Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a term that describes health and wellness therapies that have not been part of conventional medicine. Complementary treatments is with conventional medicine, and alternative treatments is used in place of conventional medicine. It can include treatments and therapies such as massage, natural products, meditation, yoga, vitamin supplements, herbs, chiropractic, acupuncture, and lots more. But problems arise when CAM is questioned if it scientifically helps patients overcome a disease. Is there really health benefits? Are some of the products natural? Do they come with risks? And introducing it to children may interfere in their growth if they do not need it. Supplements are not risk-free, if one unknowingly takes more vitamins than they already get from their diet and thinking more would be better. That can cause their bodies harm by overdosing on vitamins and minerals. The internet is filled with dietary supplements that claim to cure some sort of illness, which is bad for public health because there is no proved evidence. At my other shadowing that I have done with athletic trainers, the issues of CAM did not seem to appear. Athletic trainers only practice and apply treatments to patients that are scientifically proven to benefit athletes and patients. We may get an athlete that may need help in their diet, so athletic trainers will refer them to a professional. Athletic trainers can also have an athlete asking if their supplement that they bought is actually good for them. They can educate them on what their body needs, but the athletic trainer will not say do this or that because CAM may not have sufficient
