The botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin protein. The causative organism that makes up this toxin is Clostridium botulism and sometimes Clostridium butyricum or Clostridium baratii. They are the gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacteria. The bacteria that make this toxin are naturally found in many places and it is rare for them to make people sick. This bacterium makes spores that act like a protective coating. The spores help these bacteria survive in the environment, even in very extreme conditions. In Sarah’s case her symptoms were blurred vision and her throat began to close and it made it difficult for her to swallow or even speak. Pseudomonas fluorescens is a bacterium that is mainly found in the natural environment such as soil and plants and is said to be a contaminant in food specifically refrigerated foods along with water (2, 3). It is a Gram-negative bacillus. Due to its cause of contamination in food, the transmission route from reservoir to human would be through the digestion tract and can get into the blood stream (3). The bacterium is generally nonpathogenic, but can become a pathogen if traveled to the human body. However, it is very rare to cause disease which means little virulence factors (3). Disease will come from spoiled food products from the breakdown of P. fluorescens present. (3) Some studies also have come about from this in infecting patients who undergo chemotherapy (2, 3).
