“Legacy is not what’s left tomorrow when you’re gone. It’s what you give, create, impact and contribute today,” (Ogunlaru). “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a story that gives the reader something to think about. It's a sad story that shows the bittersweet nature of death and the fragile consistency of life. The people who live around us impact our lives and leave us with their legacy in our hearts even after they are gone. Hurst uses both, literary elements and symbolism to convey a regretful tone.
Determination is a key part of life because it can get you through tough situations. It is easy to give up in hardships, but determination is so much more important. In NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, readers realize that though they may be in a tough situation, determination can get them through it and achieve your goals.
These theme for my book are very good themes about the book. The themes help the reader know what the book is about. The characters in the book are important to the book because with out the characters the book would make no sense. Every book must have characters and themes to the book because without those two things there is no book. The three theme from the book talk very good about the book. They describe what Brian has to go through in order to survive the cold winter in the canadian wilderness. One theme tells us how lonely it is in the wilderness and how lonely Brian is and how he has no one to talk to but a skunk. So those are some of my theme and characters of my story brian’s winter.
The American Civil War is one of the most impactful course of events in American History due to the massive violence, inadequate medical care, and destruction of the southern landscape. The war, which last from 1861-1865, resulted in over 625,000 casualties on the battlefield and a large unknown number of civilian and slave deaths. Due to the horrifying conditions of battle and of grossly understaffed and unequipped field hospitals, many soldiers deserted their positions and attempted to return home; such is the story of a confederate soldier named Inman in the novel Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. The Civil War also massively impacted the nations African-American populations as slaves were now free, however,
Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship. This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel Lesson before Dying, Doll’s House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent.
Throughout the book Dharma Bums, by Jack Kerouac, the characters resist the urge to normalize their peculiar behavior. This particular idea of nonconformity is present throughout the entirety of the book. The ultimate source of uniformity, to which Japhy Ryder and Ray Smith are definitely opposed to, is the middle class. The majority of the American population, who are trapped in the "rat race" of money-making and social climbing, rely on these social norms to create class distinction. Kerouac delivers the overall theme that obedience of societal norms is aberrant.
In past years, as well as, in the twenty-first century, African Americans are being oppressed and judged based on the color of their skin. In, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, this is the primary conflict that plagues Jefferson’s as well as Grant’s everyday life. By pleading guilty to a murder that he did not commit, Jefferson has to choose to die just as he is, a hog in the white’s eyes, or die a man. On the other hand, Grant, who is his teacher, is faced with being looked down upon by his community all because of his race and status. He is graced with the challenge of turning Jefferson into a man before his execution date. It is only a matter of time before they both realize that they cannot change the past and they have

What makes a seemingly normal book a classic? Literary lenses. One of those classic books, Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds, shows the reader justice, difficult choices, and allows the reader to discover how it uses literary lenses to become a classic. By studying the novel through various literary lenses, the reader can see different perspectives which is important because it brings more depth and dimension, making Shiloh a children’s classic.
For millions of immigrants, America has been seen as the land of opportunity where anyone could become anything he or she wanted to be. A family that believes strongly in the American dream can be found in Amy Tan’s short story, “Two Kinds.” The story centers around the daughter of a Chinese immigrant who desperately wants her daughter to become successful. In the story, the author shows the difficult lives immigrants face when moving to a new culture. In this short story, the theme shows the protagonist’s conflict with her mother on the type of daughter her mother wants her to be. The author establishes the theme of how difficult mother-daughter relationships can be through characterization, setting, and symbolism.
Lamott explains that the “child you” is meant to coax out that spark for an extraordinary piece of writing that may have been overlooked by using a more mature, adult approach. Lamott personalizes the infamous fear of the “first draft” by describing her experience as a food review writer for California magazine. Even years after she first took the position, she suffered the same panic each time she was requested to write a new review. Stressed out she would write a sentence or two, mark it out, try again, distract herself with other tasks for a time, then sit back at her desk and stare at the same picture frame. By the time Lamott got to the picture frame stage, she always ended up with the same epiphany, to write a “Shitty First Draft” that no eyes but hers would see. By allowing us amateur writers into her realm, and allowing us to understand that she shares our struggles even at the professional level, Lamott solidifies the credibility of this piece and the importance of the “Shitty First Draft”. Lamott wrote Shitty First Drafts within her book about writing to inform young or inexperienced writers in a funky, warm way that no one spins a perfect piece of writing in one

On the other hand, there are chemicals and drugs that pregnant women should avoid when they are trying to produce offspring and begin a family. These include drugs and certain chemicals/medications. There are certain drugs that are given to pregnant women to reduce the pain after and during labor. They include Terbutaline, which are used to stop premature labor, and Valproic which is used to stop seizures. But also, there are some mood stabilizers that affect a female's health which can increase the risk of autism in their offspring (“Autism Speaks”). Even though pregnant women do not want to experience the horrifying pain during labor, the medicines given to them may have a long term affect on their children. The main goal for females about to have children is to make sure their health records are up to date. Secondly, they do not want to be exposed or an excessive amount of folic acid or use the vitamin B12 during pregnancy, since it can increase the risk of autism in the wound (Gaby 112). There are plenty other vitamins that are sold or prescribed that do not have folic acid and do the same job as a Vitamin B12. All of the drugs given to pregnant women and chemicals that they are exposed to can be avoided or the medicines can be taken in a more natural form like certain vitamins.
The question of marijuana being legalized for medical purposes has been a very controversial topic for a long time and we still struggle to answer it, however in more modern times, some states have chosen to legalize the plant in spite of the federal government’s classification of the drug. US congress placed Marijuana as a Schedule I Controlled Substance in 1970 meaning they considered it to have no medicinal value. It has remained there still today but since then 29 of 50 US states have legalized the medical use of marijuana. There is evidence that suggests that marijuana is able to treat many different medical conditions and some that suggests its harmful, due to the legal restrictions of marijuana, scientific study of the cannabis plants usefulness is limited. Marijuana has its pros and cons, and to determine whether it should be a medical option or not, one has to outweigh the other in some matter. What is the reason that some states like Texas have yet to implement a legal medical option?
