Pioneers of Computer Programming
When you think of 21st century computing, two things come to mind: Windows and video games. Learning Team A introduces you to the two men responsible for these phenomena Bill Gates and Nolan Bushnell.
William Henry Gates III
During that late 1960's and early 1970's, BASIC was one of the premier programming languages. At that time, Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen made the commitment to learn BASIC by reading the user manuals. In exchange for computer time, they made an agreement with a local company called the Computer Center Corporation to provide de-bugging services for software on the company's DEC machine. This time was used not only to search for errors, but also to study the operating

After seeing the magazine article, Gates contacted Ed Roberts of the MITS Company and proposed to that he write some BASIC software for the Altair. The MITS personnel were impressed with the initial work that Gates and his friends had completed and decided to meet with them to test the team's code. After a successful demonstration of the code, Gates made the decision to leave school and move to Albuquerque and work with MITS on the Altair.
After the move Gates would devote his energies to Microsoft, a company that he would establish in 1975 with Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Microsoft would sell its BASIC system to MITS, NCR and Intel. It proved to be more cost effective for companies to buy Microsoft software rather than spend the time and money to develop their own.
In January of 1979, Gates made the decision to move Microsoft to Seattle, Washington. Gates believed that part of the country was better suited for recruiting programmers. Microsoft adopted a new standard for hiring employees; the company decided to hire only the most gifted and intelligent new college graduates rather than experienced programmers. The company was looking for talent that came with no previous programming biases. The expansions of personnel would lead to the development of a
Microsoft has grown into an enormous and powerful corporation by a combination of aggressive business practices and having written operating systems (DOS and Windows) for personal computers. From operating systems it branched out into other software which has, along with the operating system, become something of an industry standard.
Microsoft started from extreme curiosity of two youthful boys who visited school together, Bill Gates and Paul Allen. may be the one most noted for Microsoft, however it works out that you will find two males who introduced us this empire software corporation. Gates’ curiosity was sparked in school with a teletype, a pc like machine employed for communication. This is where him and Allen met and grew to become buddies. The 2 would later end up being the entrepreneurs of
William Gates III was born in Seattle, Washington in 1955. When he was thirteen, he wrote his first software program, which enabled him and his friends to play tic-tac-toe. While Gates was attending Harvard, his best friend Paul Allen showed him the newest electronic hardware system in Popular Electronics magazine. A man named Ed Roberts had invented the
Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Gates' foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. Under Gates' leadership, Microsoft's mission has been to continually advance and improve software technology, and to make it easier, more cost-effective and more enjoyable for people to use computers. The company is committed to a long-term view, reflected in its industry-leading investment in research and development each year (Microsoft, 2011).
When Microsoft transitioned to providing its customers with an innovative idea, Bill Gates was instrumental
Gates entered Harvard University in 1973 and pursued his studies for the next year and a half. However, his life changed in January 1975 when Popular Mechanics carried a cover story on a $350 microcomputer, the Altair, made by a firm called MITS in New Mexico. When Allen showed him the story, Gates knew where he wanted to be: at the forefront of
His parents were Jewish and both were librarians. He attended the Lakeside Preparatory School when he was 14 years old, and there he met Bill Gates who was 2 years his junior. The boys became good friends and shared their passion for computers. Paul was a bright student and scored a 1600 on his SATS. He was accepted to Washington State University. However, after the second year, he decided to drop out of college and accepted a job offer at Honeywell in Boston, Massachusetts (Paul Allen, The Biography.com website, 2016). Shortly after arriving in Boston, Paul contacted Bill and together they decided to offer MITS, the makers of the Altair, their programming services. They wrote a new program in BASICS which MITS agreed to distribute and market under the name Altair Basic. Hence, their partnership led to the formation of Microsoft. They founded the company on November 26, 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico (Bellis,
Microsoft Corporation was founded by William H. Gates III also known as Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen in 1975. Since their inception they have been credited for developing various operating systems to coordinate with the personal computer (PC). “Microsoft possesses a dominant, persistent, and increasing share of the world- wide market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems. Every year for the last decade, Microsoft 's share of the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems has stood above ninety percent. For the last couple of years the figure has been at least ninety-five percent, and analysts project that the share will climb even higher over the next few years (Justice).” Microsoft has also
In 1975, Allen and Gates started marketing a BASIC programming language translator with their newly founded company Microsoft (“Paul Allen” Famous entrepreneurs). Soon, through deals with other emerging companies such as Apple and Commodore, Allen had arranged for their company to purchase an operating system called Q-DOS for $50,000 (“Paul Allen” Biography). The duo reinvented the operating system and renamed it MS-DOS the gave exclusive rights of MS-DOS to a personal computer company called IBM, who had originally commissioned the OS.
Gates graduated from Lakeside School in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and subsequently enrolled at Harvard College in the fall of 1973. While at Harvard, he met his future business partner, Steve Ballmer, whom he later appointed as CEO of Microsoft. He also met computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou at Harvard, with whom he collaborated on a paper about algorithms. He did not have a definite study plan while a student at Harvard and spent a lot of time using the school 's computers. He remained in contact with Paul Allen, his school friend, joining him at Honeywell during the summer of 1974. The following year saw the release of the MITS Altair 8800 based on the Intel 8080 CPU, and Gates and Allen saw this as the opportunity to start their own computer software company. He had talked this decision over with his parents, who were supportive of him after seeing how much Gates wanted to start a company.
The beginning of Microsoft Inc. started with Bill Gates and Paul Allen writing computer program code for local businesses and municipalities. In 1975 they were inspired by an issue of Popular Electronics that showed the new Altair microcomputer kit, manufactured by MITS Computer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen wrote a version of BASIC, a computer programming language, for the machine. Later that year Bill Gates left Harvard University to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Paul Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Paul Allen took a position as director of software development. Bill Gates and Paul Allen named their partnership Micro-soft (Microsoft
Microsoft Corporation is a multinational company based in Redmond Washington. The company manufactures computer products and offer computer services. The company also licenses and supports various types of computer products and services. Microsoft Corporation was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company is the largest software manufacturer globally in terms of revenue. It is also the most valuable organization in the world. Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded the company to manufacture basic interpreters for Altair 8800 and sell them. The company was the leader in the personal computer operating market in mid 1980s with MS DOS. The development of the Microsoft windows operating system gave the organization a
The idea came from a magazine entitled, Popular Electronics, the plan was to make a basic language implementation for the program Altair 8800 which was created by MITS it efforts to eventually score a contract to where they would have breathing room to make more and better programs. The plan worked perfectly, as Allen flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico presented their work and won the contract. They both packed up and moved to New Mexico. There, they started Microsoft and at the end of 1973 revenues from their company totaled over $16,000. Microsoft wasn't a complete success yet though, with competition in literally every corner of the planet they had a lot of work to do before they could become the face of personal computing.
In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen created a company called Microsoft. More than thirty years later, Microsoft is a leader in the field of computer programming. Gates and Allen both had big plans for their company and came up with different ways of managing people and products
They introduced Microsoft office 1.0, visual basic, windows NT, Windows 95, Internet explorer, Office 97, MSN Gaming Zone, Change of leadership from Bill Gates to Steve Ballmer, windows 2000, windows vista, office 2007, windows server 2008 and visual studio 2008 and now its latest product windows 7. At each stage Microsoft began anticipating market needs and behaviors by analyzing business and end user processes, challenges and problems of end user and programming problems by developing a improved but not a perfect product that attempted to ease some of the difficulties of computing until such a point where customers begin anticipating the new product will replace the previous one with improved and salient features that make the experience of computing an enjoyable one. The magnitude of the changes were magnificent such as that in 1978 a small company was able to exceed $1 million sales mark, IN 1983 OVER 100 MILLION MICE WERE SOLD, the IPO price for its shares was $21.00 per share, 1 million sales of windows NT in 4 days, 10 million plus MSN gaming members and so on.
