While reading these books, the text within the book impacts the reader’s perspective on society by the powerful words and examples shown throughout the novels.
Have you ever thought that one specific group was being judged or discriminated against based on superficial characteristics alone? The young adult novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton demonstrates the abuse of the lower class, the Greasers, by the higher class, the Socs, and reveals the social hierarchy that remains in the world to this day. This book reveals the systematic oppression of the Greasers that is determined by wealth, not worth, despite them all truly being the same. This is demonstrated through the actions of numerous character. Examples of this include when Ponyboy and Cherry Valance realise that despite their differences they all live under the same sun, how Bob’s rings represent the social power that the Socs have over the Greasers, and finally the notion that nothing will ever change between the Greasers and the Socs.
Imagine a young boy who has to watch behind his back in case a snotty rich kid was lurking in the streets wanting to beat up on little kids. “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton is full of differences so the reader can understand that people have different views than them. This book is a “call to action” because social class and violence issues are a big part of the world's problems 51 years ago and even today.
No matter where you go in the world, people are divided. They can be divided by their wealth or state of living these are social class. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. “‘...There’s four kinds of folks in the world. There’s the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there’s the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes,’” (Lee 302). In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem argues for the act that the poorer people in town were different because of how much money they had. Many people agreed and held a predetermined idea that people were different because of their social class. Class issues such as social prejudice occur in both To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. A person’s social class can largely affect how they are treated in society and what they can or cannot do.
In today 's society, equality is a big deal, with many people still fighting for their rights. People all over the world are still being discriminated against, a topic that is not uncommon for a vast amount of dystopian novels. In fact, it 's a very common theme for multiple dystopian pieces. Scott Westerfeld 's Uglies, Joelle Charbonneau 's The Testing, Liam Hughes ' The Social Classes, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. 's Harrison Bergeron, and Wes Ball 's interpretation of The Maze Runner all have social discrimination integrated into their story lines. Despite the many problems in dystopian societies, authors also present the classic hero that rises above those issues and works to rebuild their government or community. However, a hero isn 't just born, they 're made through a series of events such as problems with social class discrimination.

Secondly, authors can make heavy impacts on their readers in society about social inequalities. For example, in many novels and stories like Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and No place by Todd Strasser the author conveys social inequality in a way one can relate to or imagine in real life the same situation. Outsiders’ purpose is to convey to teenagers how to solve problems in society instead of being violent and hurting or possibly killing someone. No Place’s story is to tell the reader about society's issues, for example, discrimination of people in poverty since the main character became homeless. S.E. Hinton throughout Outsiders did not only show how there was discrimination between the greasers and the socs, but also how being a greaser in a lower financial state affected their lives compared to the socs who were in the middle or upper class.

Both books, The Testing and The Outsiders are fictional books. However, both books give examples of realistic scenarios that involve social inequalities. In The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, she shows the upper social class group, titled the Soc’s, picking on the lower social group, the Greasers. The main character, Ponyboy, once got jumped by the socs and they were yelling, “Need a haircut greaser?” (Hinton 5) In The Testing , the main character Cia is from a small colony which means the other competitors equate them with simple mindedness and easy competition. (Charbonneau 119) By showing the realistic effects that these inequities have on characters, the reader can see that this is no way that anyone should be treated.
Have you ever thought about how when authors write about how we are harming the environment, how people view that writing? Or even better have you thought about how the author wants us to think about it? Ecocritisism is when people study literature and the environment from the authors point of view. Over the course of time, many authors have attempted to resonate the truths of social and economic inequality through their works. Authors often use setting, symbolism, and irony to convey the way that things really are. In the novels The Old Man and the Sea, Animal Farm, and The Pearl, these writing elements are implemented to express the social and economic inequality of their times. Hemingway, Orwell, and Steinbeck employ setting, symbolism and irony to explore the nature of social and economic inequality by blatantly pointing out flaws within society that ultimately lead to its downfall.
