Benjamin Franklin Charity Whitefield

This selection gives interesting insight into the world of Franklin, relating both to his everyday habits, and his reactions to the Enlightenment. There was one very interesting, but small segment, towards the end of the selection. It read, ‘It was about this time I conceived the bold and arduous project of arriving at moral perfection; I wished to live without committing any fault at any time; I would conquer all that either natural inclination, custom, or company might lead me into .. . . But I soon found I had undertaken a task of more difficulty than I had imagined.’ This particular section of the source was very revealing of Franklin’s character. Throughout the entire paper, Franklin had discussed different aspects of his upbringing, and current lifestyle, however this quote reveals more about the man behind the paper than anything else. Yet, he spent most of the text comparing his life to religious teachings, and the paths that the Enlightenment opened.

He affirmed that people could be ethical without having a religion or believing in God. Franklin’s philosophies general followed the principles of what became known as “The Age of Enlightenment. He based his philosophy on the belief that man had the ability to think for themselves and the power to do good for mankind and use their talents for the betterment of all.He concluded that people could build their societies without being told how and what to do by one government that ruled all. While Franklin was certain that there was a higher power, he also accredited man, with the capabilities of securing his own happiness through self discipline and hard work. Franklin defended freedom of religion and that the basics of most religions were to do good to others. Therefore, at some point on earth or in the hereafter, those who sought the route of crime would be punished. Franklin was a very witty man with a sharp sense of humor that was funny as well very competent. He made comments that would seem to make no sense at all, but actually made more sense than what anyone else had said. He sadly had gout in his foot, but that didn’t stop from being one of the most significant people in American history. Franklin also wanted the turkey as the national bird.

He was a private businessman who made enough money to retire early and to spend the rest of his life in politics. Around this time period only the rich were able to retire early. He was industrious. It is ironic how two men were both born during the same time period, in the same area, and had many similar ideas on one’s behavior, beliefs in God, and impacts on society; and they didn’t even know who they other person was! Both Ben Franklin and Jonathan Edwards were born in the eighteenth century, within three years of each other. They were both contemporaries and took time to write about themselves or their outlooks on life. They felt it was important to contribute to society and to share their ideas with others. Ben Franklin and Jonathan Edwards were similar and different in many ways, including their attitudes or perspectives on moral perfection, their beliefs in God, and their impacts on society throughout their life.

Franklin also gave many examples to the reader of his autobiography to practice diligence in minding the company they keep and gave much advice about keeping away from questionable establishments and having nothing to do with scoundrels. He wrote about the trials he underwent to become the writer he is known as today. He even was so intelligent he sought out to publish in his autobiography what virtues would have you “arriving at the door of moral perfection” (90). He wanted to show everyone that becoming perfect wasn't as arduous as everyone had thought. Thesis: In his autobiography, Franklin is undoubtedly concerned with developing virtue and self-improvement, but relies on others as the primary frame of reference for his own progress, always measuring himself with others. This habit of comparison results in the development of vices as well as virtues.

He was very loyal to his country and worked very hard to make things fair for them. On Britannica it stated, “Franklin was called before the English House of Commons for questioning. He presented the American position so clearly and reasonably that Parliament was persuaded to repeal the Stamp Act. Franklin was hailed as a great statesman for this accomplishment.” He stopped the Stamp Act which also means that he stopped the British from pretty much stealing their money. The British did not give the colonists a choice on the Stamp Act. They didn’t get to vote on it. Russell Freedman says, “When he tried to repel, Franklin had lost. But he supposed the Stamp Act could be tolerated.” And Lemay talked about how, “He wrote the young Philadelphia patriot Charles Thomson (11 July 1765), “I took every Step in my Power, to prevent the Passing of the Stamp Act,” but “We might as well have hindered the Suns setting.” Out of touch with the mounting American resentment, Franklin accepted defeat.” But in the end, the stamp act was gone and they didn’t have to pay a ton of money for printed paper. This influenced the War because it would give people hope. They knew that someone was on their side with power and knew things would change.
