Which Was a Better System? Rome, or Athens? In this situation, there are two different civilizations. One is Rome, and one is Athens. We are trying to figure out which is a better system of citizenship. In my opinion, Rome is better. The two Mediterranean societies being compared are Athens and Rome, during about 509 BCE to about 1 CE.The difference in population and area between the citystate of Athens and the Roman Republic is that Athens had only 300,000 people, including slaves. The Roman Republic had 45,000,000 people. That's a 44,700,000 people difference. A logical guess would be that since Athens is so outnumbered by Rome, Rome can easily win a battle. The Roman Republic was the Roman way of government before it became an empire in …show more content…
Now, I’m sure that they usually had good reasons, but don’t kick them out! (Document D) Evidence of this is that when Athenians ostracized a fellow citizen, that citizen would be kicked out of Athens. I think that ostracism was not a good idea at all, because you are getting kicked out. In my opinion, that just isn't right. Rome controlled the privileges and benefits of citizenship by how they were. If they were a senate, they would be able to do many things. If they were a dictator, they would be able to do anything. I think that the censors having the power to rank and re-rank the citizens into different classes is not that good of an idea. I don't think that it is that good of an idea is because they are based on wealth to become one, and that isn't really fair to the ones that are actually really good at keeping that all in balance. In my opinion, the civilization that had the better system of citizenship from Document D is Rome. They were a little bit more fair with their citizenship. They didn't just kick people out, they just put them down to a higher level. It still was a good punishment, just not as bad as Athens. This evidence helps explain why Rome had the stronger system because they had better fighting
Rome and Athens were both superpowers during their time and paved the way for modern day western culture. There were a few things that Rome did better though including their citizenship system. The following reasons are why Rome’s citizenship system works better than Athens’. Firstly the Romans allowed a higher number of people to become citizens. The next reason is that Rome made sure that their citizens were playing a role in society. Lastly the Romans had a more organized and efficient senate than that of the Athenians.
In comparing Athenian and American democracy, they are very different however some aspects are the same. The similarities include citizens were allowed to vote for their leader(s). However, the definition of a citizen is completely different now that it was then. A citizen back then was a male landowner in Athens, on the other hand, citizens now days are people that are born within the country or have parents
Today, much of the world’s governments have converted to democracies. In the Ancient World, there was only one truly notable example of a democratic society: The City-State of Athens. This is actually the birthplace of democracy, where instead of the rich or powerful ruling, it was the citizens of the city-state that held the power. This advanced way of government was so effective and well structured, it even laid the foundations for the development of our own democracy, right here in the United States, over 2,000 years in the future. Prior to Athens’s collapse during the Peloponnesian War, it truly had an efficient and very organized system of government.
To begin with, both of their ways that they chose the officials were similar but also differed. The Athenian Government and the Roman Republic both had the citizens of each side choose the officials, but they both had a difference in limitations on how they chose the officials. In Athens, the citizens would vote for the officials, but the people who were official citizens were the ones who were 18 or over, born in Athens, and had to be males. This means that outsiders, slaves, or women could not vote because they were not considered citizens. Additionally, the Athenian Government system for voting was organized with citizens by the name of demes or demos; who belonged to tribes and where combined with others of the same area to make a larger group, which in turn were combined to form ten tribes. (Gill, thoughtco 2017). In contrast, citizens of Rome had to be over 15 years old, male slaves could also vote if they were granted freedom, the women were considered citizens but had no voting rights. The
During the times of Ancient Greece, two major forms of government existed, democracy and oligarchy. The city-states of Athens and Sparta are the best representatives of democracy and oligarchy, respectively. The focus of the times was directed towards military capabilities, while the Athenians were more interested in comfort and culture. It was the oligarchy in Sparta that put a war-like attitude as its first priority and best met the needs of Ancient Greece. These factors empowered Sparta and led to the development of an authoritative and potent state. Other contrasting issues included women’s rights, social classes, and value of human life.
Athens had a better government in my opinion. I think Athens had a better government because they created a democracy. According to the Athens and Sparta Document Set, a democracy means “rule by the people”. The Athens also got to abolish politicians they did not like. Athens also had ten generals, meanwhile, Sparta has two kings. In my opinion, I think that having ten generals is better than two kings because they understand you more. Sadly not all Ancient Athens were citizens, but if a free male would be a citizen if his father was a citizen of Athens. Later on, they changed that law, it was then bothering the father and mother had to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen. Sadly the women didn’t get that many rights but they soon they got more status. The Athens also made it to where not only the wealthy can engage in the jury service. In the Athens, you have to be an 18-year-old man to complete military training. On the other hand, in Sparta, you have to be a 30-year-old to complete military training. Basically, I’m trying to say that the Athens had a better
Rome is a better system than athens because they are more organized they have a little bit more freedom and the education is better. There's better government they have better rights and there's more citizen ship you also don't need as much as athen..
For Polybius the advantage of the roman republic over Athenian democracy was that, successively more people shared power as a safeguard against abuse until the immorality of democracy again led to conditions favorable for the receiving of the "Fuehrerpinzip." In his plan, there successively occur three "good" forms of government – kingship, aristocracy, and democracy – only for each to succumb to corruption and for its resulting understanding in its distorted form – respectively dictatorship, oligarchy, and adhocracy, or mob rule – to be overthrown by the kind phase of the next. Polybius also tells us that the senate puts forth its control largely because it has the power to carry out investigations of capital crimes and to offer ultimate negotiation in civil disagreement. There are no rights prior to the state Mixed government implies checks & balances (Polybius, Roman Republic), which implies the good of the entire community.
For example in Rome They allowed everyone to become a citizen as long as you were not a slave but you could obtain a citizenship if you were the son of a freed slave, free slaves could not become citizens .The only requirements were that your parents had to be married in certain areas amongst the Roman Empire, You had limited rights but could own land but could not participate in voting and government office jobs. In Athens if you wanted to become a citizen you could not be a Free, native-born male child, Free, native-born adult female. Female children, slaves, freed slaves, and sons of freed slaves could not become
People in authority tend to disregard those who and that which does not benefit them, since the poor did not seem to benefit anybody, people in authority found them useless. For instance, Emperor Charles V wrote an imperial decree for the Netherlands in 1531, where he stated that alms should not be given freely to the Europeans living in poverty, in doing so not only does he believe they will fall into idleness but he thinks they will take advantage of this and live their lives based off of alms, and that it will soon lead to all evils (document 2). He states that “beggars and their children will abandon their trade or occupation for a wicked and contemptible life… above all those who are poor and sick, and other indigents unable to earn
Overcrowded, smoggy, dirty. These word would describe what the gilded age and progressive era looked like. With multiple families living in a small space and people working for less than living wage in dirty cramped factories. Food was made in unsanitary places with rats crawling over it. There were millions of child labour. Some people would say that the inventions society got were great but it was at the cost of people's lives. Economic growth was bad for society because factories had harsh condition.
foreign policy during the period of 1945-1963 in combating Communist aggression in Europe and Asia? Use the Documents and your knowledge of the period to construct your response.
With the growth of cities and factories, citizens began to see unsafe and filthy conditions that progressives tackled to change. Muckrakers, journalists who exposed both government and corporations for their corruption, caused the most waves in change regarding consumer protection. Although at times the pieces by muckrakers were exaggerated, they were able to generate public awareness on issues that would have otherwise been swept under the carpet. One of the most notable pieces was “The Jungle, “by Upton Sinclair. Although he had originally wanted to expose the harsh conditions faced by immigrants throughout industrialized parts of America, he inadvertently exposed the meat industry for their unsanitary practices. Upton Sinclair made the public very aware of what is actually in their meat.
The beginning settlements of the Massachusetts and Virginia colonies were both brought together by the similar groups of people, however their different beginnings as a colony, views on religion, and means of economic stability created two different political and economic systems.
Athens and Sparta were two powerful city-states, different from each other where Athenian democracy focused on economic advancement, while Sparta oligarchy focused on military force. Democracy is a system of government where citizens have the right to vote, whereas oligarchy is a system of government where only a group of people is in control and only their opinion or decision that were taken into consideration. Leading to the thesis statement that people are better served by Athenian democracy than the Spartan oligarchy, supported in three evidence points. Firstly, Athenian democracy allowed citizens participation in government that gave them freedom to vote and take part in legislation. Secondly, the Athenian government provided Athenian men better education, by being taught how to read and write to reach their academic advancement. Lastly, the Athenian democracy’s contribution to Athens military advancement that protected its citizens.
