I have used the Boys and Girls club as a prime example in my theory but there are many organizations established that focus on the development of our youth. My theory focuses on establishing this structure in the school system and not be something that can only be obtained if it is sought out. It is a theory that has been proven to have significant impact through already established organizations. Key organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), an organization whose motto can be found on their organizations homepage follows, “We help children realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities” best describes the goal adolescent mentoring can achieve (n.d). Found on the website under …show more content…
Both the BGCA and BBBS organizations have are establish programs and have made a significant impact in many lives, not all the results led to a 100% success rate of alumni over the past 100 years. As Jean Rhodes (2009) describes in her book, Stand by Me, although one good relationship can transform a life, a careless approach can do tremendous damage to a child’s sense of self and faith in orders just the same (p. 3). The weakness in this theory is that not all individuals will acclimate and benefit from the structure and the results may not be as expected. Rhodes (2009) later explains that vulnerable children would be better left alone than paired with a mentor who does not recognize and honor the responsibility they have been given (p. 3). I will include myself in the weakness of my theory because in 2007, I volunteered as a Big Brother to a child named Nicholas. Three months later after we started to establish a bond I short noticed deployed to Iraq within two weeks and in the rush to get finances, my spouse, and other issues positioned I neglected to inform the program or my “Little Brother” that I would be leaving and left without any explanation. It was not until a few weeks later while I was in Iraq when I realized what I had done and still to this day I consider that one of my major regrets in life. I could blame it on being young and naïve but it was a lack of responsibility and can only hope no damage was done. The weakness of my theory would overall remain with the mentor, that not all mentors will be informed and
The film Boyz ‘n the Hood, directed by John Singleton is more than just a Hollywood blockbuster. The film incorporates numerous criminological theories and also demonstrates the concepts of conformity and deviance. This paper will analyze the characters of Tre, Ricky, Doughboy, Furious and other friends and family and show how criminological theories and the concepts of conformity and deviance play a part in their lives.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a program offered in a number of communities nationwide. The program allows an adult volunteer “Big” and a child “Little” to form a bond. When these relationships are developed, they are meant to have a “direct and lasting effect on the lives of the young children that are involved”. The goal of this program is to allow the children that are participating to know that they have the ability to succeed and thrive. The adults in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program provide the children (aged 6-18) with a “strong, enduring, and professionally supported one-to-one relationship. It is important for these children to have
The 1985 comedy drama movie, The Breakfast Club, included five teenagers who are in Saturday school detention for various reasons and at the end of the day must write an essay that explains how they define themselves. In Saturday school detention, each teenager learns about one another, what they have in common, and why they were assigned to be in detention. The teens all have similar problems with stereotyping of how society and especially how their parents define them. In the movie, four of the main characters: Claire, John, Andrew, and Allison experience at least one of the following theories: strain theory, social learning theory, control theory, and labeling theory.
Criminologist James Fox of Northeastern University predicts that murders committed by teens will skyrocket as the population of kids 10 and under is higher than population of 21st century teens by 20%. (Stephens) Mentoring is the act of helping out someone that isn't as knowledgeable or experienced in different areas. The goal is to make them leaders. (Patterson)
This study is limited to the freshman mentor program at one high school in a 30 high school district located in Maryland. Data was collected from a representative group of mentors. Interviews were limited to discussion of the role of the mentor in working with the freshmen mentees. Although many high schools have freshmen mentor programs, each school develops a unique program to fit the needs of the students feeding into their school. Data was collected from a small representative group of mentors and they were all
“The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches but to reveal to him his own. - Benjamin Disrael This quote is similar to a Chinese Proverb that says “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”(Chinese Proverb). Both essentially say the same thing, and that is, you can only help someone so much until they need to realize they are capable of doing great things on their own. Higher Risk youth benefit from guidance, but once they have figured everything out they can move on alone. These two quotes apply to mentoring because, mentoring is like showing someone the way to life.
Boyz in the Hood starts off with the character Tre Styles as a young man who lives in South Central, Los Angeles with his mom Rita. The social work student viewed this beginning portion of the movie portraying his young life as a social worker. The social work student noticed that Tre lived with his mother in an apartment in a rough neighborhood. Tre went to school but had problems acting out and being the class clown. Tre and the friends he hung around here had foul language and used profanity as young kids. This is just one example of how Tre’s surroundings influenced his life. According to Newman & Newman (2014), the Social Role theory suggests that a person learns behaviors from observing in their environments. Young Tre Styles learned profanity from somewhere in his rough environment and this is a method of learning socially. Rita, his mother was working on her Master’s degree and wanted better for Tre, so it is unlikely she promoted the use of profanity in her household. A contract between the two was drafter and Tre agreed with his mother that if he did not behave he would move in with his father. Rita stayed true to the contract they drafted and took Tre to live with his father Furious, so Tre could learn how to be a man.
When I was younger their were more inspirational television shows to watch, such as Thats so Raven, Full House, The Cosby Show an many other television shows that you and your family can sit down and watch together. Today the younger kids do not have anything like those positive television shows to look at anymore. Nowadays we have T.V shows that got to do with cheating, lies, and deceit. What ever happen to those T.V shows that you parents wouldn’t mind you to watch without having their parental advisement. One T.V show that is so disrespectful and degrading to me is the television show “Bad Girls Club.” Bad girls club is a reality television series. It centers on seven rebellious women aged from 21 to 27 with different personalities and backgrounds, who have a number of behavioral problems. its original plot was to try to help seven behavior problem women change their self destructing antics, while they spend three months in a fine mansion with one another, during which they have to go by some specific rules, which they must get kick out of the show if they don’t obey them. The women on the show have negatively influenced the younger viewers with 24/7 drinking and partying, the promiscuity, and the constant fighting. The show fails to show the outcome of the actions the women on the show will have to face in real life, but instead it paints a picture that there are no real consequences to the actions that they chose to follow but getting fame.
Boyz N the Hood, directed by John Singleton is one in many films to showcase the harsh reality of African Americans living in the “hood”. Hood films, as characterized by an identifiable urban setting, such as New York or Los Angeles, and within a modern time frame, use themes of hip hop culture to highlight the issues that plague urban minority communities (Massood 145). Singleton, with Boyz N the Hood, offers a commentary on the harsh experience of young, urban black males by demonstrating the issues faced by these young men, namely lack of upward mobility and cyclical and internal violence. One of the main issues highlighted in the film that plague the communities of young, urban black men is a lack of upward mobility. Social theory has
The community organization my group chose to research in Champaign County was the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club. I will begin with a description of the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club including the history of the organization as well as the activities that take place at the club. I will then talk about the role that that Don Moyer plays in the Champaign-Urbana community that was learned through an interview with Ray Pratt who is current Director of Finance at Don Moyer. Being that I am familiar with the Boys & Girls Club organizations both in Champaign and Chicago, I will share how I have connected with the organizations within the past few years. Being that the organization was founded to improve certain communities, I will explain how the activities

This essay will start by defining mentoring, and giving a brief understanding of mentoring. This essay will then go on to identify and evaluate a number of key factors that may influence the effectiveness of a mentoring relationship. This essay will focus on the example of mentoring within schools and a learning mentor to be more specific.
Implementing a strong mentoring program that fosters individual and personal growth within the company is vital for the future of this firm. This includes setting up and maintaining a mentoring program. The mentoring program will be set up with individuals from all levels of achievement, that are willing to devote a portion of their time to the firm’s prosperity.
Accompanied with the current shift towards more organic organisation structures and more emphasis on the learning organisation, mentoring provides a more all round experience to the mentees by getting them confident with their role with the organisation. It also improves communication throughout the organisation by allowing mentees to give feedback and learn in a not so formal fashion which helps people feel more relaxed and develops the formal and informal culture of the organisation.
