Capstone Research Paper: Therapeutic Services For many Americans, there comes a time when people are in need of therapeutic services and need help finding the right treatment for them and or loved one. Often times therapy is very beneficial to people, but is not always offered with their insurance. Therapeutic services should be provided to all patients as a non-evasive treatment option because these services provide nontraditional alternatives that enhance patient care and therefore, insurance companies should cover these services. Music Therapy is used for many reasons and can be helpful in many ways. Music has been proven to be a therapeutic service to people because it’s helped people to contain themselves and even express themselves through the music that they listen to. This treatment is beneficial to many humans because it’s a good way to help one’s emotions without any medication (American Music Therapy Association). For example, music is used to treat pain and reduce stress. In Amy Novotney’s article about music therapy, she says, “The beep of ventilators and infusion pumps, the hiss of oxygen, the whir of carts and the murmur of voices as physicians and nurses make rounds — these are the typical noises a premature infant hears spending the first days of life in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While the sounds of such life-saving equipment are tough to mute, a new study suggests that some sounds, such as lullabies, may soothe pre-term babies and their parents, and even improve the infants' sleeping and eating patterns, while decreasing parents' stress (Pediatrics, 2013)” (Novotney). Another example of how music is a reliable therapeutic resource is for people with autism. Yet many people still aren't aware that the law exists or how it affects them. In fact, a 2014 APA survey found that more than 90 percent of Americans were unfamiliar with the mental health parity law (American Psychological Association). Many people might end up not receiving the appropriate therapeutic services that they need because their medical insurance does not cover it. However, medical insurance does cover some of it. For example, for physical therapy, some insurers require a referral from a doctor. People consider physical therapy to be a necessity as long as it's prescribed by a physician and significantly improves physical functions that were limited because of a disease, illness or surgical procedure. On the other hand, others do not consider physical therapy to be necessary for someone whose condition is getting worse or if the patient is not showing improvement. (Holmes). Many people question and ask themselves why doesn’t my insurance cover these needed services, and what can I do in order for my insurance to fully cover it?
