1.) To what extent could Dean expect to apply the philosophies and techniques of JIT described in this chapter to the running of a staircase cell.
Dean Hammond can implement JIT techniques that seek to eliminate the significant amount of waste that exists in his current operational processes. Basically, there are seven wastes to be considered as obstacles in the lean system. It consists of over production, wasting time, transportation, process, inventory, motion, and defectives. As a result of implementing this concept, it will arrange a better-valued chain and create a solid base of production.
While the customized nature of B&B’s products isn’t conducive to the type of streamlining seen in volume manufacturing applications, they can

These same individuals could also be responsible for delivering these pieces to various stations, eliminating the need for the station workers to do so.
By creating a staircase cell in their factory, B&B can realize efficiencies that would allow them to eliminate waste and be more competitive in the areas of price and lead time. This would eventually reduce their order backlog, making their production more in line with estimates.
2.) What are likely to be the main categories of costs and benefits in establishing the cell? Are there any non-financial benefits which should be taken into account?
B&B may face some initial outlay costs in creating specific staircase stations. Additionally, there may be costs associated with training, as they ensure that their joiners can function as experts in their respective areas. This might even require a short period of inactivity or even a halt in production as they seek to get workers up to speed. However, the benefits seem to outweigh these initial costs. B&B would be in a position to handle more volume and could make far better use of their existing resources. Orders would have a better chance of being completed on time and the elimination of waste would allow for more competitive quotes. Ultimately, this would put B&B in a more competitive position to win business and become more profitable.
3.) At what stage, and how, should Dean sell his idea to the Joinery Manager and the workers?
Mr. Hammond should sell
The identity of the Bra Boys can be seen through their values and attitudes. They are presented through the Cody, the value of brother ship and Attitude of brother ship through their tattoos and being there for each other.
The book All American Boys, by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely takes place in the United States, although the state is left unspecified. The time period is also unconfirmed, but through assumption it can be estimated that it takes place in modern day time. Where it connects to American History isn’t exactly a specific section, but moreso just racial tension in general, linking the book to various parts of history. The main characters in All American Boys are Rashad and Quinn. Rashad is an African American boy who gets into an accident while at a convenience store, causing a police officer to assume that he was stealing. The policeman then proceeds to brutally beat Rashad, despite his compliance. Then there is Quinn, a white boy who, while
Energy is one of the single most important concepts to keep in mind when writing, it can make even the most insignificant occurrences interesting. Energy plays with the reader’s senses combining subject matter, leaps/ spacing and words into one to create a fascinating piece of work. “Good writers choose a topic they know a lot about—relationships, travel, growing up, bedrooms, hotels, restaurants, the synagogue on 42nd Street—and they trust that they will discover things about the topic as they work.” (Sellers 71) Rick Moody author of “Boys” has taken a relatable topic the process of growing up and has turned a thirty year frame into a condensed
The article “How Boys Become Men” written by Jon Katz, gives a positive statement on how boys still haven’t change and are still growing up the same. Jon Katz, shares with us while walking his dog one day, he saw a boy get beaten by a group of older boys. While walking towards him, Katz asked if he was okay; the boy said yes and begun to swing like nothing happened. I believe that what Jon Katz states is true, because the fact is; boys are always going to think they’re the Alpha Male in every situation. For example: who can climb the highest Rock, who can make a bigger splash in the pool or who can maybe get a girlfriend first.
Documentaries reinforce or criticise dominant representations of groups in society. Discuss in relation to a documentary you have studied.
Mini-Load storage systems create better space utilization which reduces travel distance for order selection personnel, thereby improving productivity.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America is a program that was introduced in the 1860’s in Hartford Connecticut. “Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. A cause was born.” Now made up of more than 4,300 clubs and in their 103rd year, the goal of these clubs is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”
“In an age when Americans enjoy dozens of cable sports channels, when professional athletes often command salaries in the tens of millions of dollars...it’s hard to fully appreciate how important the rising prominence of the University of Washington’s crew was to the people of Seattle in 1935” (Brown 173). As seen by this quote, America is a much different place than what it was in the 1930s. The times have changed significantly. In today’s day and age we have it all too good. The world we live in is one of leisure and not nearly as much hard work as there used to be. Back in the early 20th century the people had it pretty rough and dealt with many frightening problems of their generation such as
“Friend stopped, stood still, and braed himself.. see I’m no chicken” (Katz 221). Male maturation is a very complex sophisticated process. In “How Boys Become Men” Jon Katz takes on the challenge and head ache of analyzing this process. He explains how learning one of the central ethics of the gender is experiencing pain rather than showing fear and emotion. We do so by taken on challenges because we feel obligated to in front of our friends in order to not look cowardly. How we demonstrate machismo and lack commitment, how we do whatever we can to fit into the society around us and are willing to do anything just to resemble coolness and absolutely no tolerability of getting pushed around. It called Guy Code, a set of
What do we learn about life in the 18th century and how successfully does the writer convey this information whilst telling us a good story?
The amount of work in progress is minimized. Fewer tools are needed. The parts do not have to travel between the work stations. The control systems becomes redundant, everything takes place in the garage.
Proximity to raw materials gives benefits on distribution channel which is already organized by formers. This also gives an added advantage in reducing transportation costs
The manufacturing cost can be lower as the rearrangement of the production line to meet urgent order can be minimize or even eliminated.
There are two main potential issues with this approach. By reducing production lead times a company would likely increase manufacturing costs, but this increase should be leveraged by the increase in demand. The other issue would be the drop of the utilization rate by ten percent using this method. The key would be training the staff to implement faster change-times, which is not an impossible achievement.
