There was certainly magic created when Bethany High’s revival of ‘Pippin’ burst onto the scene at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall on the 10th, 11th and 12th of December. Almost 200 students of Bethany High were involved in the circus-inspired production of the musical which featured an acrobatic troupe of performers, led by the charismatic Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. ‘Pippin’ is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The musical talks about letting a child discover himself by following his dreams and this relatable message of fulfilling one’s aspirations was portrayed quite well on stage by the talented ensemble cast. The character that I am going to develop more in this movie will be Rosie, and her musical career. I have made her into a major character, following the same musical life as she had in the first film, but she is now the main character. She is a beautiful, talented young woman who wishes to peruse her musical career around the globe. She is a newly-wed to Willie, and they are planning on having a child. Her musical career is the most important thing in her life, and she will do anything to expand her knowledge and experience.

Born in January, less than a month after his mother finished performing in the Nutcracker, Joshua Colley was destined to own the stage. Before Joshua’s talents took New York City by storm, he lived in Trinity, Florida with his parents, Bradley and Robbie Colley, where they owned a Children’s Theatre Company. Joshua, along with his twin brother, Cameron, spent his early years playing backstage, memorizing all the lines to the current productions, and reenacting them for his friends and family. His parents used to tease their actors that they would replace them with their sons one day, but they couldn’t have began to know the even more spectacular journey their boy’s talents would take them.

From an early age, I loved to perform. Being the youngest girl with three older brothers, I could never get enough attention; This meant singing, dancing and being extremely outgoing to get everyone’s eyes on me. I still hear stories about my younger self dancing in front of mirrors, babbling about my dream of being a “star”. It wasn’t until much later, however, that I found I could put my love of performing to use.
However, throughout the course of the play several Youngers’ dreams come into direct conflict with one another or even the family dynamic itself. Especially when it involves the life insurance policy check that is coming which could change all their lives. Which also becomes a main focal point for all the strife in the family.
The first we see of Rose, played in this production by Angela Harrington, is the classic image of an overbearing stage mother as she tells young Louise, played by Hannah Buhman, to “sing out” alongside the real star of their Vaudeville show, young “Baby June,” played by Lauren Coleman. After their performance and back at their small home, Rose expresses her big dreams of fame and talent for her children, focusing primarily on June and pushing Louise to the side. However, the lack of money is a problem is achieving this dream and Rose’s father, Pop (Tiago Rodrigues), tries to convince Rose to settle down and refuses to let Rose borrow money. In the song, “Some People” Rose expresses her dreams about June and her discontent with “setting still.” This is the first we get to hear of Harrington’s voice and it is fantastic, loud, and commanding which not only sounds great but perfectly fits Rose’s character and personality. After stealing her father’s gold plaque to sell for money, she and her children travel to
As the lights dimmed and the music began, I realized that my dreams were becoming a reality. I knew each of the songs, the names of every cast member, and the sequence of events. The story, which was based off the Italian opera La Boheme, was fresh in my mind. I could picture each of the characters, Roger, Mark, Mimi, and all the others, long before they took the stage.
There I stood a short, chubby eleven year old boy ready to take on the world of professional theatre. Looking back now I realize that I had no clue what I was getting myself into, but at the time I thought of myself as “Broadway Ready.” As I wandered through the densely packed hallways I would brush past all of the equity actors, they would smile at me or make comments such as
Earlier this year I was able to take part in a local production of Pippin the Musical, by the South Coast Coral and Arts Society (SCCAS). SCCAS has been performing in Victor Harbor for over 60 years and have produced many memorable productions, such as the Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar, and most recently My Fair Lady where I had the pleasure of playing Freddy Eynsford-Hill the main love interest. Winning many local awards and a few state awards SCCAS has proved that they are ready to step up into more complex and dynamic productions. Robert Bell, was very gracious to receive the Adelaide theatre guide award for his performance as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, was determined to bring something fresh, and exciting
