Brothers and Sister Maude comparison

Comparison between the range of emotions felt by the speaker in ‘Sister Maude’ and ‘Brothers’.
In Both ‘Sister Maude’ and ‘Brother’ a range of language devices are used in order to portray the different emotions and the varied relationships the poem focus on.
Both poems use structural elements in order to portray a certain effect on the reader and to make them feel certain emotions just based on the way the poems are structured. In ‘Sister Maude’ the enjambment between each of the lines emphasises the jealousy of ‘Maude’ herself and the continuation of the jealousy she undergoes for her sisters lover. However ‘Brother’ has a much more simpler meaning towards the reader as it is the emotion felt by the younger brother as his older brother has left him while the younger brother went back to get some bus fare. The brother cowardly says to his younger brother ‘you should go and ask mum’ for the bus fare as the brother does not want to confront him. The older brother thinks he is old enough and mature enough to take his younger brother out and be trusted; this turns out to be a complete juxtaposition to the reality and juxtaposition to the title as true brother are not ones that leave you for a ‘joke’.
Guilt is a theme that occurs in both poems as the individual feels remorseful for what they’ve done. In ‘Sister Maude’ the guilt is quite an obvious one; the guilt of Maude killing her sisters lover out of jealousy. The hatred of Maude’s sister is emphasised particularly in the last two stanzas and most effectively in the last line; ‘Bide you with death and sin.’ Even at the end of the poem Maudes sister has not forgiven her and has no future plans of doing so due to the full stop appearance at the end. This really cuts off the poem and the relationship between Maude and her sister as a sister relationship is thought to be a loving and caring one which completely juxtaposes the entirety of the poem. Have you ever despised your sibling/s at one point, but later started to appreciate them in your life? In James Hurst's short novel, "The Scarlet Ibis," Doodle is a disabled child and the narrator is his brother, who despises him. The narrator, known as Brother, wanted to murder Doodle due to his disability, but learns that Doodle is not much of a burden. He sets out to teach Doodle abilities that he could never do before, but instead, he pressures him too far and ends up leading him to his tragic death. Thus, in "The Scarlet Ibis," Hurst uses diction, symbolism, foreshadowing, and similes to establish a horrifying mood during the coffin scene part of the story, a melancholic mood during the death of the scarlet ibis, and a dreary mood during the death of Doodle part of the story.
The next difference that stands out between the two poems is the different tones in the speakers. In the poem by Robert Hayden, the tone comes off as having sadness and regret towards the speaker’s father. The poem says, “What did I know, what did I know of loves austere and lonely offices?” (13). In this writing, the speaker is now older and is looking back on what her father did for her as a child to show his love. She is sad now because, in her mind, she thought that her father did not care about her, but looking back she can clearly see that he loves her, which now makes her regret her relationship with him. In the poem by Lucille Clifton, the tone of the speaker can be perceived as the speaker being bitter and angry towards her father because he never bothered to take care of her and her mother both emotionally and financially. Clifton writes, “But you were the only son of a needy father, and the father of a needy son; you gave her all you had which was nothing” (12). The speaker’s father never gave his family anything, therefore, the speaker wants everything she never got in return. Both of these poems tie into theme in a certain way. “Those Winter Sundays” tone ties back to theme because they deal with regret and sadness because of the love the speaker never knew as a child.
The Other Sister is about a family with a sibling that has a developmental disability also known as mildly mentally retardation (MMR), mild developmental disability, or mild intellectual disorder (MID). Carla Tate is our main character that has MMR as a disability. She is a young women, twenty-four years old, with a slender but beautiful appearance. Carla has just graduated from a special education boarding school and is returning home to her family. Carla’s mother (Elizabeth Tate) is overbearingly protective, does not appreciate all of the abilities that Carla has acquired. Her father (Bradley Tate) is a recovering alcoholic who is sympathetic and supportive of Carla, who at the same time has to deal with his domineering wife. Carla has
The poem "Maude Clare" by Christina Georgina Rossetti tells the story of two women, Maude Clare and Nell, and their relationship with the male character, Thomas. They are both presented as being in love with him; Nell is newly married to Thomas whilst Maude Clare was at the wedding as a guest. The poem focuses on the women characters; the poem is about the conflict between the past and current lover of a man. Maude Clare, as hinted by the title, is the main character of this poem. It focuses on how she deals with the man she loves marrying someone else and how she presents herself.
The second stanza is almost like the first in the fact that it appeals to the same senses. It talks about the actions and the feelings of the child. It describes how the child would wake and wait for his father to call him. The second stanza also describes the mood of the house in the line, "fearing the chronic angers of that house." When she first begins the poem, the sense of sorrow is present. The author speaks of what her brother has done wrong, but she does so with an attitude that shows she does not care about those actions. She speaks like this until the near end, where she openly expresses her endearment for her brother and sheds a more positive outlook onto him. The last stanza demonstrates that, as a person who has made poor decisions, he was a caring brother until the end. It also shows how, regardless of what others think, she will always view him in her own way.
Both of these poems talks about selling and money and young men’s lives, but they are both unquestionably different.
Both the poems have the theme of love, written from a man’s point of view, and explores the way men treat woman in relationships. The former does this by a male narrator writing a poem to a female, using imagery to entice her. The latter by using a duke, explaining the story of what happened to his previous wife whilst looking at her picture. Both the poems use imagery and other poetic devices but in different ways. The Elder Sister is a painting by a well-known French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. This work of art was completed by William in 1869. As a result of research made on this painting, it was found that the painting was anonymously given to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston as a gift in 1992. According to the museum, this was a gift of an anonymous lady in memory of her father. Since then this amazing work of art has been a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine arts, Houston; becoming one of the most notable highlights in the museums painting collection. Its dimensions are 51¼ × 38¼ in (130.2 × 97.2 cm) and the frame is 67½ × 55 × 5½ in (171.5 × 139.7 × 14 cm).
There are similarities in these two poems such as the theme and the observentness of the narrator. Both of the poems themes involve death. In ?I heard a Fly buzz when I died?, the poet writes, ? And then the Windows failed ? and then I could not see to see- ", which means that the narrator?s eyes would not open no more; they had died. In ?Because I could not stop for Death? it shows the theme
Therefore we have two poems which are deliberately changing their structure from the norm in order to create effect. However, these effects have totally different intentions, which lead to the end of the similarities and the first of many differences between the two poems.
In both pieces she wishes to be detached from love and responsibility, yet as the poem progresses, she has a change of heart, almost an epiphany.
