Resources that relate to patient care have been cut, such as lacking an adequate supply of clean linens on weekends and nights for patient rooms. While resources relating to patient care have been cut, the CEO’s salary went up from $800,000 to $1,100,000 this past year. Nurses have mobilized and created a voice for themselves and are pushing to unionize with the California Nurses Association (CNA) to fight for more resources and better wages. Since the protesting and unionizing rallies, Huntington has hired expensive anti-union companies to surveillance, intimidate, question nurses and try to divide and oppress the unionizing efforts of the California Nurses Association (CNA).
The aim of this study is to provide a detailed account of the nursing care for a patient who is experiencing a breakdown in health. One aspect of their care will be discussed in relation to the nursing process. The model used to provide an individualised programme of care will be discussed and critically analysed.
1. The nurse is asked to implement a new, complex, and invasive procedure and is concerned that this may violate the state’s nurse practice act.
The Illinois State Board of Nursing is overseen by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). To have an agency that ensures the safe practice of nursing by monitoring license compliance and to take action against those that practice unsafely, protects the safety of the public. Therefore, any person who deems a nurse’s behavior or action in violation of a law or rule can file a complaint.
Scope of practice is defined as the actions, tasks, procedures, etc that are permitted by law for a specific profession. The scope of practice in nursing "outlines restrictions to what the law permits, based on education, training and experience qualifications" (Anderson, 2013). The Boards of Nursing in the United States, for example the California Board of Registered Nursing, where I practice, has defined the scope of nursing practice in the California Nursing Practice Act.
The California law has a relatively brief history, starting with the passing of AB 394 in 1999, when the state established the idea of nurse-to-patient ratios before working out the details of implementation or the actual ratio parameters.
According to the Texas Board of Nursing (2008), nurses who receive advanced nursing preparation, may practice in roles and fields, such as academics, technology, community health, education, and management that are crucial to advance the health of the community, however the fields does not focus on direct care of individuals and their nursing practice does not require regulatory recognition outside the Registered Nurse license. The CNE filed is one of the advanced nursing practices that fall into that category. NEs must work with all institutional stakeholders to create effective and long-term healthcare change, therefore, lifelong learning and education is needed to remain competent to produce positive patient outcomes. The National Healthcare Employee Union (NHEU) asserts that the hospital 's retention and recruiting efforts concerning nurse staffing is deficient. This deficiency has led to diminished patient care and more nurses quitting because of the fatigue of being overworked due to staffing shortages.
The North Carolina Board of Nursing has specific criteria for any nurse that is identified as being under the influence. They offer a voluntary program for nurses who have impaired judgement and competency as a result of chemical influence. The Alternative Program, or AP, focuses on ensuring public health and safety by monitoring impaired nurses, return the nurse to a safe state of practicing, achieve early intervention of chemical dependency, and give nurses the opportunity to seek recovery in a non-published, non-punitive and therapeutic environment (Alternative). To enter into the program, the nurse must apply directly to the NCBON and agree not to work until cleared by the board. Eligibility for re-entering into the work force is a minimum of three months after initial treatment
CHIEF COMPLAINT: This is a post op note from a procedure performed July 21, 2015 by David Lin, MD.
The Indiana State Board of Nursing is a body of nine selected members, comprised of a mixture of RNs and LPNs. This board listens to cases regarding university nursing programs, certified RNs fighting for their license, and individuals who are trying to obtain a nursing license. It is up to their discretion whether certain actions of a nurse are permissible or not. They also make adjustments to the curriculums or higher education schools to ensure that they are producing good quality nurses.
A discussion regarding the health care reform or even health care in general can be somewhat controversial. The definition of health is drastically different depending on whom you speak to. Many would define health as " a person's absence of disease, others would describe good health based on the status of mind, body & social well-being" (GCU Lecture, module 2, 2012). According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, health is defined as "The overall condition of an organism at a given time". An individual's overall health affects the nation, this is where stakeholders come into value. According to Keele, Buckner & Bushnell a stakeholder is either an individual or an organization that either invest time and
The debate to find the perfect balance of nurse to patient ratio continues between healthcare workers and legislators. According to an article in Modern Healthcare magazine, “Got enough nurses?” Nurse groups cite a Kentucky case to support push for staffing ratio laws,” nurses attending to a dozen or more patients at a time is “physically impossible” (Rice, 2015). Rice reports statements made by Gerard Brogan, lead nursing practice representative for the California Nurses Association, Pamela Cipriano, president of the American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association, Jan Emerson-Shea, vice president of external affairs for the California Hospital Association, Peter Buerhaus, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Workforce Studies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Doctor Christine Cassel, CEO of the National Quality Forum, Bonnie Castillo, director of the Registered Nurse Response Network for National Nurses United union, Linda Aiken, director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania, discussing research and other insights into the hardships of large nurse to patient ratios. As nurses continue to research and present data to contest the high patient to nurse ratios, hospitals push back with confronting data and research; both unable to reach an agreement.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is a full-service professional organization that symbolizes the interests of registered nurses through its constituent and state nurses associations. The ANA implements the nursing profession by raising high standards of nursing practice, honoring the rights of nurses in the work field, promoting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by pushing the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public. Their mission statement is, “Nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all.” Some of ANA’s main focuses are reformation of the health care system so that it delivers primary health care in the communities, growing roles for
The American Association of nurses, arises in the year 1896 at the hands of a group of former students of nursing, and is in 1911, its name changed to the of "Association American of Nurses". (Cruz, 2009)
The mission is successful negotiation of fair wages, safe working conditions and exemplary patient care. Can the nation’s labor unions help nursing healthcare professionals meet these mission goals? Battles are currently being fought to preserve and reform the Nation’s healthcare system. Along with proposed changes to the affordability and accessibility of medical care, healthcare providers will be faced with challenges of patient-to-provider ratios, rising costs, falling salaries/benefits and change in patient care roles. Will quality care be provided and will the
