(AGG) In the book, Under the Persimmon Tree, the author really shows how people’s lives can be devastated by war. (BS-1) Many families were left homeless due to the bombings in the Afghan War. (BS-2) Hundreds of people lost family members in the war. (BS-3) The main characters in this story, Najmah, Nur and Nusrat, victims of this war, decided the only place they could recover from the horrors they experienced was to return to the only home they knew. (TS) War can have many impacts on a person’s life; sometimes just by helping a person make tough decisions or by destroying one’s life completely.

(MIP-1) Many families were left homeless due to the bombings. (SIP-A) People that were displaced because of the bombings searched for shelter or a safe place to stay. These refugees went to the refugee camps. (STEWE-1) Najmah, who became a refugee after her home was blown up, was on her trip with Akhtar and Khalida and Akhtar was sent to get food. When he came back he told them about his experience. “There was nothing in the bazaar but a few packages of tea, and I had to fight for one of those… The women, children and elders from all over these hills are crossing over into Pakistan and the refugee camps at Torkham. Everyone is hungry” (Staples 101). People are struggling to find food to stay alive, and when they do, they may have to fight for it. (STEWE-2) Nusrat is a teacher that helps refugees.
