Blaming the Media for the Worldwide Increase in Violence
The mass media are an increasingly accessible way for people to learn what is important in the world today and what is acceptable behaviour in this society. Media outlets include film, radio, print, music and so on; film being the most widely used medium. The media which is prevalent in every aspect of our lives, is the perfect instrument to instil ideas in the minds of the people, and the most susceptible of them all, children. During the past decade, there is an alarming increase in violence, especially among the youth. A study found that between 1993 and 2001, incidents of physical violence reported increased by more than 300 per cent.

The 80’s saw the evolution of Gangsta Rap, a subcategory of the music genre, Rap. Gangsta Rappers spit profanities, demean women and pay homage to weapons. In this way, violence is glamorised and glorified. Fans of Gangsta Rap music find themselves starting to dress like their idols, carrying “bling-blings” and wearing clothes that fit two, using the rappers’ slangs (like calling jewelleries “bling-blings”), so it is not surprising if these fans start idolizing their lifestyles too and take weapons to be a proof of their power and influence. Hence, students start bringing guns to school, citing it as a form of “self-defence”. Some have weapons as a form of indicator of power to instil fear among others not to get in their way, and the fact that they are carrying these weapons, if something actually happens that anger them, their first instinct would be to use it. In this case, the entertainment media, in the form of music, is a propaganda for violence and weapons, making the using of the latter as an act that’s “cool” and respectable.
The increase of violence in popular entertainment slowly but surely makes it more a norm than ever. When the media inflate the presence of violence, viewers are likely to develop the “mean world” syndrome, a cynical view of the
THESIS STATEMENT: The world’s media today seem to have more violence than ever. Video games have vivid depictions of accident catastrophes, fighting and murder. Television news programs generally lead with a violent story in order to gain an audience. This is free society people can stay what they want. ‘’ Media violence has many negative effect on youth today to commit crimes in society.’’
Like many musical genre before rap, some people believe that rap music influenced teenagers in a negative way that could lead to violence. Some criminals have blamed movies, books, and music as inspiration for their crimes. However, one cannot solely rely on these sources as the main reason for any act whether good or bad. “Millions of heavy metal and gangsta rap fans spend hours with their chosen music genres and never threaten others or themselves. Moreover, most researchers concerned with the causes of suicide and violence point to a broad array of risk factors unrelated to popular culture (e.g., depression, access to guns, substance abuse, etc.) that seem to be precursors of such
In fairy tales, children are pushed into ovens, have their hands chopped off, are forced to sleep in coal bins, and must contend with wolves who've eaten their grandmother. In myths, rape, incest, all manner of gruesome bloodshed, child abandonment, and total debauchery are standard fare. We see more of the same in Bible stories, accentuated with dire predictions of terrors and abominations in an end of the world apocalypse that is more horrifying than the human imagination can even grasp.
In rap music it’s not hard to find the violent lyrics with most of the music speaks about gang violence, shootings, drugs, and more. An example of a song that influences violence is J. Coles song “A Tale of 2 Cities” with lyrics like “Picked up the paper and they say my nigga Eddie caught a body, I'm convinced anybody is a killer, all you gotta do is push 'em to the limps” in this part of the song Cole speaks about how his friend, who isn’t really a person who would commit a crime, murdered somebody; Cole isn’t surprised because he believes everybody is a killer if you push them to their limits. Another example in the song is “They robbin' niggas on the daily can you blame a nigga that ain't never had things? Guess not last night they pulled up on my nigga at the light like ugh, nice watch, run it” the first part of these lyrics Cole justifies the crime of robbing because they have nothing. In the second part Cole states that somebody came up to his friend and robbed him of his watch, on this part the sound of a gun being cocked in the background is heard and is continued with the chorus saying “hands in the air now” (Genius). These lyrics not only promote violence but justify why it was okay to do such crimes. The reasoning behind why artists talk about violence is that it’s a way of telling their story. Namir, a rapper in New York says “People have to realize that rappers are just like any other artist or musician. What makes an artist an artist is his artistic portrayal of his life and how he expresses his life through whatever art form that he does” (PBS). With people growing up in terrible environments and music being a way for them to cope the reasoning for the violent lyrics is the artist trying tell their
In the media there is a great deal of violence and nobody can really deny that. However, the effects media has on children and young adults have been debated for years. Whether it is a body found along the road, a school shooting, or planes flying into the World Trade Center, the images will be replayed over and over on Television ad nausea.. The most horrific acts may eventually be retold in books and movies. Packaging and selling the violence of the moment belongs to television - and television will keep reminding us of it.
Another school shooting goes down and is preyed upon by the media for a gripping new story. Jonesboro, Arkansas, West Paducah, Kentucky, and Littleton, Colorado all have one thing in common. All these places are sites where school shootings have occurred. Why do school shootings happen and who is to blame when they do happen?. These are two questions that are still trying to be answered. Some people say that school shootings are due to the excess marketing of violence in movies, television, video games, and music. "'There is a difference between what one has the right to do and what is socially responsible', he says. It appears that they have targeted a mass audience for this material, and then they're
Many people still have several questions they want answered, such as, is media violence actually affecting children or are children already prone to violence drawn to media violence? Some experts have shown short and long-term negative effects occur in children from watching violent media; however another group of experts have shown that media violence is only one of many risk factors leading to aggression developed in children. These two groups need to continue more research and go beyond that to find true solutions. Nevertheless, no sources were found to say that media violence has no influence on the increase in modern culture’s violent actions. The key to discovering the true correlation between violence in children and media violence is to continue research until a solution is
Media violence is one of the most debated public issues society faces today. Television screens are loaded with the glamorization of weapon carrying. Violence constitute as amusing and trivialized. Needless portrayals of interpersonal violence spread across the television screens like wild fire. Televisions spew the disturbing events such as children being assaulted, husbands inflicting domestic abuse on their wives and children succumbing to abuse by their parents. Scenes of betrayal, anguish, infiltrate the television screen. Unfortunately, a child becomes subjected to media violence. Violence in the media has become an overlying and controversial issue. On one hand, some people feel that Hollywood is becoming excessive with violence and should tone it down or remove it altogether due to the newfound correlation between fantasy violence and behavioral issues. Others note that movie producers shouldn't be held to blame for the issues of unsupervised kids and that aggressive tendencies cannot be simplified to a simple cause and effect relationship. Both authors of the passage work on each others' claims by arguing and correcting their proposals. For example, the second author uses a firsthand experience in order to protect her claims while the first author regards this as "flawed reasoning when it comes to violence in Hollywood
As I sat in Alexander Hall at Invitation to Excellence, I looked around at the faces as the segment from The Dark Night played. I was struck by the faces of the students in the room—some were amused to an extent and the others were nearly expressionless—as they watched Batman pound The Joker’s head onto a table. The thought “how has the gore of movies desensitized our culture to the violence around them?” ran through my mind as I watched the students, products of our culture’s repugnant media.
The Media of today is so open to violence that it’s almost impossible to avoid. Through movies, Violence is another issue that needs to be censored in the media. It is exposed through music’s, with lyrics that refer to violent mental pictures of rape, sex, and money. In Movies, violence is shown through scenes where people are getting their head cut off, using of guns and knives, and violence against woman. The problem is that many of us look into these exposures has influences and role models, which is why we emulate them and as a result, breeding violence against ourselves. Many rap music show today are simply about drugs, jail, woman and killing, and because teenagers look up to them, it’s inevitable that they will soon practice life expressed through the lyrics. But violence is nearly impossible to get rid of. Just by watching the news, you can see and hear about violence that occurs every day. So, until society is peaceful, violence will not be off of
In today’s world, there is an endless amount of information available to people everywhere around the globe. Mass media is definitely shaping our world, whether it is in a positive way or a negative way. Television and the radio waves provide us with hours of entertainment. This analysis provides firm research on the subject from the opposing and supporting sources, giving a thorough definition to the term “violent media” and brings forth evidence that other psychological effects and environmental factors are more significant causes of increased youth aggression than violent media.
In the book Critique of Violence ,author Walter describes Violence as "The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, male development, or deprivation .The violence that is portrayed in the media has been debated for decades ,and it has rose a question about how does it influence the youth?.
