Beowulf is an epic poem that involves a hero and many motivations for the hero becoming a hero. Just like any epic poem this one involves an epic battle. Of course this epic battle involves the supernatural. This hero is named Beowulf and the kingdom he protects is part of the Anglo Saxon vikings. This time of era there was certain codes you follow, pride, and your personal duties. These were all part of his motivations to battle the monster Grendel and then later Grendel’s mom when she comes to avenge Grendel.
Beowulf originally is from the land of the Geets, where he hears of this great generous king Hrothgar. When he hears of a monster attacked and none of the other men would fight it he knew it was his duty to go and jack this monster.

During this era it was a great accomplishment to be a hero and do what everyone else could not. This would put you at the very top and everyone around would praise you. Not only that but the king would see you as one of his own. This is exactly what Beowulf wanted and one of his motivations for killing the monster.
Lastly and most important he was following a code of that era. This code involved many things. To always do your personal duties, do whats right, the young respect and protect the old, and lastly to not let your head get to big but at the same time do the best you can. Hrothgar was getting to be pretty old by this time and even though he was a great fighter he couldnt handle Grendel. So following the code, Beowulf arrived to help.

Beowulf was the ideal hero because of all the brave courageous things he did to put the safety and protection of his people first also he was a very fair fighter. Beowulf heard about the attacks Grendel has been committing so Beowulf and his 14 men suited up and traveled to Herot to go and take down the evil Grendel once and for all. When Beowulf and his men arrived at Herot they went into the mead hall and had a feast with the geats and danes. Once the feast was over Beowulf's warriors went to sleep but Beowulf didn't he stayed up waiting for Grendel to come because Beowulf knew that Grendel fights unfairly by attacking at night so Beowulf being the fair fighter he is did not bring a weapon to use because he said ”I have heard that the monster's scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none nor will I”(. He isn't using a weapon because he doesn't want to fight unfairly and become a coward. So after waiting a little while Grendel comes up from his cave and goes into the mead hall and eats one of Beowulf's men so Beowulf took action
