Biography of Richard Lovelace

He was born in Somerset, England where he began his studies at Westminster School and later attended Oxford University in 1652. He acquired his bachelors and masters in Latin, Greek, and philosophy (Hallman 252). Locke, an empiricist, believed that knowledge came only through the senses and from experience. An example of experience through Locke’s view was the notion that the older people became, the more experience they gained. Robinson does a great job of utilizing various literary devices to convey this knowledge and enhance the pleasure of the reading. Although Robinson begins the poem positive, describing the admiration for the gentleman, he ends the poem with his death. This poem is one of Robinson’s most famous poems that he had created. Robinson was an American poet who attended Harvard and now is remembered for his dramatic short poems. Robinson’s attitude in “Richard Cory” was seen through his diction, imagery, ethos, etc. Robinson incorporates many details that contribute to the tragic irony at the end.

For many centuries now poetry has always been an important part of the English language. From the old poets such as Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe and Emily Dickson to the many newly discovered poetry. Poetry has become an art that has become so diverse; that poets, even though they spend their entire life studying it, still have a lot to learn from it. Some poets even continue to learn from it till their last days. Although there are many different types of poetry I will focus on one of the many great poems written in 1897 by Edwin Arlington Robinson; “Richard Cory”. This short sixteen lined story tells us a lot about the human irony that constantly surrounds us, the power of being admired and envied at the same time. Richard Cory is a wealthy man who at the same time was admired and envied by those surrounding him. He had it all, the money, the power, and the people bowing down at his feet; however, -Spoiler Alert- by the end of the poem he unexpectedly commits suicide because of the pressure of always being so perfect; showing us that not everything is what it seems to be.

Poetry can take many forms and shapes based on the authors personal experiences. These different styles can also be interpreted in many different ways based on the reader’s view of the poem. John Donne and Tony Harrison both discuss death in their poems. They were written in different eras and both poems have different views on this subject. John Donne had a rather privileged upbringing as he was born into a prosperous family and studied law at Oxbridge. Tony Harrison on the other hand was born into a proud working class family in Leeds. Harrison’s poem is completely opposite to Donne’s as it tells the reader about his personal life and the unfortunate passing of his Mother.
