Born to Serve Acts of service defines who I am, a servant unto the Lord. The earliest I can recall recognizing that I was here on earth to serve occurred when at the age of 10, I began caring for a newborn baby. That baby became my responsibility for the next 10 years of my life. From getting up at night to tend the baby to giving the baby soapy water enema’s for the bowels, I provided the care for this child. This I did willingly, never resentfully. Nor did I realize that if I hadn’t done what I naturally do, this child may have died. I am so glad God gave me a servant’s heart because in the years after that, life was challenged and I was treated as though my name was Cinderella. Nonetheless, God has helped me rise above it all. My employment with Community Action Commission of Fayette County provided many opportunities to interact with employees and homeowners. If the construction crew and homeowners were building homes on a Saturday, sometimes I would prepare lunch and take it to them. This one Saturday, I decided to make homemade chicken and noodles, green beans, salad, rolls, and Texas Sheet Cake for dessert. They were very verbal with their disappointment. Thinking that I didn’t want to overload their stomach with such heavy food as the last time, I had prepared something lighter. For people who did not have to use their own time to go get lunch, did not have to pay for lunch, nor prepare it, to me they were ungrateful. Feeding them was done on my day off and time away from my family. It taught me to make life easier on me and lunch began to be pizza and pop.
