Language plays an essential role in the development and unification of a culture or nation. American Sign Language (ASL) is a combination of expressions, movements, and gestures that enable the Deaf Community to communicate with one another. ASL is a visual language and without having any words spoken, thousands of ideas and emotions could be expressed. Two films that help convey the significance of ASL are Beyond Silence and Love is Never Silent. These works revolve around the lives of Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) and the struggles that they have encountered by being born into deaf families. This movie revolves around Lara, a girl who has a passion for music, and aspires to be a great clarinet player. However, Lara is born into a deaf household and her father, Martin, ultimately rejects her playing music and one may find this upsetting because he does not support his daughter. In this film, Lara is given a tremendous amount of responsibility when she is just a child, and because of this often felt that she had to take care of everyone in her house. In the beginning of the film, Lara needed to go to school and learn. However, instead of focusing on learning to read, Lara frequently had to leave school early to help her parents communicate with those around them. This part is bothersome because Lara had to sacrifice her education in order to help her parents. Additionally, Lara has difficult relationship with her father, who wishes that she would stop playing music and become more involved in the Deaf Community. Their relationship extremely interesting throughout the movie, due to the fact that they let music get in the way of their bond. With that being said, Lara leaves home and goes to stay with her Aunt Clarissa in order to become a more prominent musician, and this annoying because she barely even tells her parents that she intends
