Beowulf reveals different characteristics about the Anglo-Saxon society. The different characteristics are bravery, truth, and honor these characteristics are important to the Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf. These characteristics show how Beowulf and the Anglo-Saxons live there everyday life and how they treat other people. Beowulf reveals these characteristics by his actions and the words he says Beowulf follows these characteristics throughout his life. Beowulf always shows honor and bravery and he always tells the truth.
One of the different characteristics that Beowulf represents about Anglo-Saxon society is bravery. An example of how he reveals bravery is that Beowulf was a thane and thanes were expected to be brave all the time. Thanes were

A lack of bravery is seen in Hrothgar's men, who cower in their beds while Beowulf and his fellow Geats face the monster Grendel. Beowulf exhibits great bravery in everything he does before facing Grendel Beowulf took of his helmet and fought weaponless deciding that using a weapon or protection of any kind would make the battle to easy. Reckless and impressive actions like these demonstrate Beowulf's courage and daring and make him appear more heroic. Over fifty years later, Beowulf shows the same qualities when fighting the dragon, as does Wiglaf, who aids him fighting the dragon. Neither man could be deterred by lack of defense because both demonstrated heroic bravery. Beowulf reveals tremendous bravery in each of his battles, but exceptional fearlessness is displayed in his fight against a dragon to defend the people of his kingdom Beowulf is very old at the time of this battle, so he knows the chances of him being able to defeat the dragon and survive are very slim, despite the unlikelihood of his victory, Beowulf still chooses to fight. As king, Beowulf abides to the norms of Anglo-Saxon culture and feels that he must be the one to lead his men to battle no matter what the cost. All of Beowulf's
The first trait Beowulf shows off is his bravery. He shows his bravery by traveling across the ocean to ask the Danes if he and his men can go out and defeat the terrorizing monster Grendal. In the poem Beowulf goes to the King of the Danes and says “… Grendal and I are called/ Together, and I’ve come. Grant me, then,/ Lord and protector of this noble place,/ A single request! … That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ May purge all evil
He showed courage by risking his own life to help Hrothgar and the people of Herot by volunteering to fight Grendel. Beowulf states “That I alone, and with the help of my men, may purge all the evil from this hall” (pg.48). He also showed courage by fighting the dragon, even though he was getting too old, he still wanted to help and fight the dragon. He stated “I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (pg.56-57). Beowulf exemplified having courage by putting down his weapons and armor in the battle between him and Grendel, he wanted to fight him equally considering Grendel had no weapons. He made it a battle of strength and he displayed courage by believing in himself and taking a risk in fighting against Grendel. Beowulf was very full of courage, which he proved by fighting in his battles and risking his life for the sake of others.
Courage, bravery, and strength are three heroic Anglo-Saxon characteristics that tie together perfectly. Without courage, you will not have strength and bravery. Without strength and bravery, you will not have the courage to face your challenges. Anglo-Saxons believed three of these characteristics were perfectly interwoven in the ideal Anglo-Saxon hero (Garcia). Beowulf identifies to three of these Anglo-Saxon characteristics flawlessly as he fights the monstrous Grendel. Courage means fighting even if it means death; it means challenging your fate and being brave no matter the circumstance (Cascio). Beowulf shows special strength and bravery when he has the courage to renounce his use of weapons and protection when battling Grendel. “No weapons, therefore, for either this night: unarmed he [Grendel] shall face me if face
Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.”(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, “When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins... No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.”(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem.
The next characteristic that Beowulf had that showed how he was an Anglo-Saxon hero is his superhuman strength. One quote that shows this characteristic is, “Follower and the Strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in
Beowulf’s courage is called once again, and this is the final battle. In this battle, Beowulf has to defeat a fire breathing dragon, symbolizing Satan. First of all, Beowulf is very old at this point. Once he heard about his home being destroyed, he left to fight the beast right away. “Then Beowulf was given bad news,/ a hard truth: his own home,/ the best of buildings, had been burnt to a cinder”(2324-2326). This shows how couragous Beowulf really is. Beowulf is a very old man at this point and his courage is too big and he has to defeat this monster for himself for destroying his home. Secondly, Beowulf fights the dragon on his own. In the poem the dragon is to be symbolized as Satan and he is ready to fight. “The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/ trusted his own strength entirely/and went under the crag” (2540-2545). Last of all, Beowulf is fighting the dragon and is nearly dead, Wiglaf had enough courage to come help. Beowulf and Wiglaf were able to defeat the dragon. “The noble son of Weohstan/ saw the king in danger at
Beowulf has confidence when he battles. Beowulf announces that he will fight Grendel, the evil that has been lurking them for a long time. However; Beowulf says he will fight with his bare hands instead of using weapons (Lines 400-490). This shows how he is brave enough to challenge Grendel with a single combat with only hands and in the end, he wins. Another example is when Beowulf boasts, Unferth interrupts him and insults him. Then Beowulf replies, “The fact is, Unferth, if you were truly as keen and courageous as you claim to be Grendel would never have got away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horrors everywhere” (590-595). This is an example of where he shows courage because he corrects Unferth and makes him look as a fool for not stating the truth of what actually happened. Also, this explains while they were swimming he was fighting off sea creatures along their swim, which is why he lost. According to Heaney, Beowulf shows courage when he believes he can defeat the dragon. During when Beowulf fights the dragon, it states, “Yet the prince of the rings was too proud to line up with a large army against the sky-plague. He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all its courage and strength, for he had kept going often in the past, through perils and ordeals of every
Beowulf is a prime example of what it means to be courageous. In his fight with Grendel, he chooses “[n]o weapons, therefore, / for either this night: unarmed he shall face me / if face me he dares” (683-84). Beowulf has never encountered Grendel before. He has only heard the stories of the beast’s evil doings, so going into a fight with no protection requires great strength and bravery. Beowulf is the only man to dive into the waters to fight Grendel’s Mother. He goes into the fight believing “life doesn’t cost him a thought” (1536). The outcome of the battle does not faze Beowulf because a warrior should
Beowulf in Beowulf and King Arthur in The Once and Future King both exhibit their courageousness. Arthur shows his courage when he fights the army of King Lot. “In the morning, almost before they were formed, Arthur was on them. In conformity with his own tactics, he sent only a small troop of forty spears to start the work.” The excerpt shows Arthur decides to still go to battle despite Lot’s army being vaster than his own. Beowulf shows his courageousness when he fights Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. “‘I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought/In endless battles. I am old, now,/But I will fight again, seek fame still,” This extract shows Beowulf’s courage before he goes into battle. Beowulf tells
Beowulf’s last test of courage comes in his old age when his people are threatened by a “mighty” dragon. Beowulf felt as if something he had done had caused the irascible beast to wreck havoc on his people, “killing and destroying” them and their homes with its “molten” breath. Knowing what had to be done, Beowulf bravely faced the dragon, while all of his people, except for one, fled in fear. His last battle, which ended in death, displayed Beowulf’s unwavering courage, the type that every hero should possess.
Beowulf , an epic poem written by an anonymous author, tells the tale of a great warrior and king. The literary device characterization is used to bring the character’s personality to life. Thus, Beowulf is described in great detail. He demonstrates the qualities of bravery, courage, and honesty. One characteristic that Beowulf possesses is bravery.
Bravery is probably the hardest trait a leader can possess because it’s not something that you can be taught, it’s something that you’re born with and only a few are able to show this bravery through their leadership. Again, in his fight with both Grendel and Grendel’s mother, Beowulf demonstrates another leadership quality; bravery. First off, even fighting them both is brave beyond comprehension, yet along fighting Grendel with no weapon! After defeating Grendel, he then has to march into the swamp of an angry mother who had just killed his friend and fight a creature even scarier than Grendel. Also, even in his old age when he had been ruling his kingdom for 50 years, Beowulf still decides to fight a fire breathing dragon.
A characteristic of Beowulf is courageous. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens you. Beowulf wasn’t necessarily frightened, but he did do something that frightened the men of Hrothgar. Beowulf does many things to show his courage to the people of Hrothgar. One way he shows his courage is when he fights Grendel, the monster who was killing and eating the men of Hrothgar, without any
Beowulf’s battle with the dragon demonstrates Beowulf’s courage, his warrior mentality, and loyalty to his people, even a lone warrior was brave enough to join Beowulf, Wiglaf. When Beowulf was faced with the impossible task of defeating the dragon, he went ahead and protected his people, even though he was facing certain death. The dragon, the beast was able to bellow fire from his mouth. Most people run in the opposite direction of fire and harm’s way, but Beowulf ran toward the chaos. His warrior mentality shows that he follows the warrior code. Beowulf was a courageous, strong, humble man and possessed these traits that made him an ultimate, pure warrior. Wiglaf shows up to help Beowulf slay the dragon. The rest of the people are hiding in the woods, scared and unwilling to help fight the beast.
Some of the major events that happened in Beowulf had a significant comparison to the Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. Some of the main traits that the Anglo-Saxons stood for were bravery, which we see when Beowulf goes to fight Grendel’s mother. The Anglo-Saxons stood for hospitality, which we also see when Beowulf was “adopted” by King Hrothgar after his battle with Grendel’s mother. And the last major trait that we see with the Anglo-Saxons is portrayed as strength. Beowulf showed strength when he ran out to fight the monster by himself.
