguard training, lifeguards are only taught basic first aid skills, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and bloodborne pathogen training. The additional course of Injury Prevention
Honestly ever since I was two years old I have been in water, and learned how to swim at around three. I had not learned anything about swimming in Wheeling High School and I can prove that I did not benefit from the swimming sessions. I had already known survival techniques such as not panicking in water and floating on my back to save energy. I already had common sense of not using drugs because I could drown. I had known that many college students go to Lake Michigan at night and die because they can't see or are drunk. To be honest I knew all of these rules but feel maybe Wheeling high school had re-emphasized all of them. I will try to use these techniques at my pool in Florida and continue to teach others how to swim.
Everyone at one point in their life will have to go into a pool, or a body of water. I recently taught a swimmer in grade 6, let’s call him Steve. Steve was taller than me, and he was in a class with 5 year olds. Steve had gone 11 years without knowing how to swim. I bet you that his parent’s didn’t know how to swim either because if it takes so long for you to sign up your kid in lessons, then you must not find swimming much of a priority for yourself either. Steve had gone 11 years of his life being at risk of drowning. Lessons start for kids as young as 12 months old. Everywhere you turn, there are swimming lessons available! Your child can learn to swim anytime in their life, but get it done early because learning to swim is like riding a bike(analogy), once you know how, you never completely

He is a lifeguard so he can use the pool for practicing laps and diving. He chooses to have no relationship with the children that swim there. “Keeping snot-nosed kids from drowning themselves is the only price I have to pay.” Keeping busy,
Thesis/main topic – Learning how to swim is essential for being around water, it will help strengthen a person confidence, improve your physical fitness, and provide an area for stress release.
In late October of 2016 I was contacted by the Aquatics Director about upcoming lifeguard classes. I was very nervous and excited at the same time. Nervous because being a lifeguard meant that I had a huge responsibility and I couldn’t take the job lightly. I was also excited because I’d have a job and I could be making money. After some speculation with my parents, we decided that getting a job would be a great way of gaining responsibility.
Let's hope you are never in a situation where someone is in need of CPR. CPR stands for "Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation". If you are CPR certified, you then have the ability to save an individuals life. As an Emergency Medical Technician,I went through special training, where I was required to have learn how to preform CPR.
(2007), reported the main risk factors for childhood drowning, was lack of barriers between dam and children, improper installation of fences around swimming pools. Moreover, there should be constant vigilance of parents and caregivers and they should be educated via various educational programs in order to spread awareness among the risk factors involved in child drowning in swimming pools (Yang, 2007). Kenneth et.al. (1995), reported that if a child is given water safety training during swimming, there are less chances for them to get drowned. A water safety training program is being implemented and was designed for school age children and three set of skills was targeted, deck behavior, how well one can do swimming and water safety skills. Children’s Hospital and Medical Center director gave about 10% of lessons to children and their parents. Positive results and improvements were seen in water recovery skills of children after eight lessons and were associated with swimming ability of the children (Kenneth et. al,
