Benjamin Franklin: Founding Father Of The US

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was one of seventeen children of Josiah Franklin, and his wife, Abiah Folger. Franklin’s mother did not conceive all seventeen children. In 1677, Josiah Franklin married Anne Child. They had three kids in England: Elizabeth, Samuel and Hannah. Then the family moved to Boston, having four more children. Their names were Josiah Jr., Ann, Joseph (I) and Joseph (II). After Anne Child died in 1689, Josiah soon moved on and married Abiah Folger. The two then had ten children: John, Peter, Mary, James, Sarah, Ebenezer, Thomas, Benjamin, Lydia, and Jane.

The first newspaper more or less in Boston. While other news came reprinted from abroad. The New England Courant held articles of opinions, advertisements, and ship schedules. His most famous invention was yet to come: the lightning rod. He found that when a small iron ball was electrified, it carried a magnetic charge. When he touched it with the tip of a pointed piece of metal, it lost the charge, but when he touched it with a blunt piece of metal, it was not nearly as effective at taking the charge away. If the metal was insulated from the ground, it would not take the charge from the ball at all. Before experimenting himself, he wrote multiple letters to the Royal Society in London describing his ideas and their implementation. The general idea of them was to have a very tall iron rod that would go above the building, that would attract the lightning, away from the buildings, into a wire that leads to the ground. This idea got the french king so excited that he ordered his scientists to proceed with the experiments. The first experiment worked wonderfully, then was repeated dozens of times all across France. Seeing the success, Benjamin Franklin decided to test it out for himself. He decided to use a kite, with a metal wire protruding from the top, and a key at the bottom of the wet string in order to be able to “draw sparks.” Eventually he got a charge to come from the key, and put it into a Leyden jar to experiment with.
