There was seven works in the show but I will focus on Rememory, Playful Musings, and the final show, TALK TALK TALK. The show was nice and involved dancing from many different students/dancer from Appalachian State University. The variety of dance styles differed greatly throughout the show with only two shows having similarities that made them seem like they had been choreographed by the same person. These dances were ballet/modern mixtures called Sacred Shapes and effervescence. Overall, the Fall Appalachian Dance Ensemble was an interesting show with ballet, modern, animal-like, and some goofy/playful dance movements that along with stage layout, lighting, etc. made for a good date with my girlfriend and I. Six dancers had a “partner” but one person was left out adding to the dynamic of the dance. This dynamic was creating a story for the audience to follow if they only follow the wave of movement. One group of dancers would float over to the single dancer using ballet and animal-like movements, yet the single dance moved as if in trouble. This single dancer received help from that group, yet everyone on stage would become this single dancer at some point. It created a story of helping others in their time of need, and it was a lovely story to watch unfold.
The seven dances were divided into two parts with an intermission that gave the audience time to stretch their legs. Before that intermission the performance, Playful Musings, took the most unique route in my opinion for the dance. It started out like any of the other dances with a low lighting, but right away the first dancer made his appearance on stage with style and a light-heart personality. It catches the audience right away with laughter, and filling the small concert hall with a totally different vibe compared to the other performances so

The first two shows didn’t leave much of an impression on me because of the pacing but the final show stood out from them. The curtains were pulled away and a bright blue, yellow aura bounded around the stage. Dancers began to take their place, yet they were far from the center of the stage. The most dancers out of any performance before were just about to begin and then the smooth jazz-like music roared out to the audience.
Now the music filled our ear and the dancers rushed out to the center of the stage with kicks, jumps, and arm swings that gave it a hip-hop, jazz with a little ballet vibe that stood out from other dances. It felt as if you were in the big city at night. People are rushing back and forth creating an intense feeling with the music picking up pace as well.
The Fall Appalachian Dance Ensemble was a great experience for me because I had never seen a live performance by our school or any other school before. It also served as a great date because my girlfriend is an avid dancer herself. We may go see the spring show if the school even does such a
Some of the movements executed by the dancers are similar to those executed by dancers in a stepping performance and also in a tap dance presentation. This presentation falls into the group of the new trends of modern dance, in which the choreographer are taking more and more liberty with various dance combinations, and including strong messages in their work. I would definitely attend other dance performance, not only from this company, but also by other companies; and would also recommend this performance, especially to people going through a dark period in their life. This performance finished convincing me that dance is surely the most communicative of the art forms, and that a single presentation can convey more than one
My name is Hamzah Sait, the date of the performance was the 23rd of April, and it was located at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. The concert was titled Jump Start which means it is the end of the old era and time for the young choreographers and dancers at the university of Arizona to shine and go around the world. The dances were basically performed by UA students that have been practicing throughout the semester, and they call it, spring collection. The names of the performances that I am going to talk about are as the following: The process, from our insides out, and Breakfast Burritos. And the choreographers for the pieces that I am going to discuss are: Tanner Boyer, Kira
All of the performances were beautiful and I loved how they all displayed a different story. The thing about the dances is that they all were very fluid and moved and danced with so much emotion. One performance that stuck out to me was City of Rain. The choreographer is Camille Brown. Camille Brown is a dance educator, director, dancer, and a choreographer. She began her career in Ronald k. Brown’s evidence, A dance company. Her performances and choreography has won her the Bessie nomination for Best Performance. Aside from City of Rain, Camille has created works such as Good & Grown, The Groove to Nobody’s Business, and Mr.TOL E. RAnCE. On Camille Brown’s webpage her mission statement says that her company wants to “present authentic performances that foster dialogue among audiences and local communities to instill a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the live arts experience in a social and aesthetic context”. So
The elements used in this concert were videos of a timeline of African-American dances. This was very helpful because it allowed the audience to know what time period they were looking at for a certain dance. There were different varies of costumes. There were costumes from the tribes danes, spiritual dances, 1902' dances as dancers, and etc. The dancers did an excellent job with combine the costumes to the era and it actually looked like pieces from that era. The lighting was very good and it allowed for the mood to be seen in the dances as well. When a dance needed to evoke a spiritual mood, the lighting would evoke that mood by only allowing light on the dancer and no one else. If it needed a joyful feeling, all the lights were on showing
In the beginning of the play, (pre-play) Oshoosi Size , Ogun Size , and Elega were on stage dancing to a form of a slow, gradual tone. They all ended their dance by getting their masks and fading into the darkness. That experience was honestly bizarre for me. But I believe the pre-play set the mood for the rest of the play. It did draw the audience into the environment because of the slow trance like tone, which built up, to a lively pace.
This dance was impressively in sync with the pre-recorded track and with one another. The couples had to dance together, lift one another off of the ground, use umbrella and others props, and stay in sync with everyone. In order for this to be successfully performed, the students had to know every step, transition, and rhythm like the back of their hand. The students were in sync with one another and danced with ease. The performance was so well done, it looked extremely easy and relaxed to the audience members. I personally was in awe by the advanced level and ability they were able to present.
That was until the “strange” music started and the dancers came out moving the portable flats to create imageries. It was really distracting having some of the dancers, usually a male and a female, narrate the story while others danced on stage the same time. I was so captivated and drawn into the dialogue being shared that I forgot at the initial part of the performance that I came to watch a dance. I had to adjust my eyes to see the whole stage so I don’t miss a
When I say wide variety of dancers I also mean dance types because there were tap dances, upbeat hawaiian dances, upbeat dances, hip hop dances, and many more. My favorite dances were the upbeat dances because it made the audience get hyped up and excited for the festival/concert even more than they were before. I personally believe that every single costume that the performers had worn fit their dances really well. For example, the song “Better When I’m Dancing” was performed by three girls who wore hawaiian style clothing, and it totally fit the music’s beats, lyrics, and personality
This piece was choreographed by Steven Rosa. The music that were used for this piece was a combination of three songs; the first song was by Vishal Dadlani, the second one was just a music by Shekhar Ravjiani, and the last one was a song by Daler Mehndi. This performance piece represented the Indian traditional dance. It was performed by twelve dancers including two boys and ten girls. They were divided in four teams, each team had a different color for their costume. This dance got the audience attention from the first minute they started to perform on the stage. One of the thing that grabbed the audience attention was the colorful customs that the dancers used for this specific dance. The dancers danced in-groups as well as in-lines. Also they were really organized on the stage. Appropriately, the dancers displayed synchronized and athletic movements with lots of Indian traditional dance movement. The repetitive beating of the drum in the background music helped to portray the momentum and the energy. The dancers tended to change the look of their customs while they dancing which created the feeling of watching multiple dances in one. The dancers were well communicate very well with each other and communicate very well with the audience as a group. This helped the dance to come out really interesting. The ending of the dance was so positive and appropriate finish. Overall, this dance was one of the best
The overall time and energy of the dance is what I will be discussing next. The time of the piece, it seemed to have a certain pulse to start with. The beat of the music gave the dancers a pulse to listen for to move positions. The overall energy of this dance was sharp and the weight was strength because it was an impact and most of the dancers were pushing to been seen (not literally but usually). Lastly the energy flow was bound because it was whoever the spot light was on is who held all the
The pathways used by the dancers were very remedial. The direction of the movement always seemed to move upstage right then back down to downstage left. The speed of not just the movement of the dancers, but the whole play in general was high beat and high tempo as well as some parts becoming super dramatic. The rhythmic patterns of the material performed were to a beat while being sung. There was a pulse in every song the dancers/actors were executing. But, there was not one off beat movement or part, that I could notice anyways, throughout the production. The overall piece of the performance was marvelous, I enjoyed sitting and watching. My favorite thing about this play was that the actors actually interacted with the crowd and didn’t just treat the audience like they weren’t there. I think that the director/choreographer was trying to put the message of it doesn’t matter what you look like, as long as you can act/dance/perform to the best of your abilities. Also, the performance was well put together and obviously had some time put into
But the thing I am most amazed is the dance of ensemble. From those videos I can see they are almost always on the stage dancing around the main characters. I think their dance plays an important role in promoting the development of the plot and setting the mood. The light effect and the background music played by Alex Lacmoire’s band are fantastic as well. Each piece of this musical is magnificent, and because designers, actors and director understand each other’s part and collaborate with each other well, a master piece, a musical as a whole has appeared in front of the
Watching this performance was the most inspirational and admiring show that I have ever seen. The amount of work each and everyone of this students put into their work was unexplainable. Each dance told a story. Two of my favorites were “Sistas of Sorrow “ and “527”. They both expressed a powerful story that was just breath taking. With their customs that perfectly gave you feel of the time that the story was taking place.
I liked the choreography for this dance because of the use of space and the use of music. An example from this dance is at the start I like how the music was the music was so perfect for this dance. Also how they use their space was so perfect to see all of them doing their part.
On December 1, 2017, in the University Theatre at California State University, Dominguez Hills, I observed the fall dance concert Rise. It was choreographed by Amy Michelle Allen, Marco A, Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker, with the long cast of dancers. The production was pleasing, and would not have been believable without the work from production designers, Frederick Depontee and Cheryl Sheldon. Rise is played out in eight different dance routines, which were Xtra Xtra, Scar Tissue, Hart Broken, Things Are A Stirrin’, and the rest are intermissions such as Female Energy, Women, Exotica, Strength In Numbers, and Makina.
