Biomechanics That Causes Ball To Spin

Satisfactory Essays

In an article published in 2013 about the biomechanics of kicking, researchers analyzed the movement of soccer players using high speed video. The results showed that if the balled is kicked in line with the ball’s center of gravity by the instep of the foot, the ball goes off in a straight line. When the ball is struck with the front of the foot at a specific angle between the leg and foot of approximately 90 degrees it will curve in flight. The kick is off center however. This is the torque effect of the impact mentioned earlier that causes the ball to spin. For the spin to occur the ball cannot be kicked too close or too far from its center of gravity. And even if there is no friction, the ball will still spin once it is kicked off center.
