The excerpt from the story of Beowulf, tells of the hero’s triumph over the cannibalistic monster named Grendel. Although, the story if read literally is quite common for a hero’s tale, it truly is more about a hero’s duty, acceptance and loyalty. It ought to be stated that Beowulf is not a Dane, and so is not affected by Grendel’s attacks. However, Beowulf does not hesitate and once he hears of the suffering kingdom, he travels to defeat the monster. This highlights Beowulf’s character as a warrior who cares about the safety of others. This fits perfectly with the theme of responsibility as Beowulf as a warrior has the duty to protect people and the people he protects in return trust him, are thankful and accepting of him. This is the exact
The Great Heorot stretches high into the skies and the golden roof can be seen a day's trip away, but in the night no man dares to be seen there for the fear of Grendel. Beowulf: A New Telling is a good book to read if you are interested in the battles of good over evil. A young man is called upon to defeat the evil in the land of the danes he harnesses the bad within himself and uses them as his strengths. Beowulf is full of life lessons and is action packed, with the occasional mystery. In my essay I will be explaining the relations between good and evil.
Beowulf and Grendel depict the two ends of all that is good and all that is malicious. Beowulf being a warrior and part of the warrior culture, believes that what can be represented as good can be attributed to one’s individual reputation. Not only to Beowulf, but in the warrior lifestyle, it seems as that leaving a mark of bravery is an assurance to having a warrior’s memory live on even after they die. It is understandable especially with an occupation of being a warrior, Beowulf never knows when death is just around the corner. On the other end we have Grendel, the monstrous villain of this poem. While we portray Grendel as the villain and all that is evil in this poem, it can be said that Grendel was misunderstood. Grendel is an outcast,
In the Anglo-Saxon Era, to be a hero was to be a warrior. A hero should be strong, intelligent, caring, and most importantly courageous. Hero’s had to be willing to face anything, and fight to the death for their people and to receive great glory. In Beowulf, Beowulf’s actions are greatly defined as the typical Anglo-Saxon hero.
In the poem Beowulf demonstrates to be an epic hero with morality, bravery, and selflessness as he shows that one must fight for the good of mankind not for the good of oneself. “Beowulf arose with his men around him, ordering a few to remain with their weapons” shows Beowulf arriving to the Danes. (Line 134-136) He is there to assist them in defeating the beast of all evil, Grendel. Grendel has converted the
Judging from this passage, it appears as though Beowulf is being honored more lavishly than most of the Danish kings and warriors had been in the past. Beowulf's tragic death caused him to be remembered fondly and honored accordingly during his funeral:
Most readers find it hard to understand and sympathize with the antagonist of a story. When most think of Grendel, they picture evil and mayhem. However, this is because of the one sided portrayal provided by the novel Beowulf. By having another piece of writing that identifies the other side to the character that was not addressed, it allows the reader to see a different point of view and connect with the overall story even more; this is especially important in significant parts of the story. Both novels express distinct views on Grendel’s character, most powerfully shown during Grendel’s attack and demise.
In the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf the main character Beowulf shows us that a hero has extreme strength and willpower to achieve what he desires. Beowulf shows us a glimpse of his willpower during the fight with Grendel’s mother. Grendel’s Mother was immune to his blade, but instead of abandoning all hope, as most people would do, he tosses the useless blade aside and decides to fight her with his hands alone. “Fame comes to men who mean to win it, and care about nothing else.” Even though the situation looked bleak for Beowulf, he continued on. Beowulf also shows us his superhuman strength in his fight with Grendel’s Mother. Pinned to the ground by her superior strength, Beowulf never gave up hope, but instead he noticed a giant’s sword

Imagine a world where everyone is individually unique. Now, think on a larger scale. A world of heroes who possess incredible strengths and abilities, like Beowulf, whose attributes lends to his overall wonder. In each of these battles a trait or characteristics are performed in each situation such as .Beowulf’s performance of brave deeds, superhuman strength, and his willingness to die for the greater good of society, demonstrated throughout the novel, is proof of his outstanding moral character.
During the poem, Beowulf takes place in three major battles between Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. All three of these battles help tell us a lot about Beowulf’s character. During the first battle alone, we are able to see his brute strength. As Grendel is about to strike Beowulf in his sleep, Beowulf grabs hold of the creature and does not let go. Grendel is not able to free of Beowulf’s hold and must leave his arm behind, which eventually ends his life. A feast is thrown in Beowulf’s honor showing the Danes appreciation for Beowulf. That same night, Grendel’s mother attacks and retrieves her son’s arm. Beowulf gathers a hunting party to travel to the beast’s lair showing his dedication to the Danes people in solving their problem.
Waking up out of bed in the morning, going to school, work, or sports practice, or attending an event you otherwise wouldn’t be present at. The question isn’t where are you and where did you go, but the reason your body is moving in that general direction. Many people in the world tend to not have a purpose in their movements anymore, having little to no motivation to accomplish anything in their life. In the stories throughout history there are always multiple reasons why the characters, whether they’re good or bad, do what they do. Dating back all the way to ancient stories one of these studied people is the man known as Beowulf from old English epic poetry. He is an epic hero known for protecting people all around Europe from terrifying, unbeaten, undamaged beasts. He was also part of the period where the anglosaxton culture was built, and he was their main mold for what it meant to be a man and warrior of the culture. Being their spokesperson he had many reasons why he did what he did, and some were seen a little more clearly than others, The motivations of Beowulf are linked to the values in the anglosaxton code, and shown in his three monstrous battles in the epic, being glory, duty, and generosity.
Beowulf is a brave man, in a way that he offers himself as a saviour of Danes- by attacking Grendel. Beowulf does not care for his own death, he think and care for others life before his own. He faces many challenges, he fails, Grendel mother test his loyalty and strength, he lies to the King and his fellow men
It was early morning and the sun was just rising. Beowulf had just arrived back home after a long night pain and battling. He had just battled water monsters and grinded them to bits. He was ready to take rest but suddenly he heard a knock at the door, it was one of his people, he said that Hrothgar has summoned him. Beowulf quickly went to Hrothgar. Beowulf finally found Hrothgar. There was silence before Beowulf broke it and said, “What is the reason I have been called so suddenly?”. Hrothgar started to speak,”We will speak about that but first tell me, how did the battle with the water monsters go?” Beowulf replied, “It went well, I grinded them to bits. Though it was quite challenging.” Hrothgar spoke, “Oh that’s good, but now another incident
