What a Hero
What makes a person a hero? What does he have to-do to become a hero? Today a hero is someone who is admired for his courage and determination. This courage helps a person become a hero and stay one. Beowulf is one of those people with the courage to become a hero. In the epic poem Beowulf, the unknown Christian author projects Beowulf as a hero shown by his descriptions of Beowulf’s heroic acts. Many epics have been written and read but are not taught in schools but because Beowulf is one of the best epic poems of all time it is still learned.
In the beginning of the story, a beast has been attacking king Hrothgar’s mead hall Herot. This monsters name is Grendel and when Beowulf hears of the he volunteers to go fight the beast.

A dragon attacks Beowulf and his people. Instead of sending warriors to fight the dragon where they will die he goes himself. Beowulf takes a sword and a shield to fight the dragon but runs into complications with the dragon. In the book it shows how the shield failed him as “The iron shield, and for a time it held, protected Beowulf as he’d planned: then is began to melt.”(Raffel 105) Then sword he uses is described as “he raised his sword and struck at the dragon’s scaly hide. The ancient blade broke, bit into the monster’s sin, drew blood, but cracked and failed him before it went deep enough.”(Raffel 105) He finally finds himself in defeat but Wiglaf one of his solders come to help him a together they defeat the dragon. Before dyeing Beowulf make Wiglaf makes king and thanks God for the treasure they receive form the dragon. Right before Beowulf dies he said that the “treasure was worth is for his people.” (Raffel 113) As J.D.A. Ogilvy and Donald C. Baker state in Beowulf’s heroic death Beowulf’s death is heroic because the dragon he slays is one he did not seek and one he can only win a partial victory. Countless people have tried to say that Beowulf represents the qualities required of an epic hero, but many people also suggest that Beowulf does not show any of these qualities. While Beowulf shows heroic characteristics in all of his acts, both pride and greed motivate his actions. The story of Beowulf contains all of the information needed to show this, but people do not notice that which they do not want to see.
Many people disagree on who might qualify to be a hero. While a few people could qualify to be called a hero, many people have done some heroic things at some point in their life; Beowulf and Cuchallain demonstrated heroism through their actions. A hero in the medieval times is considered to be someone that is a noble character that fights for his honor or the honor of his kingdom or community and also someone that is willing to risk his or her life for the greater good. Beowulf was a brave man that volunteered to fight a monster that was terrorizing the people of Herot. He heard about the monster, and decided to travel all the way to Herot to assist the king in defeating the monster. “ I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel’’
Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero.
Throughout the story, Beowulf displays many attributes of a hero. In the story Beowulf shows many characteristics of hero such as strength, courage, and intelligence. In the story, Beowulf displays these qualities of a hero in battles that he is involved in during the story. The battles Beowulf is involved in is how Beowulf earns his fame and gains these characteristics. In the story, Beowulf fights and defeats monsters around the different kingdoms in the story protecting the other humans in the story which leads to him being king.
A hero is one who is not only strong, but one who uses his strength to uphold others. A hero is humble, philanthropic, magnanimous and selfless, a humanitarian at best. In the unprecedented epic Beowulf, the tale’s namesake exemplifies every characteristic befitting an Anglo-Saxon hero. He is honest, loyal, and courageous. He portrays these characteristics in the battle against Grendel, the affray with Grendel’s mother, and the fight against the dragon that inevitably ended his life.
What makes you who you are? Is it the clothes you wear or simply what you say. People can be identified in many ways but what makes anyone a hero? A hero is someone who does something out of selfness of themselves rather than for themselves. Simply by saving an old womens cat in the tree can signify you as a hero to her. But, how do you become a hero to the world? How about saving people from burning buildings or saving someone from a bad guy. Anyone can be classified as a hero but it is hard to be seen by the world as a hero. Look at the story of Beowulf. He was well known by everyone and very strong. He was shortly defeated by a dragon but, that doesn't mean he's doings die with him. He will be forever known for what he accomplished. All Beowulf wanted was to be seen by the world as a hero.
A true hero does not fear death or, but instead risks all that he is for what he believes to be right, moral, and just. Beowulf is an epic and tells the story of a legendary hero, conquering all obstacles as if he was immortal. Up until the end of Beowulf’s life he was constantly looking to be the hero. However, his humanity is exposed by his death. Heroes all share the characteristic of their willingness to die in their effort to accomplish their heroic act, thus making the act in itself heroic. Throughout the epic, Beowulf in many ways exhibited all the qualities and characteristics needed to be a true hero.
He knew that fate would not be on his side but he knew that no one else had the chance to defeat this monster. Beowulf feels like it is his duty as a king to protect his people because he knows the dragon is going to continue to come around. Beowulf also shows how he protect his people in the final moments of his death. Even though he killed the dragon his mortally wounded caused by the dragon biting him on his neck and its poisonous venom kills the mighty hero Throughout his life he showed the characteristics and traits only a true hero could
When I think of a hero I picture the impossible. For most people a hero may be someone they admirer, but it is much more than that. A hero is someone who is willing to take a step outside of the box and do the unexpected, someone who is willing to take the extra steps. Beowulf is a hero because he did everything voluntarily and kept good morals and ethics while doing it.
Beowulf used his shield as protection from the dragon’s hot breath but it melted and failed him. Then his ancient sword he used struck the beast’s skin but cracked and had failed him to. It seems again Beowulf’s weapons have failed him and this time Beowulf cannot go hands on with the dragon so he stared at death as the dragon’s breath consumed
In the Anglo-Saxon time period there are certains values you should have to be considered a hero. Although this is defined as “a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”, in this epic poem Beowulf held these qualities in the great life he lived. Beowulf was the first epic poem written in the English language. For example, Beowulf demonstrates that he is on “a quest” by when Beowulf heard about the terror that Grendel was causing to Hrothgar and sailed the sea to come to the rescue.

However, an epic hero possesses a multitude of qualities, which makes them remarkable and different from the average hero. Beowulf is an epic poem that was written during the Anglo-Saxon era about a man, Beowulf, who decided to help fight off the king’s enemies. Beowulf is the epitome of an epic hero; throughout the poem, he exhibited great strength, great courage, great wisdom, and great loyalty. Also, he boasted to commit himself to action and longed for immortality.
The story of Beowulf takes place hundreds of years ago in a society that emphasized heros who were strong and brave instead of one’s that protected or helped others. We can see this in Beowulf because most of the emphasis of the story is on his fights, not his charity.

The epic poem Beowulf, is an Angelo Saxon tale that represents heroism and strength. This poem was written be an unknown poet between around 1000 A.D and showcases the heroic character named Beowulf who comes to save the land of Danes from the beast Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel and then faces his mother the evil monster who is killed as well and is viewed by all the people of Dane as a hero who can never be beaten. An evil Dragon comes and Beowulf is able to kill the Dragon but sacrifices his own life as he is killed by the Dragon’s poison.
