Book Review : A Review Of A Book Review

In order to make this reflection as honest as I can, I’m going to have to reveal that my beliefs and idea on reading do not synchronize with those of Perrine and thus it is difficult to incorporate her advice and provide an unbiased reflection that does not conflict with the author's analytical interpretations. What is perhaps the punchline of the text states, “Immature readers seek only escape. Even when they think they are reading for interpretation or some useful moral, they insist that what they read return them always some pleasant or exciting image of the world or some flattering image of themselves” (Perrine 2). While the previous quote may not be completely applicable to me because the text was assigned, I can see myself getting lost within the text and with that, my interpretations. Had I perhaps distanced myself and not been allowed to get “lost” in the text then I would have provided an interpretation for the assigned novels with less emotional bias in it. Perrine then goes onto say an immature reader tends to “make fixed demands of every story and feel frustrated and disappointed unless these demands are satisfied. Often they stick to one type of subject matter” (Perrine 3). While I cannot see any educated individual following this, perhaps to some extent I may have allowed an untidy ending to fix my feelings toward a novel to be relatively

When one thinks of a novel, a word that usually will come to mind is fiction. In fact, other meanings for the word novel are new and unique. Although an author may use real places, real time, or base their story on real events in part, their outcome is essentially a creation. We, as readers, are in a sense captive to the writer's imagination and must conform to the rules of the worlds they create.

Often times, a reader becomes shocked by the ending of a story. They never saw the twist ending coming and it leaves them speechless. Could the reader’s initial surprise have been avoided? Most likely, yes. Authors frequently put clues into their stories and books that can help a reader figure out the conclusion. In the story “ Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, written by Ambrose Bierce, the reader is taken on a great escape from the main character’s execution. The unexpected ending cuts the escape short by revealing Peyton Farquhar, the leading character, is actually dead and swinging from Owl Creek Bridge. Many clues are planted within Peyton’s escape that clue the reader in to realizing the true ending.

Even though some people discount fiction as a sources of learning and think it is just for entertainment sake there is still much to learn from it. Fiction being written by the author will have his or her knowledge mixed into it. Learning from someone else’s prospective will help you solidify what you believe, either by backing it up or challenging it and making your values stronger in the process. In “Telling the Truth in Lies” Virginia Stem Owens says, “Fiction brings us a certain kind of news about the world we can get in no other way, because all other ways are abstract and detached, while fiction’s way is particular.” Fiction can teach the reader to believe and hope for a happy outcome or to protect themselves so they are not hurt by what

The author begins building his or her credibility by putting rhetorical questions, putting a study example that has been done, and the author successfully employs logic appeals but lacks pathos, which makes her purpose unclear.

Jalapeno bagels is about a boy named Pablo whom cannot decide what to take to school for International Day. He wants to bring something from his parents’ baker. He wants something that represent his heritage but he cannot decide what to bring. His mother who is Mexican baked pan dulce and change bars. His father who is Jewish baked bagels and challah. Both of the bake good were good but while helping his parents with the bakery on Sunday morning, Pablo made a decision on what to bring. He decided to bring jalapeno bagels because they are a mixture both of his parents and just like him too. The multicultural representations in the story line is Mexican and Jewish. The pictures that were drawn in the book, the family has the same color of skin even though the parents are different cultures and the main character is mixed. There were no different skin colors.

Even though the authors have valid points and cite credible sources, their argument fails to be effective in several ways. For one,

The truth, or whatever seems to be the truth, is your own interpretation. What you think is happening could either be completely wrong or something else entirely. This is the kind of book with an ending that leaves you gasping for air. This is the kind of book that punches you in the gut and laughs at your pain. It’s creepy, suspenseful, and an all-around thrill ride.

The ending of the book was very disappointing to me. I really enjoyed reading about how his mother was in pure denial and wanted to keep her son near her forever and how his father knew how hard it would be but he also knew that

They all have their own definiton of beauty. I find it is good to have your own opinion about things. Then you can hear other opinions and still have your own.
