As people, we understand the world through our own perspective. When people do not quite understand, or do not want to, they often misunderstand situations and other people. Humans tend to label each other as one thing when they can be something else completely. In Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, Narciso is misunderstood as just a town drunk when he really is a hero. Lupito has just killed the town sheriff, and all the men are out for his blood. They are searching the bridge and the bushes looking for him when Narciso comes down and tries to calm everyone down. He shouts at the the group of men: “Let us act like men! That is not an animal down there, that is a man. Lupito. You all know Lupito. You know that the war has made him sick-,” …show more content…
After Tenorio was defeated when he tried to accuse Ultima of being a witch, he harbors a more intensive hatred for Ultima. Narciso and Tenorio are drinking at the same bar, and they get into a fight. When Tenorio and Narciso are separated he swears that he is going to kill Ultima, and then drives away in his truck. Andrew does not heed Narciso’s urge to go home and warn them, so he takes it upon himself to go through the hazardous blizzard to save Ultima’s life once again. In the middle of the blizzard, Tenorio confronts Narciso with a gun. Narciso is seen claiming: “Ay diablo, you have shot me in cowardly fashion”(Anaya 168). He dies the death of a martyr, taking the shot through his body while trying to protect Ultima. However, the town will never know this because the police rule it as an accident, and “Because Narciso was the town drunk, nobody cared much” (Anaya 177). He was killed in the cold blood of hatred, but no one knows because the fate of a town drunk is beneath them. Narciso’s heroism is clouded by his reputation of being the town inebriate. When everyone wants to kill one of their friends, he is there to protect the life of a friend, but they pay no heed because he is just the town drunk. When he runs all the way from town to warn Grande, he is proclaimed as intoxicated in his haste to get the warning out of his mouth. Even his death is clouded as an accident because he was a known alcoholic when his death meant holding off evil for a little

Our actions and interactions with others and society are what define us. Society’s perception of an individual may contrast with that individual’s perception of self. Our actions and interactions with others create certain stigmas which may not change despite progression and change an individual has undergone. But however at the end of the day we are our own creators and we chose who we interact with.
Deadly Unna? (1998), is a book based on a true story that tells the tale of non-Indigenous boy Gary ‘Blacky’ Black and his friendship with Dumby Red. Set in Port Victoria in South Australia, Blacky’s evolving relationships with the Indigenous kids in the community inspires him to question the underlying racism that exists in society. In this essay, the author’s methods for conveying the theme of belonging to the reader will be evaluated. Subsequently, Gwynne’s generation of racial segregation in the community, followed by the contrasting types of racism demonstrated by the characters, will be analysed.
In the book, Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio witnesses four deaths when all is said and done,
Narciso and Antonio do not have many direct encounters in the novel, yet Narciso has a profound effect on Antonio’s religious maturation. Narciso, who is considered the town drunk, is present in many important conflicts as a mediator figure. He goes to great lengths to help his friends, which is shown when he attempts to convince the townsmen not to rashly kill Lupito after he had shot the sheriff. Once Lupito is killed Antonio worries about the fate of the men on the bridge who shot him, including his own father. Antonio wonders "Did God listen? Would he hear? Had he seen my father on the bridge? And where was Lupito 's soul winging to, or was it washing down the
The men got revenge and killed Lupito. Shouting from across the bridge, Lupito in a way asked to be killed. Lupito felt guilt and shame for his actions. Lupito knew that it was morally wrong to murder someone because it was against his religious views. Death is a sin only God himself shall practice. He said things to strike them, said things that would hurt them. He brought his death upon himself.
There was someone other than Tony who also was close to Ultima, Narciso a local town drunk. He was always looking out for Ultima and defending her from Tenorio who wanted to kill her. On the night of his death there was a snowstorm taking place and he was just trying to get to Ultima to warn her about Tenorio, who wanted to go out and kill her for the death of his daughters, Narciso didn 't know but Antonio was following him on his journey to get to Ultima. Narciso tried to get Andrew to go tell Ultima because he believed he could get to her faster but he wasn 't leaving Rosie’s house. “Confess me—” (Anaya 170) Narciso asking him to do this challenged Tony and God and the fact that he is being asked to do more than he is actually capable of is present once again. He as a kid and not a priest makes him not “allowed” to confess other people but he did so regardless, once again having him question God’s capabilities. “you’re only a kid—I’m just sorry.” (Anaya 178) The fact of a good person dying without justifiable reason is questioned by Tony, and why wasn 't justice brought for Tenorio’s actions; Andrew not listening to Narciso was also questioned by Antonio, due to the fact that
For a 12-year-old Cuban boy living in the Bronx, baseball is his family's only way out and means a better tomorrow. In the novel, Heat by Mike Lupica, baseball represents a way out and a better tomorrow. He loves baseball and idolizes the Yankees pitcher El Grande, who was also Cuban-born. Michael Arroyo is a young boy who has reasons to distrust the representatives of the state must figure out how to continue life on his own terms while navigating the adult world and avoiding both the well-meaning and the badly-intentioned interference of grown-ups. Michael is also the best baseball pitcher on his South Bronx all-star team. Michael's arm is so good, that a rival Little League coach begins requesting proof that he's only 12 and eligible to play. They ask for his father but, recently, his father took a trip to Florida and had a heart attack, killing him. In contrast to Ultima, Tenorio is often regarded as evil without the need for much thought. After murdering Narciso, Tenorio did not receive a kind penalty for his actions. The townspeople simply dismissed Narciso’s death because he “was the town drunk” so he “had died during one of his drinks” (Anaya 177). Due to this character, Antonio realized that life is not always fair. From Antonio’s perspective, Tenorio did not deserve forgiveness for killing Narciso. Antonio became biased for obvious reasons; however, he overlooked the justification for Tenorio’s forgiveness. Like Narciso, the deaths of Tenorio’s daughters were left unpunished. Tenorio was also described as “an evil man” by Antonio’s mother before his character was properly introduced (Anaya 89). Despite labeling him that, an explanation for why he is evil is never provided by her. Tenorio was called evil, but for what reasons? Is it just simply because he is in a family of witches? While his actions can register as wicked, his intentions for revenge against Ultima are regarded as good. Ultima was responsible for why “Tenorio’s daughter died” because of “Ultima’s
In the very beginning of the book Lupito, a war veteran, returns to New Mexico from WWII. He, like many other soldiers, has serious mental issues caused by the firsthand experience of the war. While it may have appeared that he was alright, the lucidity was only surface deep. He had a severe case of PTSD and had delusions. One night, he had an delusional episode and killed the town sheriff. When the townspeople learned of the murder, they set out for vengeance. Soon after, the townspeople and Antonio’s father Gabriel, had set out to kill Lupito. Antonio was nearby the riot, and sees the slaughter firsthand. Lupito is shot several times and dies right in front of Antonio, a young boy at the time.
Dreams have a very strange way of showing us a perception of reality that we ourselves cannot see. They are based on what goes on in our mind and can sometimes show us the truth that we are hiding from ourselves. They can expand our thoughts to a multitude of different subjects and force us to be a slave to our dreams, such as facing parental pressure, religious ambivalence and the loss of one's innocence. This is true of Antonio Marez in the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. Antonio has lost control and begins to succumb to his dreams and loses control of himself. Akeelah works hard to achieve her personal legend and her whole world conspires to help make that happen. There are many points in the movie that showcases her stepping towards her legend without her knowing she is. The first point that I noticed was her seeing a spelling bee T.V. show while there was a spelling bee going on at her school. Those are "omens," small hints in her life that made her think about what she wants to do or what her personal legend is. As she was watching the show, she heard a word which was called brunneous, and she didn't know what meant. Each new word she listens or learns, she wrote it down in her diary and tried to memorize them. She had a natural talent for doing so. Expanding her vocabulary which was practice for the spelling bee, but she didn't know that then. Akeelah hits a wall where Dr. Larabee kicked her out due to her disrespect and attitude. Her being kicked out made her furious, she wanted to prove to Dr. Larabee that she didn't need his assistance to help her win the provincial spelling bee. This was the first step Akeelah took by herself towards her personal legend and also knowing why she was doing it. During the provincial spelling bee, Akeelah got a word wrong due to the lack of coaching, but her whole world wanted her to make top 10 to get to nationals. Her sister Kiana catches the last boy's mother telling him the spelling, and he got disqualified. This omen gets her in the top 10 spots. It didn't happen by accident, the boy got

Later in the novel, news arrives that Tenorio’s daughter has died. Narciso had told everyone in the Márez home that Tenorio and a mob were on their way to see Ultima, as they have claimed to have found Ultima’s herbal pouch under the daughter’s bed.
