Isolation, meaning a state of separation, is often misperceived by many as people frequently believe that isolation is always a negative state of being; that isolation due to emotions is non-realistic, and that isolation is always involuntary. These myths are commonly accepted; however, the novel Crow Lake takes a different stand from these myths. Mary Lawson, author of the novel, demonstrated isolations in many of its forms through the protagonist, Kate, and a small, desolated rural community that represented the primary setting of the novel, Crow Lake. By doing so, Lawson reveals the counterfactual nature of these myths and thus correcting the misconceptions that the society has about isolation.
The author portrays Stanley to be a very courageous person throughout his journey. A courageous person is someone who is not deterred by danger or pain and takes risks to help others. Stanley displays his bravery when he runs away from camp without any food or water in search of his friend, Zero. The author says- “He ran.”, on page 148; this evidence displays Stanley to be a courageous person, as he runs away from the

1. Q. As a camp director, do you think more children are happy to be at camp despite the fact that they have cancer?
The most noticeable changes to Stanley were the physical changes. Before Stanley arrived at Camp Green Lake, Stanley was overweight and was bullied constantly for it. His teacher, Mrs Bell, was once talking about ratios and had compared his weight to another boy’s weight who was much smaller. She had written on the board the ratio 3:1, stating that Stanley had weighed three times more than the other boy (Louis Sachar pg 7). The teacher hadn’t realised how much she had hurt both of the boys feelings. At Camp Green Lake Stanley had to dig holes every day and this made him physically strong as he lost a couple of pounds in sweat the first day.
