After the attack, she was nervous about getting into the water but was not going to allow it to suck the joy out of the sport. She was courageous and was ready to get back into the water. She trained herself to use one arm, to pull herself up on the surf board so she could surf again at the competition. The biggest thing was for her to learn how to pull herself up. She made an announcement that she wanted to be back on a surf board by Thanksgiving Day.

“Today nearly 40% of shark species are threatened with extinction.” (7) Bethany Hamilton was a 13 year old girl, who loved to surf. She lived in Kauai, Hawaii. Bethany was winning major amateur surf contests by her 10th birthday. One day she was on her surf board, a 15-foot tiger shark was stalking her. The shark then attacked her. Bethany was calm when it happened. The shark took off her whole arm in one bite. Despite the devastating shark attack, Bethany Hamilton showed great resilience in achieving her surfing dream.

Bethany would have died if it wasn’t for her composure. When the shark clawed onto Bethany’s arm, she called out to her friend explaining she has been attacked with a calm sense of mind. Bethany maintained her composure throughout the horrifying events. Bethany was then rushed to the hospital to have her arm amputated

Bethany Hamilton is a brave surfer who survived a shark attack and faced her fears to continue doing what she loves. She was born in Kauai in 1990 and started surfing when she was 4 years old. At the age of 8, she got a gold medal in her first competition and since then she would have the first place in every championship she took part of. She was so talented that she could do amazing tricks that surfers her age couldn’t. Therefore, she had Rip Curl as a sponsor. However, in 2003 she was laying on her surfboard with her left arm underwater and a tiger shark bit it. Luckily, she was accompanied by her friends, so they helped her to get to the beach. Although she had a tremendous fear, Bethany didn’t hesitate in returning to the waves

"When can I get back in the water?" (scope 8) Bethany Hamilton asks while laying in the hospital bed. She had just gotten attacked by a 15 foot tiger shark while surfing. With most tiger sharks, after they attack something, they go back to eat it. Bethany was lucky that she wasn't the sharks next meal. After the terrifying shark attack Bethany Hamilton demonstrated great resilience by overcoming the tragedy to achieve her surfing dream. There are a few words that come to mind when I think of her and her horrific experience.

When going through life, everyone needs a person that will be there with them every step of the way. A person to lean on to overcome the hard times and someone to rejoice with when life is at its highest moments. Thankfully for me, that particular person came to be a minute before I came into this world. My twin sister Kayla Skye Horton is truly my other half in life for an endless amount of reasons. Don’t many people get attacked by sharks 2 out of 10 people will be attacked by one each year. Luckily she survived the attack by staying calm and not panicking. Although it may not seem like it Bethany helped many people with achieving their dreams and never giving up.
