Best MAMA Performances of 2017
Now that fan wars have finally die down, let’s take a look at some of the best performances from Mnet Asian Music Award (MAMA) 2017. Unlike previous years, MAMA this year took place at three different countries: Vietnam, Japan, and Hong Kong. I’s happy that they decide to have the award show at different locations because that gave a chance for more artists to perform and have longer stages. I love every single performance from MAMA 2017 and all the hard work that the artists put in. It was not perfect because some of the stupid mistakes from Mnet. Yeah, I’m talking to you MAMA. The shitty camera work and stage set up ruined a lot of the performances, but the artists pulled through with their charismatic

Shame on you Mnet for reuploading the performances and causing Monsta X’s million views to fly out the window.
MAMA Hong Kong: The Force Of The Planet - EXO
EXO performed “The Eve”, one the best non-title track of the year by the way, and I got goosebump while watching the live stage. The dance at the chorus has to be one of the sexiest choreographies of the year. They didn’t have to do much, but the slow hip thrust and their attitude/facial expressions gave the song that smooth, sexy feel. I was dead after Kai’s solo dance, and I am sure others were, too. Gosh, Kai is such a talented dancer and he slayed that performance! Of course, they also performed their two popular title track, “Kokopop” and “Power. I like it when artists do something with their performance at year end award shows with remixes of their songs. EXO’s performance was definitely one of the best performances of the night along with BTS.
MAMA Hong Kong: Scene Of Love - Soyou, Chanyeol, Ailee
I stayed up for MAMA Hong Kong just to watch the collaboration between Soyou and Chanyeol and I wasn’t disappointed! I love Soyou’s voice to death and her performance of “I Miss You” is so calm and mesmerizing. Soyou’s voice really suit Stay With Me and I think she is one of the best singers Chanyeol has sung the song with. Chanyeol seemed to be sick because he could be barely heard. This was not his first time performing the song anyway, so he either was sick or
First, the overall tone in all three pieces was phenomenal, but there were a couple spots during the performance that were not as amazing as the rest of the performance. In the first song, Hamilton by Jerry Brubaker, it was hard to hear certain sections
In previous years, I’ve read some reviews about her concert and people say that she produces amazing performance and has a killer vocal sound. During the month of November of last year, she released her upcoming dates for 2016
the first band took the stage. The first band was my favorite of the three, Fuel. Fuel made
Brittany Russel sang “Nobody Love”, she sang with magnificent range and gave the audience a nice pair of chills down their arms, because you could tell she sang from a personal perspective. She carries this certain style where it’s very raw and emotional. To bring an upbeat into the room Madison Slamka and Gillian Marino’s performance of The Beatles “Come Together” allowed the audience to release their worries and stress of the week that lay behind them. Their duet performance was entertaining and colorful, the two girls added their own style which gave the performance an extra twist on the song. This allowed the girls to not just sing the same style as the original artist, but to take the next step and recreate a clever, melodic song into something that was their own. One of my favorite performances of the night was The A Cappella Group. Their three numbers were amazing and left me wanting so much more. Even though Callie Atkinson was a featured soloist performing Hold my Hand, the groups back up was essential for the emotional feeling of the song. As incredible as their performances were, there was this one distractions to the group. The random movement of their upper bodies drew attention away from the
The third act was lovely Eli Womble. He is not only a music major, but also on the soccer team. He was not alone and with him on stage were his very good friends. Firstly, he gave a shout out to his mother and girlfriend who sat on the front row. They played two songs clearly Womble had the most fans in the audience. There were a lot of soccer players in the audience who sung along with his song and clearly enjoyed their teammate talents. His teammate, Catawba soccer defense player Jared Bieber said, “He just gets better and better every time I hear him play, he is going to be a superstar.”
This was particularly exciting because the music was written and sung by Beyonce, a majority favorite. However, the costumes lacked coordination and seemed put together very last minute. Although, the purple and red vests did match the lighting which added a unique touch. The dance moves were fun and upbeat which allowed for the audience to enjoy themselves and experience the joy the dancers expressed. The dance truly attempted and succeeded at displaying the true spirit of Beyonce. Also, the dance moves seemed to have been carefully planned out to their fullest potential. The originality of the dance was exceptional which was one of the many components that cultivated its excellent
Ryland was the DJ, I was shocked at his talent, it wasn't as easy as it appeared to be, but it looked like a lot of fun. Although I shouldn't have been surprised, his whole family sweated talent. He had invited about 20 people, strangers to be, and maybe even to them.
This song seemed to require the most work from the performers as it used a wide range of dynamics, pitches, and tempo. The last song of the evening, and probably my favorite (not just because it was the last), was “Folk Dances”. This song, just like the first, had a very festive feel to it. The upbeat tempo, lead by the flutes and clarinets, made the song very enjoyable to hear and also had a very happy feel to it, which, in my mind, made it a very appropriate closer. The song started with a great tempo but a relatively soft dynamic. This quickly changed about half way through the song when the dynamics picked up. The loud dynamics with the fast tempo at the end of the song had a very grandiose sound and left the audience with a great taste in their mouths.
They showed great dynamics and balance. I felt that the dancer’s (The Golden Stars) piece was short and rushed. Their piece and routine didn’t even last a full minute (5:16-6:07). Now; I’m not of fan of vocals being featured in Marching Band performances unless it is done correctly. In order for performances like these to sound good, the band needs to have enough balance, dynamics, and technique while still giving just enough volume where you can still hear the vocalist. I will give Miles credit; they sounded fabulous, music wise. The technique was there, the dynamics were there (instrument wise), and the balance was there. The ballad “Stand” by Donnie McClurkin sounded amazing. However, I felt that there were times you couldn’t really hear the vocalist as he sung, but it did get a little better towards the end. I also appreciated the nice woodwind parts towards the end of the ballad. Miles College Purple Marching Machine did a really good job and was one of the most consistent bands on the
Now the music filled our ear and the dancers rushed out to the center of the stage with kicks, jumps, and arm swings that gave it a hip-hop, jazz with a little ballet vibe that stood out from other dances. It felt as if you were in the big city at night. People are rushing back and forth creating an intense feeling with the music picking up pace as well.
It was magnificent because I genuinely like the way the pieces were performed by the dancers. Having this show dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. made me fall more and more in love with each piece. You could follow the storyline of Martin Luther King, Jr. as each piece was performed. I could not take my eyes off the stage when watching the pieces because each piece was just as captivating as the next one. The pieces makes me as an audience member reflect on why we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Martin Luther King, Jr.. Day. I appreciate when a piece can make me reflect back on my life or reflect on the world around
Really high and loud all night long… including my self and my friends, the audience seemed really appreciating his hit medley at the end. It made us to believe that he plays over the top with excellent showmanship. Our waitress was little busy most of that night but the cocktail was good so it was okay and the lighting was perfect. Oh, one
Tyler didn’t miss a note. He stayed energetic the whole two and a half hours. Josh drummed so intensely and was so upbeat he had the crowd rocking out. Listening to their lyrics live, I felt inspired and at home. All of their songs have a deeper meaning behind them and a life lesson that can be taken from it. They are extremely influential to their fan base. Looking at them up on the stage, I saw the happiness on their faces. I could tell they were enjoying themselves and that they wanted to be there. That is a big part of concerts.
It started off with two saxophones, who I thought played beautiful together. They started off at the exact same time, which I thought was very impressive and was in unison their whole performance. I also enjoyed the sopranos that sang. They both had beautiful voices, but I liked the second one who sang Over the Rainbow from “The Wizard of Oz” a lot better. Her voice was softer and less aggressive. The flute and piano ensemble was probably my least favorite performance of the night. She seemed unconfident and hesitant about herself and her performance. It appeared from a listening standpoint that she missed or was off on notes, which is bad if an audience member
Especially the age difference. There were old people, middle aged, teenagers and even little kids. There was this one woman that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was just going crazy with the dancing, and was just singing out every lyric to every song. But what was more impressing, (especially since her dancing wasn’t) here kids that couldn’t have been any older than 9 or 10, were also singing every lyric. They were singing songs that I had never even heard.
