Most people in modern day society believe that heroes are like Batman, Superman, or even Spiderman. These fictional characters are children's modern day heroes since they are portrayed as brave, loyal, and fearless. However, as these children are growing up, their perception of a hero is changing when they come across celebrities, civil rights leaders, or someone highly inspirational in their life. According to the Anglo Saxon society, a hero is portrayed with the qualities of being brave, loyal, and fearless and these qualities are in the pagan warrior Beowulf. Just like Beowulf, the main character of “The Hunger Games”, Katniss Everdeen , who fights in a battle to save her district from poverty, is also an embodiment of a true hero. Though …show more content…
Both Beowulf and Katniss are brave heroes for risking their lives to save their people in times of difficulty. Beowulf exposes his bravery by “[taking] off [his] helmet and hand[ing] his [patterned sword]to his attendant”, knowing that having a weapon of any sort will make the fight too easy for him before facing Grendal.(Lines 672-673). This heedless and amazing action shows Beowulf’s bravery making him look courageous. Fifty years later, Beowulf goes to slay a dragon, he realizes that that dragon is powerful than him, “not one foot will [he] flee from the monster” (Line 1493). Beowulf shows his bravery by removing all available weapons and goes into battle with nothing but his bare hands. Therefore sacrificing his life, and defending the honor of his nations. Later on, Beowulf's battle with the dragon who is obviously much stronger than Beowulf himself, gets Beowulf to realize that his army abandon's him and leaves him to fight this battle on his own. Furthermore, Katniss Everdeen is quite similar to Beowulf when she exposes her bravery. Katniss steps up for her sister when she is called for tribute for the Hunger Games. She knows that her sister will be killed right away in the arena. Another way Katniss portrays bravery, is by crossing the border of her district every morning with her lover Peeta. They would cross it to go practice hunting and to get food that they
Christopher Reeve once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endures in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In other words, a hero is a normal person who is able to be strong and persevere despite difficult obstacles preventing them. In the book, Beowulf, the the nephew of the king of the land of the geats, helps Hrothgar, another king, kill a series of monsters that threaten his kingdom. He helps Hrothgar kill Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and The Firedrake. Beowulf is a hero because he is just an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite the overwhelming obstacles preventing him from doing so. Beowulf embodies Christopher Reeve’s definition of a hero because he defeated the flesh-eating Grendel, who could not be stopped even by groups of elite soldiers. Beowulf also killed Grendel’s mother, a much eviler being who lived in a cave in an endless pool of blood that led to hell. Finally, he defeated The Firedrake, who swelled up and breathed fire when angry.
Bravery is courageous behavior or character. Bravery is one of the most important themes in Beowulf. Ancient heroes searched for instances to make their reputation represent their courageous deeds. Beowulf announces to all who will listen that he will use only his strength and his bravery to rid mead hall of this monster who has been interrogating them for so long. As stated in canto 22 “He tossed his sword
What do Achilles, King Arthur, Harry Potter, and Beowulf all have in common? They all demonstrate the qualities of epic heroes. Beowulf represents several characteristics of an epic hero and demonstrates the values of the Anglo-Saxons. He is the main character of his story, he has a main goal, he travels and fights with a group of people, and he accomplishes many valorous deeds; the values of the Anglo-Saxons are also shown through the actions of Beowulf, such as courage, loyalty, and fame. For example, when Beowulf heard a cry for help in a far off land, he answered. He fought larger than life monsters, and won. His exceptional strength proves his epic courage and heroism.
The character of Beowulf demonstrates several characteristics that make a great epic hero. Throughout his lifetime he displayed several characteristics such as honor, bravery, physical superiority, leadership, and glory. These characteristics all formed how the Anglo-Saxons believed one should live their life. Along with the valorous deeds that Beowulf accomplished he is considered to be a prime example of an epic hero. Beowulf would have even been considered a model human to the Anglo-Saxons due to how he consistently demonstrated these qualities.
How does Beowulf's heroic acts compare to today's heroes. The definition of a hero is someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty, someone who cares for others more than himself, and someone who courageous actions that could get them killed in order to save someone. In regards to Beowulf, I believe that he fits those needs.
Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.”(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, “When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins... No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.”(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem.
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
Suzanne Collins demonstrates that the heroine Katniss is a good hero in “The Hunger Games” through bravery, inner strength and compassion. This is expressed through emotive language, repetition and descriptive language.
A hero, “a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character”(“Hero”). A hero shows much more than honor and glory, they sacrifice their own life to selflessly help out the lives of others. By having heroes it gives us hope, wisdom, and justice throughout the nation. The three main types of heroes include an epic hero, superhero, and your own personal hero. These heroes show that it 's more than the cape or armour they wear, they show the true meaning of a hero by defining sacrifice, loyalty, and determination.
Katniss does this by standing up for the unspoken that live in districts that are being treated poorly by the Capitol. She is never hesitant to speak up for what she believes in. Her courage led to a revolution against the Capitol. Her stubborn ways and “hard-head” give her the drive to never give up on something, until the goal has been accomplished. While Beowulf always risks his life for the greater good and is not afraid to fight on his own. His courage comes from his ability to fight on even when he is the only one. During his last fight he is left dying, but instead of giving up and leaving he sits and waits for his end. That is true courage, because he did not know what was next, but he was ready for whatever
A hero is not born; he is self-made with heroic qualities. What qualifies for making someone a hero? According to Merriam Webster, a hero is defined as: “ a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability”. Beowulf perfectly fits that definition of a hero. In Seamus Heaney Beowulf, Beowulf has everything it takes to be known as a hero. Some of Beowulf’s vital traits as warrior includes bravery, courage, honor, incredible physical strength, and the will to serve the people for the greater good. This poem is centered around him and that is all he needs to be portrayed as the hero he is.
The definition of a hero has been moulded and changed over time, but all heroes have shared some qualities, constructing our archetypal hero. Katniss, the 'hero' from Suzanne Collins, 'The Hunger Games' challenges and confirms our views of a typical hero. She has events like a heroes journey and a tough upbringing, but she also has conflicting attributes like simply not being a male. Suzanne Collins has created a complex character, who doesn't strictly fit into the mould of a hero.
A hero must do many things to be allowed the title of hero. However, there are some aspects a hero should not show. If these characteristics are shown, they should not be considered a hero. One attribute a hero should not display is selfishness. In the Knight’s Tale, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, Arcite and Palamon acted selfishly. They perceived a beautiful lady. They fought for the beautiful lady. They died for the beautiful lady. Nevertheless, they acted selfishly during this gripping story. For example, they fought for Emily, the beautiful lady, because neither could live without her. Nonetheless, neither ambitious young man could bother themselves to question her on whether she wished to marry either of these headstrong knights. She may not have desired to marry either of them. Therefore, they acted selfish and do not live up to one requirement of a hero. On the contrary, Beowulf, the main protagonist in the epic poem Beowulf written by an unknown source, did not act selfishly. Throughout the poem, he risked his life to fight horrendous monsters to save the good people living in the area. These actions define Beowulf as a hero. Contrarily, Sir Gawain, who starred in the book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, embarked on a dangerous journey. The Green Knight had tasked him to find the Green Chapel. Before finding the chapel, the tired knight came across a castle tucked away in the peaceful forest. When he asked to stay for a night, his host proposed a trade. The host would
Heroes, from Beowulf to Superman our cultures have always created heroes. We may always have political, social, economic and religious differences, but at the end of the day we all have one thing in common, heroes. They help define who we are and what we want to be. They give us hope and inspire us to head in the right direction. They show us that good will always triumph over evil and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Heroes give us the inspiration we need to overcome problems in our own lives and that is why we create them. Beowulf perfectly embodies the idea of a hero. He defeats the evil Grendel and his mother, slays the dragon and saves his people. He is
Philip Zimbardo, a psychology professor at Stanford University, once said, “I’m saying to be a hero means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes are always making a sacrifice. Heroes always take risks. Heroes are always deviant. Heroes always doing something that most people don’t and we want to change…”
