British colonization had great influence on many people in different areas of the world. Their spread of trade, ideas, and government are seen in several developed colonies. India, one of these colonies, experienced significant changes with British colonization. However, the impact of the British also provided negative effects. Socially, economically and politically India would be changed with the arrival of and influence of the British.
In the 1600’s Britain began using India as a trade port and quickly developed it as a central trade center. Before Britain’s presence in India, the country was originally ruled by the Mughal Empire and inhabited by its citizens. Aided by Europe’s presence, the Mughal Empire quickly fell apart and experienced fighting among smaller states. The East India Company established control in 1757 and became a powerful influence, paving the way for future colonization. Improving the education system and implementing their culture became a goal for the British (Rodriguez). Along with education, new laws were put in place for the Indian citizens. Nevertheless, groups rebelled against these new laws and ultimately created more conflict between Britain officials and Indians. Finally, more changes in Indian life came in the area of the economy and taxes. The Indian economy was not allowed to operate independently and heavy taxes were implemented on the people. Also, the East India Company brought with it hope for new trade possibilities and prosperity for India. However, instead of prosperity, famine resulted due to demand for trade products by the East India Company. India was continuously being molded into the perfect colony for Great Britain with the many changes they forced upon the
