An internist is a doctor of internal medicine with the ability to treat people who experience health issues pertaining to their internal organs or systems. Internists can specialize in extensive scopes of medicine such as cardiology, gastroenterology, and oncology. They can also provide a variety of treatments depending on the specific body system they specialize in. Because of this, I want to become an internist so I can impact the internal health and well being of others. Internists are qualified physicians that prevent, diagnose, and treat patients because they are highly educated. Internists are required to earn a doctorate degree. It takes a minimum of 11 years to become an internist because they complete 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and depending on their specialty, 3 to 7 years of a residency program. Additionally, many skills and personality traits are necessary in order to …show more content…
A few fundamental personality traits for internists are being compassionate, precise, dependable, and disciplined. Those traits are important because internists encounter many patients with differing health problems, so they have to thoroughly analyze the problem to diagnose the patient and consider the benefits and detriments of particular treatments. I believe that I possess a few of the essential personality traits because I heavily focus on detail when doing work and always try to understand others in their most difficult times. I also think that pursuing a career as an internist would suit me because I have many experiences in the medical field. My parents are physical therapists who provide therapy to adults, so I know a little bit about how to deal with adult patients. I have also volunteered at nursing homes where I chatted with people and led them in activities. I believe that these experiences give me knowledge on providing care for
In order to become a General Internist, a student must go through medical school. Before they can enter medical school, students must receive a bachelor's degree. As they are
In college, a student must study courses to prepare for medicine, such as biology, chemistry, and some advanced mathematics (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). The first four years, the student would take pre-medical courses while earning their Bachelor’s degree and taking courses that are required for their degree plan. Then the college graduate will advance into medical school, where for four years the student learns about the area of medicine they choose (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). It generally takes seven to eight years to finish a medical doctor’s education (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). After medical school, the graduate will apply for an internship that would last about one year. Then after the internship, they become a resident and practice medicine under the supervision of a senior doctor (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). Altogether, it is about 11 years before one actually becomes an independent doctor (“Becoming A Doctor”
A physician assistant is a medical practitioner who works under the supervision of a licensed doctor. However the doctor does not have to be present while the physician assistant performs. If a doctor is unavailable and it is an emergency the physician assistant or PAs can talk over the phone with a doctor. Fewer than 100 PAs were practicing in 1970 and about 74,800 physician assistants are employed in the United States now (“Physician”). Physician assistants help the community everyday by helping with illness, and a lot of other health issues. They work every day to help and treat people and they are a big help to doctors. Pas alleviate some stress from the doctors and creates a healthier environment for everyone.
Internal medicine physicians provide compassionate care across the spectrum from optimal health to complex illness. They are specially trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that affect adults. In fact, internists are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems.
I felt motivated about the knowledge of semiology and pathology of diseases the internists possess. In the same way I truly enjoy diagnosing challenging medical conditions.
My passion for becoming an Internist began while working as a behavior analyst for the May Institute. Serving adults and children with a broad variety of developmental disorders provided my initial impetus and foundation. Working closely with individuals and groups as a case manager, created the desire to treat these individuals and further improve their lives. This experience motivated me to become a medical assistant, further exposing me to complex cases and clarifying my decision. I completed medical school to become an part of a multidisciplinary team to enhance the lives of people and their families stricken with intricate cases, as this tended to push the boundaries of who I am and what I am capable of more so than any other specialty.
It all starts with the office. In most cases, the clinic, or office, is a branch of a hospital. Each office usually has a Dr, or Doctors that use the space for their clinical. Each of the doctors usually goes to school for the same amount of time but might specialize in different body parts. For example, all of the doctors go to school anywhere between ten and twelve years depending on their specialty (. They are among some of the highest paid careers with a salary of $429,428. Most of the school for doctors includes a lot of anatomy, physiology, biology, pharmacology and math.
Surgeons treat any injuries, diseases and deformities through operations. A large number of surgeons usually choose to perform general surgery, a lot of surgeons choose to specialize in a specific area. Surgeons examine patients, perform and interpret diagnostic tests and counsel patients on preventative healthcare. Some examples of the specialties that surgeons do are orthopedic surgery which is the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. Neurological surgery which is the treatment of the brain and nervous system. Reconstructive surgery which is to perform or treat structures of the body affected by defects, abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. The last one I’m going to name is cardiovascular surgery which is the treatment of the heart and the profession I want to pursue.
Unlike surgeons or even nurses internist do not physically treat the patient. their job mostly consists of diagnosing the patient or finding out what's wrong with the patient.(“ Britannica School High”). According to the American college of physicians, “Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.” (“Acponline”). Physicians are trained and equipped to handle with whatever issues patients present them with. No matter how common or rare, simple or complex it is their job to treat the patient to the best of their
My long journey to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a doctor has provided me with the opportunity to balance my passion for science with my eagerness to provide care to those in need. My desire to reach this dream has and will continually fuel my passion for a field that I love and this desire is reinforced with every rewarding opportunity I experience as a healer, a thinker, and a friend. My interest toward internal medicine started growing during my clinical years when I had the opportunity to rotate through many different specialties. I have observed each to have its own unique commendable approach to healing. Nevertheless, what echoed through my mind and heart was "internists are the ones whom people think of when the need calls."

Almost all physicians complete at least 4 years in an undergraduate school, then 4 years of medical school, and 3-8 years in an internship and residency programs. The only thing that gives me doubts about going into a career in medicine is the amount of time you’re in school, because then once you get out school I’ll will have to go into either an internship or a residency program for a good amount of years before I will be able just to go out and find the job I’m looking
