One of the most painful scenes in Romeo and Juliet is where Capulet berates on Juliet. This scene has more meaning than what some may be deterred from seeing by being so befuddled as a result of Capulet’s shear rage towards his only daughter. To provoke such an eruption, Juliet had chosen not to marry Paris who is selected by Capulet himself. Due to the time period this is shown as great disrespect because she disobeyed her parents. She is forced to rebel against her parents because of choices she makes throughout the entirety of the play. This rebellion against her parents that has sparked within Juliet is caused by her marriage to Romeo and her decision to not marry Paris. / Graze where you will, you shall not house with me.” (3.5.199-200) Essentially, Capulet is stating that if Juliet does not marry Paris then no longer will Juliet be a Capulet, but nothing more than a wanderer to him. Her only rebuttal against the word of her father is the fact of her age and how young she is marrying. In the sense of statistics, Juliet is not wrong, the average age of marriage whilst she thrived was well over 20. From 1566 to 1837 the average age of marriage was about 27 years of age (The age of marriage 1), when in the play, Juliet is no older than thirteen. Juliet is also given an ultimatum from her father, “An you be mine, I’ll give you to my friend; / An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets”. (3.5.193-194) This ultimatum that Capulet gives to Juliet is another cause for her reactance towards her parents as this shows how little they love her, that they would disown her on something with such little importance. This one sided fight between Capulet and his daughter will causes Juliet to ultimately rebel against her father by dying with Romeo. Her reactance in opposition to her parents drastically reveals itself in the story when Juliet runs to the help of Friar Lawrence knowing this would anger her parents, while earlier in the play she was afraid to come down her own balcony to talk to her lover
For example, on the Balcony scene, when Romeo encountered Juliet, Juliet exclaimed, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? / Deny thy father and refuse thy name, / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.36-39). This quote toward the middle of the story demonstrates that Juliet truly loves Romeo, meaning that she regrets that Romeo is a Montague, and that she is a Capulet. The division between their families produces a lot of issues for them because the Capulet and the Montagues have massacred themselves continuously. Shakespeare uses connotation and symbolism by deeply showing that Juliet is essentially asking Romeo, why he is a Montague? Juliet asks Romeo to object his last name, so they could have a peaceful relationship, not separated by violence. In addition to this, when Juliet went to consult Friar Lawrence concerning the marriage with Count Paris, she said, “O, bid me leap, rather than marry Paris, / From off the battlements of any tower, / Or walk in thievish ways, or bid me lurk / Where serpents are. Chain me with roaring bears, / Or hide me nightly in a charnel house” (4.1.78-81). This quote towards the end of the story demonstrates that Juliet prefers to die than to marry Count Paris. She is essentially saying that she’ll
She is now more interested in love than to be herself. We all get to that stage at one point and this is reflecting how teenagers are in real life. Her view on marriage changes as she confesses her love to Romeo "Take all myself,"(Act 2 Scene 2). When Romeo overheard her on the balcony confessing her loves she broke a major rule and this is where all the trouble starts. They both went to Friar Laurence to get married and little after is revealed that Lord Capulet, her dad, has arranged her a marriage with Paris in a couple days. The marriage is a little after she meets Romeo so she wants to be clean and no sinful so she want to be rebellious to show that she does not like Paris. “But, an you will not wed, I'll pardon you! Graze where you will you shall not house with me… An you be mine, I'll give you to my friend; And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, For, by my soul, I'll ne'er acknowledge thee, Nor what is mine shall never do thee good: Trust to't, bethink you; I'll not be forsworn.”(Act 3 Scene 5) This is Juliet’s father threatening to disown her and Juliet responds with “And I'll no longer be a Capulet.” Juliet is willing to give up her name, her life to be in love with
As the daughter of Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet, Juliet is forced to obey her parents and marry a gentleman named Paris. Unfortunately, Juliet refuses to do so and chooses to be with the love of her life, Romeo Montague. As written, Lady Capulet suggested that Juliet marries Paris because of his good looks and money. Though marriage never crossed Juliet’s mind she still took it into consideration up until she laid eyes on Romeo Montague, the son of her family’s worse enemies, and fell madly in love with him. Juliet was so in love she prepared to disobey her parents and marry Romeo in secret, choosing him over her family. After their marriage, Lord Capulet demanded his right as Juliet’s father to marry Paris, just as Juliet refused to marry
There are many people in “Romeo and Juliet” who attributed to their deaths. The first suspect is
Should someone sacrifice their all for love? Not everyone believes that love is wonderful, but is love worth everything? Romeo and Juliet are known as “a pair of star-crossed lovers” (Shakespeare, 2). Romeo and Juliet are young lovers. They met each other at a party and fell in love instantly. Romeo is 17, while Juliet is 13. Romeo and Juliet come from different families. Both of their family hates each other and are enemies. They got married in secret, only knowing each other for a couple of days. After a period of four days 6 people, including them, died. The Montagues and capulets are two noble families. There are many similarities about them, but also differences.
One would believe that teenage rebellion is a common theme through literary, cinematic, and musical elements of our society due to the relatability of the situations that their acts of defiance have created. The acts of rebellion by the two protagonists in Romeo and Juliet can be compared to many other works in popular literature and media. Two samples that illustrate these ideas of disobedience are the popular movie The Titanic and the young adult novel The Selection.
Why is teenage rebellion a prevalent theme throughout literature, movies, and song lyrics? Teenage rebellion is unremarkable since it is an empathetic subject to many audiences. One might think that the subject appeals to adults as well. Since teenage rebellion is a topic that adults can also relate to and it becomes a theme that is understandable to all ages. Teenage rebellion occurs toward “society and against adult authority,” (Rebel). Adolescents want the sense of freedom that following rules does not provide. Literature that incorporates teenage rebellion is Romeo and Juliet, a well-known play by William Shakespeare. It illustrates two kinds of teenage rebellion, the dissident of opposing society and/ or adult authority. Juxtaposed with
The life of a teenage is drastically delicate, yet dramatic, as they try to accommodate to peer pressures that coreces them to take on foreign responsibilities. Even so, why are teenagers deemed as rebellious and delirious in aspects such as literature, movies, and music? Presented in Romeo and Juliet, a notorious Shakespearean play, The School for Good and Evil Quadrilogy written by Soman Chainani, and the attention-grabbing The Hunger Games, teenager rebellion can contribute significant details as to why teenagers engage in detrimental affairs. One may conjecture opinions as to why certain literature, movies, or music display themes of rebellion and why they are enticing to audiences to aid in the understanding of the life of a teenager.
He changes his thoughts about the relationship between Paris and Juliet. When he first speaks to Paris, regarding Juliet’s marriage, he says it is her choice, but later on in the story, he demands that Juliet marry Paris (I.ii)(III.v). This change could cause Juliet to be upset with her father for forcing her to marry someone she does not want to. In addition to changing his mind, Lord Capulet gets angry with Juliet. He particularly says he will disown her, saying “Get thee to church o’ Thursday, Or never after look me in the face” (III.v). This statement illustrates how Juliet could feel unloved and extremely hurt. Lord Capulet has a strong influence in the death of Romeo and
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are several occurrences that cause Juliet to rebel. During the time of Shakespeare, Renaissance marriage customs were reflected upon male dominance and how women had little choice of whom they wanted to marry. They were primarily decided by their families to satisfy their own wealth and social status. Around the age of 14, there were many women who did not like whom their fathers had chosen for them. Juliet goes against the basic rules that are set by their families, and their own judgment. Juliet directly disobeys her father and shows her bravery.
Consider this, you've fallen in love with a stranger and all you want is to be near them and with them always you want to be theirs but later you find out your parents don't approve of this person and destroy every chance that you and this mysterious love interest could be together and make you be with someone you can't stand. This is the situation the protagonist Juliet is with her parents in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet Throughout Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet think they know what's best for Juliet, they show this in many ways like putting her on the spot for big long term life decisions and forcing her to marry Paris at a very young age. Lord and Lady Capulet expect a lot for a 14 year old girl and force her to make big life decisions that impact her future when she's barely been able to be a kid.
However, having said that, Lord Capulet has a change of heart in Act three. Also, in Act I, Lord Capulet says, “ My child is yet a stranger in the world, / She hath not seen the change of fourteen years.” In plain English, Lord Capulet says that Juliet is too young to be married. This goes against cultural expectations because during the Elizabethan era, most of the time a marriage was arranged for girls before they could walk.

Teenage rebellion is a common theme throughout plays and movies. Teens want to do something that shouldn’t do. However, teens shouldn’t be in a hurry because you may lose someone have to fight. Even when juliet know that romeo killed her cousin she still wanted to run away with romeo because she loves him so much. And even when Cinderella prince knows that Cinderella was servant in her stepmother house he still wanted to marry her because he love her so much.
Rebellion almost always has a huge effect on something whether it is good or bad. For an example it could lead to good if a country is being run by a bad leader and they rebelled against the person incharge. In that case it could be for the better of the country. Or it could go horribly wrong like in romeo and juliet. Juliet goes against her father and gets secretly married. Which lead to many deaths. My art piece shows the rebellion in romeo and juliet which is basically the love between them. Their love was rebellion because they are from two different families who hate each other. The first steps i took in this project was identifying the relation between romeo and juliet and rebellion. After i found the connection i found images to represent
