What Was The Role Of Confederation In Canada

The Government of Canada does a lot of things. Everything from providing us with transportation to making sure everyone has a say in parliament. This group is made up of citizens that we elect to run this country and provide the citizen with a pretty good quality of life. This is the opinion is held by most Canadians. Unfortunately, some still think that we do not live as good a life here as we could somewhere else. Yes, the Government provides and maintains a high quality of life for its citizens. Social Programs provide assistance financially and physically to people that are in need of it. As Canadians, we have an abundance of freedoms and rights to protect us and our government is run as a democracy, where everyone gets a say.

New France, is a term that was used to refer to the area that the French colonized in the North America. Jacques Cartier, Samuel Champlain and other early explorers opened up new routes along St. Lawrence River to allow further exploration works into the North America territories. Champlain explored other places down to the Lake Champlain building up settling areas.

If the Maritime colonies had been able to isolate themselves, they could have lived contentedly for a long period of time, but other pressures would force Maritimers to reconsider Confederation. One of these outside pressures was the support Great Britain was giving to this idea of Confederation in British North America. Great Britain no longer wanted to be concerned with nor did they wish to provide the financial assistance to support Canada in any war.

As most Canadians may know, the land we know now as Canada was once the property of Britain and France- the countries that originally colonized Canada. After Canada was officially formed in 1867 and even prior to that event, there was much division among the Anglophone and Francophone populations, though a strong desire for freedom from the British Empire ran on both sides.

A decision had to be made. Newfoundland was in a position to make a choice for their future as a self-governing dominion, a british-governing dominion, or a maritime province as a part of Canada. Newfoundland chose to join the confederation of Canada, and it was quite necessary to do so. Newfoundland was already a dominion that stood outside of Canada, however could not exist on its own because of its lack of sustainability and ability to grow. Therefore, it was very necessary for Newfoundland to join the confederation of Canada.

This document was written in the 18th century specifically during the Federalist Era. It was written 18 years after America won independence from England on July 4, 1776. This lead to the creation of the “Articles of Confederation” which were made primarily for the people because they feared central government having all power. Then at The Annapolis Convention (1786) is where the groundworks of “The U.S. Constitution” were discussed to replace the “Articles of Confederation”.

This act occurred on July 1st, 1867 the law The British North America Act is important in Canadian history because it is the 1867 Act which officially created the new country of Canada by joining together the four provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia legal in Confederation. This legislation, passed by the British Parliament, created Canada as a new making it its own today. Therefore Canada is an independent country that must not listen to anyone but themselves.

Speaking against the ratification of the Constitution, Patrick Henry says, "If a wrong step be now made, the republics may be lost forever. If this new government will not come up to the expectation of the people...their liberty will be lost and tyranny must and will rise..." The leaders of the country created the U.S. Constitution due to an immense dissatisfaction with the system of government stated in the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation support a government in which there is only one branch, but it's power would be limited in order to protect the people's liberty and rights. Although the Articles of Confederation establish a better system of government than when the states were under British rule, some weaknesses were found and amended in a new document called the United States

British Columbia is a rich and fertile land located next to the Northwest Territories. We believe that joining confederation will bring a great benefit to not only our province but to all of the others. Our deciding factors of joining the confederation are the Transcontinental Railroad, defence and allies from the provinces, and more settlement which will eventually arrive (due to the railroad) in our province. Canadian confederation was a process in which the British colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into one government of Canada, on July 1 1867. However Canadian confederation did not just happen like that there were causes that lead to confederation.
