These metaphors describe the way that federal, state, and local governments share responsibilities and divide roles. The terms layer cake was used to describe a closed system where all three of the levels of government, federal, state, and local, were all separate from each other (Cronkhite, 2013). Each level was viewed as being separate and disconnected from the other two levels where each system acted as closed system (Cronkhite, 2013). This system also was called dual federalism (AP, n.d.). Under the layer cake description of government each level is seen to have control over certain areas. The layer cake form is characterized by view that the Constitution gives the federal government power over national defense and foreign policy and
The Applewhites have changed throughout the book, but these three have had the greatest change. Jake Semple started off as a black-hearted thirteen year old who got expelled from every school he has been in. He even started a fire in one! The last school he could enroll in was the Applewhite’s Creative Academy, if he got kicked out of this school he would be sent to Juvenile Detention. When Jake was sent to live with the Applewhites he thought they were a very unusual family. But after a while he grew used to their strange ways and even started to like them. When Jake took part in the Applewhite’s play he didn’t want to be known as a wrongdoer, he wanted to be known as an actor. Throughout the book Jake changed from a cold-hearted lawbreaker

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein is a thrilling historical fiction novel with absolutely naturalistic characters. My personal favorite of these characters being Queenie (aka Julie, (Lady) Julia MacKenzie Wallace Beaufort-Stuart, or Scottie). Queenie is a spunky, brassy, quick-witted, Scotish young woman who is a spy under the British military. She is captured by the Gestapo when she made a cultural mistake on one of her missions in France (#1) and is thouroughly interrogated and brutally tortured. She eventually makes a deal with these secret police to write a confession telling them all she knew of airfeids, coordinates, coding, the resistance (exc.) for a few extra weeks alive in their prison and the shot at getting sent to a concentration
The school principal and assistant school principal from South Forrest Attendance Center met with Tristen and his teacher after comments made to her. Ms. Bailey stated during the meeting, Tristen told them he is not allowed to say the word "mom" at home or Gina will go to jail or the family will have to find a new place to stay; Tristen told the reporter Gina is not suppose to be in the home. According to the reporter, if Tristen or his brothers tell anyone Gina is in the home, their father will whip them with a belt or wooden back scratcher. The reporter stated she was told that law enforcement has been involved with the family and Mr. Landrum is hiding Gina. Per the reporter, on 04/16/16, Bradford watched dirty movies; the movies had women and men acting in a sexual manner.
Without the killers coming to hunt Anderson, Nick’s maturity and growth would not be evident. “The Killers” is a literal term for the people who are hunting Ole Anderson. Nick goes from being a regular young man who was merely just a customer at a restaurant, to risking his life to try and save someone else. “I was up at Henry’s,” Nick said, “and two fellows came in and tied up me and the cook, and they said they were going to kill you.” By making the initiative to go and tell Ole Anderson about the hitmen, Nick was demonstrating his selfless act by putting the safety of someone else above his own. This is a sign of
Of Mice and Men, a novella by John Steinbeck, depicts the theme of loneliness through every page in because it is shown in both central, and in particularly, secondary characters. Being one of the oldest and unpopular workers, Candy is always haunted by his solitude. Crooks, also a minor character, experiences with isolation on physical and mental levels. Loneliness is continuously shown in the role of Curley's wife. The two main characters of this book are, George and Lennie; direct opposites, but they still have a strong relationship between each other throughout the story, unlike the other characters on the farm. Together, they run away from their job in Weed to find another job on a farm in the Salinas Valley. Here they find almost
He hears the principal's voice. "Attention. Code red. We have an intruder in the school. Lockdown is in progress. This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill" he says in a panicky tone. The room goes chaotic. Everyone is rushing around, finding a place to hide. Liam sits there frozen. He thinks of one thing as all this is happening; finding Ocean and making sure she's okay. "Liam! Liam!" yells the teacher. Then he starts to move. He jolts out of his seat and rushes out the door, ignoring the screams from his teacher. The halls are empty, dark and quiet. Somewhere lurking in these halls, is the intruder. Is he armed? Will he make it out of this alive? He just did the stupidest thing ever. And all he can think about is making things right with her. After ten minutes of walking, he hears banging on the lockers. It's coming from behind, he thinks. He runs down the hall and turns the
In the town of South Lake Tahoe, where it’s just like any other town everyone knows everyone and it’s a safe place for children to grow up. Crime ratings were close to zero in this town and the people of South Lake Tahoe had normal everyday lives just like anybody else. The town’s “child-friendly” environment, the Dugard family called this place home (Hawkins) and a place they thought was safe. However, on June 10, 1991, a terrible nightmare exploded into reality for their family and especially for eleven year-old Jaycee Dugard. One day just like any other day where Jaycee got ready for school, she started walking towards the bus stop, where two people tased her and Jaycee touched the very last thing
There was a loud knock on the door. My parents opened it. “Is Veronica home?’’ I got up and walked towards the kitchen where they were. “Good morning, I’m just here to ask a few questions. I want you to tell the truth. I need you to help me find your friend.” All I said back was “ok”. The first question was when did you see him last. “We went out for dinner last night at East Side Mario’s, after that I went to her house for a few hours”. The police was writing on his notepad and never looked up. “Do you have any ideas of why she might have ran away? Was she mad at anyone or was anyone mad at
In the cemetery lies the bodies of many dead people, including Nick. Before he died, he had always been the silent type. Well at least after the ruthless and scary incident
The media presence of the simulacra seemed to start with Ellen’s initial broadcast of the event which immediately put Nick on blast (Flynn 161). The story then continues with the statement by Noelle Hawthorne that Amy was pregnant, followed by Nick taking “control of the story” through an interview with Rebecca at a bar (Flynn 193, 299-303). Through the major shifts in the case and media coverage, the story and simulacra, representation of Nick, change.
