Bringing Slaves and Indentured Servents to the United States Essay

As production of goods such as rice and tobacco increased in the New World and native Indians decreased in population, it became evident there was need for an alternative labor source. Following the example of the British and via a treacherous sea voyage, two kinds of labor came to the colonies from Europe and Africa: indentured servants and slaves respectively. Once on land, slaves were the bottom of the food chain and indentured servants slightly higher. “As a Pennsylvania judge explained in 1793, indentured servants occupied a middle rank between slaves and free men” (Tindall, Shi 116). While others succumbed to death, the ones that continued the voyage lived in constant fear.
While there are great many differences between the fears of indentured servants and slaves on this voyage, they also had similar fears, death being the most prominent. It is clear both groups feared they would die on the ships. The slaves however, feared mostly how they would die and not that they would die. Slaves also had the additional fears of being whipped and of the unknown circumstances they were headed to. “the crew used to watch us very closely who were not chained down to the decks, lest we should leap into the water: and I have seen some of these poor African prisoners most severely cut for attempting to do so, and hourly whipped for not eating” (Equiano, Oladuah). While both the indentured servants and slaves expected land would provide relief from their voyage, this was far from the truth.
Indentured servants and slaves had different expectations of life in the colonies. The indentured servants, having knowingly entered into contracts to work off their fare to the New World in order to avoid jail or poverty knew what to expect. They expected to work as blacksmiths, planters, etc. for a fixed number of years and eventually earn their freedom. Abducted and sold into slavery, the African slaves were familiar with
