Two important figures in history who were well known for educating African Americans and who also changed the way the U.S education system worked were Booker T. Washington who focused on having education for real life jobs and not asking for equality from whites. He just focused on getting help from whites and accepting their place on earth. And W.E.B. du bois who focused on the exact opposite things that of booker t Washington. Du bois focused on a strategy called gradualist strategy. The gradualist political strategy focused on blacks being book smart to get anywhere in life. Booker t Washington was born April 5, 1856 into slavery by his mother Jane. Jane, booker, and his older brother john were 3 of the six slaves working on a small farm. Booker’s father was a local white farmer. There isn’t much to say about booker’s father because a white man impregnating a black women slave was not tolerated, especially not in the south. Because of that Jane guarded his identity. W.E.B. Dubois focused on a strategy called the gradualist political strategy. The gradualist political strategy tells that Du Bois was very focused on African Americans being book smart to get anywhere in life. He believed that they should be just like white, with high education and IQ’S which all came from reading, writing, and organized education. He felt the smarter the African American got, the more equal they were to the whites. African Americans were freed after the Civil War with the thirteenth amendment, which emancipated all slaves in the United States. Even though they were free, African Americans were not treated as equals because of the Jim Crow Laws, sharecropping, and segregation. Two African American leaders in the late 19th and 20th century – Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois – both longed for black equality and civil rights, yet each had a very different method to achieve this. Booker T. Washington intended for African Americans to eventually obtain equality, but his plan of racial accommodation betrayed their interests. However, W.E.B Du Bois had a better method for bringing social equality to the African Americans, since he made gaining equality one of his main focuses; therefore, he was right between the two.
In this essay the author argued the strategy employed by Mr. Booker T. Washington during a period in history where race relations were hyper sensitive. Mr. Washington felt that the only chance for the survival and development of the Negro race was to submit to the white man by giving up three critical rights of American society; those were, the right to vote, civil rights, and access to higher education. In doing so, he calculated that if black people focused on industrial education, wealth accumulation, and conciliation of the South, they’d stand a better chance of advancing as a race. Too often, society measures success by wealth, power, and status. In American society, those favored by pop culture like the Kardashians tend to wield more influence than rocket scientists or brain surgeons. Acting as a major determining factor of how success is perceived, power often trumps attributes such as intelligence and determination. However, Booker T. Washington firmly disagreed. He posited that how far a person advances and how many obstacles he overcomes should determine success. While Washington’s reasoning is valid in theory, the position one has achieved remains ultimately more significant in certain facets of life.
The common school teaches their students math, reading, science, and history, but this predictable curriculum is a newer concept. Many freed slaves did not know the basics of self-preservation, so it was irrational to teach them multiplication prior to hygiene. Booker T. Washington devoted his entire day to teaching "emancipated slaves basic math and reading as well as personal hygiene: how to comb one's hair, bathe regularly, and use a toothbrush." (Goldstein, 2015, p.53) Washington shows that education is not limited to a singular form or subject, however, it ranges from simple life lessons to learning the equation of a line.
DuBois focused on developing education for the African American race and philosophy to develop. This is the second chapter in his book The Negro Problem. He talks about that with an educated group of exceptional leaders, the rest of the African American community would also benefit from this education. DuBois and Washington are rivals during the time that this document was written and DuBois is trying to focus on industrial education, as like Washington did in his speech. DuBois claims “to attempt to establish any sort of a system of common and industrial school training, without first providing for the higher training of the very best teachers, is simply throwing your money to the winds (3).” Whereas Washington believed in an industrial education, DuBois believed that African Americans needed a classical education. He seeks to promote, “intelligence, broad sympathy, knowledge of the world that was and is and of the relation of man to it” (33-4). DuBois, wants blacks to get a classical education so that they would be able to do something with their lives and reach their full potential. He believes they need to do this for their own self to be able to make a living. I feel like this is very important because I do not think the race of someone should affect the way they are treated in society. At the early turn of the 20th Century United States, there was a large debate about how the average American viewed African Americans or Negroes. As a result, white consensus geared toward putting Africans in a type of caste system, where they would consider below whites, women, and immigrants. By this point, most African Americans were just conforming to this way of life and did not seek to change this. While this occurred, many intellectual black men sought to change how society treated African Americans. At the forefront of the respected intellectual was W.E.B. Dubois who sought to shake the foundation of caste and the Harvard professor by the name of Booker T. Washington who wanted to fight within the caste system. Both men had the right idea and the same end goal, which being the enhanced rights of blacks, but by how this would be different. The point of view that has a more grounded argument is W.E.B. Dubois; as seen in how Dubois talks on the basis of fighting the disenfranchisement of political power of African-Americans, against forfeiting civil rights and working toward the equality of a higher education for Negroes.

In my own opinion Booker T. Washington gave the best advice. The emphasis of W.E.B. Dubois is on blacks gaining equality with whites. Dubois believed that blacks should be educated and be book smart, in their quest to gaining equality with the whites. On the Contrary, Washington’s philosophy is based on the belief that blacks should get education and develop capabilities so that they can be useful to the society. He believed that blacks will have better standing in the society (and not necessarily equality) if they will put their attention on developing themselves rather than fighting for equality. I see this position of Washington as a wise position that could foster peaceful co-existence among Americans. While I do not consider Dubois’
DuBois also had distinct theories of what he thought African-Americans needed to put into practice, so that they would not be oppressed any longer. DuBois definitely saw the value and worth of African-American people getting both industrial and traditional education. DuBois envisioned all African-Americans being well educated, in the industrial arts and the classics, which would lead to being able to rise up in the world as leaders and teachers. DuBois explained Washington’s mindset as “And so thoroughly did he learn the speech and thought of triumphant commercialism, and the ideals of material prosperity, that the picture of a lone black boy poring over a French grammar amid the weeds and dirt of a neglected home soon seemed to him the acme of absurdities.” (DuBois, 2).
The status of the African-American increased little after Reconstruction. Some blacks were starting to accept their situation but two African American leaders did not. W.E.B Dubois and Booker T. Washington saw that the situation of poverty and social inequality were bringing down their race in the late 1800's and early 1900's. They came from completely different backgrounds, one rich and one a former slave, but they had the same purpose: they sought equality in the American society for African-Americans. Washington was more for slow integration into society and working your way up where as Dubois wanted immediate equality, which he thought the blacks deserved. W. E. B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington were both highly intelligent African American men who wrote about the disparities between the lives of whites and blacks in the United States during the nineteenth and into the twentieth centuries. Each man saw the way in which his fellow African Americans were being treated by the white majority and used their intelligence and persuasive skills to bring attention to this very serious issue. Both men fought for equality through nonviolent protest and the application of logical argument and reasoning in order to better their lives and those of their social and ethnic brothers. Despite their shared goal of racial and sociological equality, the two men had very different ideas about how equality would be achieved and about what the African American community should or ought to expect in terms of actually obtaining that equality.
W.E.B. DuBois, a black intellectual believed that Washington's strategy would only serve to perpetuate white oppression. DuBois initially advocated for Washington's strategy, however he grew to find it unacceptable as he became more outspoken about racial injustice. DuBois campaigned for a civil rights agenda and argued that educated blacks could accomplish social change. With the belief that African Americans should work together to battle inequality DuBois helped found the NAACP. DuBois was not content with attempting to gain an economic foothold; he wanted absolute equality in all aspects of life. DuBois believed that Washington "devalued the study of liberal arts, and ignored the economic exploitation of the black masses. He believed that "The Negro Race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men. The problem of education then, among Negroes, must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth.' [which] is the problem of developing the best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the worst." Two great leaders in the late 19th and 20th century of the black community were W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. During the time of unfair treatments, few people found the courage to speak out on their beliefs for a change. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois regularly coherent their opinions and stand for what they believe is right. However, they sharply disagreed on strategies for black social and economic progress. Their opposing personality, philosophies, and legacy can be found in much of today 's discussions over how to end class and racial injustice.
