The story we read was called “The catcher in the rye”. The book took place in the year 1951 and a boy called Holden run’s around for quite a while with no help. It got me wondering if this story could happen today. I mean some of the topic’s are farfetch like booking a hotel at the age of sixteen. I think some part of the story could happen in the real world but not all of them. So I ask “can this story happen in 2017”.
Well to a lot has changed in the past sixty six years. We have technology, smartphone, THE INTERNET, and a lot more stuff. Think about all the people he would be calling if he had a smartphone, holy hell no one safe from him then. We have the all mighty internet now so everyone what we are doing like what i'm eating to the biggest scandal with celebrities, so I wonder “how

The human mind does not change a lot, we still have the same thoughts and drive. What I mean by drive is what keep us going, or to keep pushing for one's own purpose. Holden shows this many times in the book. We see this on his point of view with children and their innocence. He want children to keep their innocence because he thinks society is corrupt or phony in his words. Parent may also have this point of view with their own children. A parent job is to raise their children and protect them from harm. Another thing Holden point out is the nun’s in chapter fifteen.
We are a lot more open in this generation people are open to what you think. Like if you're gay or transexul, peolpe will accept it more then back in 1951. Back then a large amount of people would ridicule you for being gay, they also thought it was contagious and that makes no sense. But even today there are people except it today, there some people ack the same way. You should be able to do what you want to do, but that's what I think. There isn't any mention of transexul’s in the book, but i think it’s about the same as how they treated people being
The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D Salinger is a coming of age story. It is a story narrated by the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, who is a sixteen year old boy, but has a mind of a ten year old innocent kid. In the beginning he thinks of innocence as important, but later he realizes that growing up cannot be stopped. He wanders around the New York City by himself and gains experience of life that teaches him to become mature. This book is clearly written to show the theme of coming of age because it shows many symbols of coming of age, it shows the changes of young adults in modern life, and it creates an image of Holden growing up.
4. Who does Holden meet in the nightclub of the hotel? Why do these women depress him? Why does he spend time with them then? Three older women, because they are obsessed with movie stars
Thesis: In Catcher in the Rye, Salinger uses symbols to represent Holden’s life, goals and struggles, then connects them together to reveal major themes of isolation, loneliness, preserving innocence, and change.
Holden’s story takes place in the 1950s. Because of this, it is necessary that the reader reads the story from multiple points of views. As Foster puts it, “don’t read with your eyes” (Foster 228) meaning that it is sometimes necessary to read from a perspective that will let you relate to and sympathize with the characters. The time period is shown many times such as when Holden goes dancing and asks a girl if she feels like “jitterbugging a little bit” (Salinger 72) referencing an iconic dance from that era. What people said and how they said it were very different in the past, and it is important to keep that in mind while reading.
The Catcher in the Rye, a 1951 novel by J.D. Salinger, follows a 16 year old boy named Holden Caulfield, who spends 48 sleep deprived hours traipsing through New York. This novel questions the societal system in which we live, and often speaks on the complex transition from childhood into the adult world. Many of the people and objects symbolize Holden’s perception of innocence and the fragility of happiness. J.D. Salinger uses powerful symbolism to express the thematic idea that the loss of innocence is an inevitable rite of passage for all of humanity.
The Catcher in The Rye is a novel about Holden Caulfield’s struggle to find the reality of adulthood. For Holden his thought of growing up is absolutely frightening. He longs to hold on to the childhood he once had, but has to come to realize that it is time for him to grow up. Holden sees childhood and adulthood as two completely separate states that cannot coexist. The book explains his skirmish of learning the realities of the separate lives of children and adults.
Holden’s experience teaches teenages about struggles, in so many ways. For instance in The Catcher in the Rye taught me about self awareness such as realizing you can only change yourself and nobody else. I will never be able to change anyone else actions, but our own. Holden’s struggle with depression hit close to home for me. I know what it’s like to feel so depressed and unstable. However while reading the novel holden’s story made me feel like I wasn’t alone. I finally felt like I had someone who understood my thoughts completely. “I got pretty run-down and had to come out here and take it easy” (Salinger 3). I know what it’s like to be pretty run-down, when I was in the hospital for three days before I got admitted in kidspeace.
Teenagers across time periods and across the world are presented with relatively the same obstacles. Author J.D. Salinger attempts to capture these obstacles in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. The narrator, Holden, retells the story of a few days from when he was sixteen years old. He faces virtually the same problems as any teenager does, the struggle to fit in, find friends, and family issues, but with a twist. J.D. Salinger's purpose for writing The Catcher in the Rye is to illustrate the difference between the adult and teenage brains as well as the importance of an extended adolescence.
Recently, whenever anyone has asked me what I want to be when i am older, a wave of anxiety washes over me. The more occupations my mom throws out at me, the more and more phony they all seem. This is not due to the fact that there is nothing that interests me (and it is also not because recently I have been reading The Catcher in the Rye). I think that I cannot pinpoint my future with a crystal-clear image because there are so many things that interest me. I have been playing the piano for nearly 9 years. It seems like a rite that every Thursday I get in the car and travel to Grand Rapids for lessons--a rite that I have grown to love. Recently, my passion for piano has led me to begin giving lessons for the younger generation--hopefully
The Catcher in the Rye is the story of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen year old boy retelling the events of his life that have put him in the state he is currently in. It all started after his brother Ally died when he was just a young child. He was never able to truly heal, and was forced to go on with normal life, all while still carrying onto this emotional baggage.
To tell you the truth, the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is one sonuvabitch that can change you goddamn life. The novel begins by Holden talking about his life and background. Holden tells us the reader about the events that took place within a few days. From leaving Pencey Prep to nearly sleeping with a hooker, Holden expresses himself unlike most people. The author, “J.D. Salinger is a highly regarded American author whose most famous work, The Catcher in the Rye, has sold over sixty-five million copies. In addition to being known for his work, Salinger was also known for his reclusive behaviour”. Salinger’s reclusive behaviour would have helped him write The Catcher in the Rye because it gave him more time to write and think about creation of The Catcher in the Rye. “When J.D. Salinger published The Catcher in the
For this essay I will be writing about how the catcher and the rye by J.D Salinger is still relevant to today's teens. I believe that it's still relevant because I sometimes feel like how holden describes himself. The story talks about how holden wants to keep everything the same and never grow up basically stop time to protect the innocence of people. To begin with, it shows the struggle of how teenagers are stubborn and indecisive for example ; “I don’t give a damn, except that I get bored sometimes when people tell me to act my age. Sometimes I act a lot older than I am - I really do - but people never notice it.
The world wars of the early 20th century are often remembered as some of the most influential events in history because they impacted all aspects of Western culture, including literature. The postmodernist movement arose in the aftermath of the war, personified by extremely pessimistic outlooks on life. It was a departure from the already dismal modernist movement which came to prominence at the turn of the century. J. D. Salinger was a distinguished author during this time period. In the 1950’s, he published The Catcher in the Rye, possibly one of the most influential pieces of postmodernist literature ever written. The novel follows the life of teenager Holden Caulfield as he struggles to find purity somewhere in the postmodern era. He seeks
The Catcher in the Rye is a book about a guy named Holden Caulfield. He narrates the whole story to the readers. He starts off by telling the story about being at Pencey Prep school, which is a private school located in Pennsylvania. It is the day of the game and he misses it saying everyone is a bunch of “phonies.” He ends up getting expelled because he is failing four out of five classes and goes to say goodbye to his teacher Mr. Spencer. Before he leaves he goes back to his dorm to find his roommate, Stradlater, getting ready for a date with Jane Gallagher. Holden used to date Jane and he is very angry at Stradlater. When Stradlater returns from the date with Jane, Holden questions Stradlater immensely and Holden attacks Stradlater because he is in such a rage. Holden then realizes he has had enough of the prep school and leaves a couple days earlier to go back to Manhattan.
