Beowulf Is A Hero

Christopher Reeve once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endures in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In other words, a hero is a normal person who is able to be strong and persevere despite difficult obstacles preventing them. In the book, Beowulf, the the nephew of the king of the land of the geats, helps Hrothgar, another king, kill a series of monsters that threaten his kingdom. He helps Hrothgar kill Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and The Firedrake. Beowulf is a hero because he is just an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite the overwhelming obstacles preventing him from doing so. Beowulf embodies Christopher Reeve’s definition of a hero because he defeated the flesh-eating Grendel, who could not be stopped even by groups of elite soldiers. Beowulf also killed Grendel’s mother, a much eviler being who lived in a cave in an endless pool of blood that led to hell. Finally, he defeated The Firedrake, who swelled up and breathed fire when angry.

Countless people have tried to say that Beowulf represents the qualities required of an epic hero, but many people also suggest that Beowulf does not show any of these qualities. While Beowulf shows heroic characteristics in all of his acts, both pride and greed motivate his actions. The story of Beowulf contains all of the information needed to show this, but people do not notice that which they do not want to see.

Beowulf is an epic poem you can relate to life today. He was like any other hero very brave, loyal and a really great leader. His followers looked up to him and obeyed him. Beowulf also had a few enemies, but that wouldn’t stop him from doing anything to keep his people save from the monsters. In this poem you would see several ways that shows Beowulf being a great hero.

Beowulf is determined as a hero in my eyes, throughout the brave and heroic attributes that he had undertaken within this poem. When defining a hero in our first week of class, we had come up with the idea that a hero is someone who is: selfless, has strength, sacrifices everything that they have for the greater good and shows confidence. Beowulf has shown all of these attributes beginning with being selfless. Beowulf came to the Danes because he knew that he needed to not only keep his kingdom safe, but surrounding kingdoms. Beowulf’s heroism was defined on these next couple of lines. On line 193, “There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high-born and powerful. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves. He announced his plan” (Heaney, 15, 193-196). Beowulf knew the dangers that fighting this demon could bring, but he sacrificed everything he had. If Beowulf would have lost the battle, his Kingdom (Geats) would have been left with nothing and Hrothgars kingdom would still be under attack. Beowulf also shows his strength throughout the poem. When Beowulf arrives at the Danes, he shows no fear. Beowulf speaks with Hrothgar to learn what is true about his threat. Beowulf speaks giving the Danes much hope, line 294 “ whatever it is, this danger abroad in the dark nights, I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel” (Heaney, 21, 294-298). Beowulf is a hero and a leader, even if we look at him within modern times. Beowulf shows cause and reason to why he is at the Danes, he creates leadership upon his men and he has shown devotion towards this cause of wanting to defeat Grendal the demon in the poem. Every move Beowulf takes in this poem is what I believe we would want in the modern times of war. We want a leader that will be able to take charge and follow through with the actions they speak upon. In modern time, we also want a leader that protects our land and has their best opinion out for their Country. We want a leader like Beowulf. There is times that as a reader one could think that he is only completing these heroic attributes to uphold his overall reputation of himself, but isn’t that everyone’s main goal when completing a monumental task?

Why is it that we fantasize about hero's? As kids we didn't only want to meet then, we wanted to be them. We didnt understand what it really meant to be brave, corurages, and what it meant to serve justice. Many famous heros that we have come to know have a to known that have good qualties are like Captain America who serves justice, and even spider-man , they both have valor and justice.The story of the great Beowulf is one that was written by an unknown sorce. It is an epic poem from the Anglo-Saxon period. Beowulf is considered a Anglo-Saxon hero because of how much Valor, unselfiness, and sense of justice that he shows toward his king. Heroes are people with immense courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities, that set them apart from those around them. In the novel Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, a man by the name of Beowulf exhibits traits of hero in the probably the oldest English poems known. Throughout this epic poem, Beowulf takes on challenge after challenge, exhibiting his great strength and prowess in combat. Being a confident, selfless, and powerful king, Beowulf shows the traits of a spectacular hero to his people and those of other nations.

As the story is developing, and more details arise about who Beowulf is and what his past ventures are, it becomes clear that he exemplifies all of the characteristics of an ideal hero. That being said, Beowulf does possess some character flaws that lead to his eventual demise.

These acts proved Beowulf’s heroism, making him fit into the category of being an epic hero. It is important that on this planet we have heroes to get through all the heart ache one faces in the world. If not help those through the traumatic and devastating events life throws at them, then to get rid of it completely. It is important to remember that not all heroes wear capes. Some might think of heroes as movie actors with capes and stage makeup facing unrealistic conflict. Multiple heroes that are on earth today are just ordinary people that walk the same streets as everyone else. In the poem Beowulf he is a hero that did some unrealistic things.
