Final Essay
Fifteen
Have you ever attended or witnessed any birthday party for children, teenager, adult or even your own birthday party? We all celebrate our birthday every year, but young girls will have a special birthday that has to be celebrated for once in their life. A woman has a point of time where they stop from being a child and become as an adult. Womanhood is such an important stage for young girls where some cultures have different forms of celebration to recognize the upcoming of age. In the cultural root of Latin America, girls who are turning to fifteen years of age will be honored a memorable birthday ceremony welcoming their adulthood. This ceremony is

During the Quinceañera mass, the girl will receive the communion, sacramental bread, bouquet of flowers, jewelry such as ring, necklace and tiara that are blessed by the priest (Madrina). All these items have meanings in the girl’s life and future. For example, the ring symbolized as an unconditional love from God. The Bible and rosary are both foundations of her faith. Nowadays, the religious ceremony is seen as an optional part of the celebration. Girls having the celebration use their religious beliefs to determine whether or not to have a religious ceremony. The religious ceremony signifies a cultural ritual within the community that strengthen the girl’s commitment to her faith. One of the factors that a girl fails to conduct a religious mass is because it is necessary that the girl has to be baptized, received her first communion and attended confirmation classes. After the church service, the celebration of Quinceañera will be continued with a reception. The music of the event is important. Music band or DJs has to be present to bring out entertainment and joy throughout the event. Like in wedding reception, the first dance of the party always goes to the birthday girl’s father. This daughter-father dance is a tradition for Quinceañera, and it is called the quince waltz (Madrina). This is a special moment for the young girl and her father. This dance symbolizes the young woman 's growing independence and the father has accepted that
The mass ceremony is the most important part of a quinceanera because the Bible and the rosary, the tiara and or crown, the bouquet of flowers, and the people who accompany a quinceanera hold a spiritual meaning during the ceremony. The crown and or tiara represents the young woman as a princess in God’s eyes. The Bible and Holy rosary are both foundations of faith and gets blessed with Holy Water.
Somehow, I managed to keep a smile on my face as if I had no fears. The ceremony included Bible verses and singing. I received six gifts from my aunts and uncles: a Bible, a bouquet of flowers, a ring, a bracelet, a rosary and a tiara. Each of them was blessed by the father. Each gift I received held a meaning: closeness with family and with God, and the passage to womanhood.
Birthday Party by Katharine Brush is a unique short story that captivates the reader in little words. Brush’s purpose with this story is to bring emotion to the reader, not their own, but a specific emotion, and vivid imagery that seems literal and realistic to the reader. She wanted to put the reader right in the middle of a realistic scene and she does that with few, but clever, literary devices: bland adjectives, the point of view, imagery, and the absence of metaphors and similes. Blunt description and the “dropping off” of the reader into the story without any detailed exposition drives the author successfully towards her purpose for the reader.
Quinceanera is one of the most meaningful and beautiful occasions in Mexican culture. It embarks the celebration of girl’s fifteen birthday that is anticipated with much happiness and enjoyment. It is a celebration of womanhood means she is fully ready to take on her responsibilities and is of marriageable age. The ceremony is celebrated with zest and zeal by the parents.
In Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, girls do still have a Quinceanera, but it has to be altered in the way that it is done. There are many people that do not speak Spanish in the U.S., so there’s has to be a way to coordinate these people into the celebration, since mostly even have the English Language in common. Invitations for Quinceanera are made both in Spanish and In English. The invitations that are in English might read “Sweet 15” instead of a Quinceanera. Traditions that are done during the ceremony might not be done, they might be done before the ceremony. A young girl may chose to have a “Sweet 16” instead of the traditional Quinceanera. A “Sweet 16” is the coming of age party in the United
Within the human lifespan, there are milestones setups that are in increments based on how many times we have revolved around the Sun. The ride around the Sun starts the day we are born, and each time we have made a full revolution we celebrate a birthday. Interestingly enough, cultures around the world have decided that after so many birthdays, a child has reached "the coming of age" and is celebrated through some type of ritual. I quote "the coming of age" because it is practiced differently from culture to culture. However, the underlying similarity is that it marks the time in which a child has reached a milestone in life that a society now views them as an adult. For this paper, I will investigate three coming of age rituals for females: the Bat Mitzvah, the Quinceanera, and the Sunrise Ceremony.
At a traditional quince, the girl of honor will usually wear a ball gown, along with her Court of Honor dressed in dresses and tuxedos. Also, during the reception she may receive a tiara (denotes a princess before God and the world; a triumph over childhood and ability to face the challenges ahead), scepter (symbolizes authority, and more importantly, responsibility for her life and taking adult roles in society, that is now being given to the young woman), cross or medal (signifies faith - in God, in herself, and in her world), bible, or prayer book and rosary (Important resources to keep the word of God in her life). These gifts would be given out by the Padrinos (also known as the godparents and/or sponsors). The crowning of the tiara is traditionally done by the parents, along with the presenting of the scepter. The parents will optionally present three roses to represent the stages of life, infancy, childhood, and current age. The gifts are the distinctive,
The ethical-economic argument is built upon the concept of social hierarchy influencing involuntary ICT non-use (Anderson 184). Involuntary ICT non-use occurs when employees wish to use new technology, but are unable to (Anderson 184). Technology acceptance theories cannot predict the lack of ICT use when employees have previously accepted
We ask for Your Presence and Blessings for this ceremony celebrating her transition from child to young adulthood”(www.religioustolerance.org/wicpuber.htm). Then, the child lights the candle that symbolizes childhood. Next, the mother asks of the child some thing along the lines of If he or she answers affirmatively to all that is asked of him/her then he/she lights the candle that symbolizes adulthood. The person then is given water which has rose petals
Almost every little girl dreams of her wedding day. There is so much planning and preparation that goes into a wedding. There is the dress, venue, food, guest list, and so much more that is involved in a wedding. Mark Auslander’s essay explores the rituals of an average American wedding, and how some of these rituals have European ties.
In Katherine Brush’s “Birthday Party”, irony, imagery, and symbolism are very prominent. These literary devices achieve the goal of the text which is showing contrast between appearances and reality.
After getting their feet bound they will have a stronger family connection and unity because they have followed their beauty traditions. Making their family pride is one of the most important moments of every young girl who will no longer be a “little girl”. It will be the day that their daughter is finally able to socialize with their community members. It is also, the day that the mother will be able to present her daughter to her friends and celebrate this occasion with them. These family traditions are seen as reminders of events that have shaped family members before. Every family will want their daughter to follow them and to bring honor to the family. Eventually upholding this tradition is very important, although it can be emotionally harmful and physically unpleasant.

A few of these customs involve a Lazo, Arras, and dancing. The Lazo is a large rosary, a ribbon or decorated cord, that is draped in a horizontal figure eight around the necks or shoulders of the bride and groom while they are kneeling at the altar to symbolize their union and their commitment to always be together, side by side. At the end of the ceremony, the Lazo is removed and is given to the bride as a souvenir. The groom gives the bride thirteen gold coins, called Arras, that are blessed by the priests. These coins represents Christ and his 12 apostles and are given to the bride to symbolize the undoubted trust and confidence that the groom has in her.
With background research done on Heidi Roizen, it can be seen that she lived an interesting professional life. She maintained many high-level positions and sought out how to make each one of them a new interesting chapter in her life. As a professor at the prestigious school of Stanford University, we can she that now Roizen has become interested in expanding the minds of students and the young professionals in order to hopefully allow them to expand their horizons and make something more of themselves.
